The sentry's back was turned and I seized my chance.
I was a bird soaring in the sky, a deer loping through the trees as graceful as moonbeams, a fox —slinking and silent as I slid through the undergrowth. The taste of freedom was in the air, my mouth, my lungs for a whole one- two- three- seconds before my chest was filled with burning, scorching pain and all I could see was whitewhitewhite and then I was nothing but a human heap on the ground
I failed. Again.
The sentry caught up to me moments later. "None of that shapeshifting trickery." He muttered. "You know that's only going to get you into more trouble."
I spat savagely at his feet.
He shook his head. "They told me you would be difficult, but they didn't say anything about stupid."
With that, he turned around and continued to haul me along.
Mulish over his comment, I followed him silently—for now. It didn't last long. "I'm not stupid! And what else did they tell you about me?"
He turned his head and raised an eyebrow at me as if to say: do you really think I need to answer your questions? But still, he did. "They didn't say much. Just that you were a slippery thing and that they had taken extra precautions."
He glanced at my chest for a second and I winced, remembering the burning pain.
"So," He prompted. "What other nifty tricks can you do?"
I tried to ignore that I was having a casual conversation with my jailer. "Just a bit of shapeshifting. Not much in the grand scheme of things but enough to land me here."
He raised an eyebrow again. "Just a bit? Darlin' I just saw you turn into a bird. That's hard stuff."
I shrugged. "So where are they taking me this time?"
He smiled smugly and my defences shot right up. "It's your lucky day. Turns out I'm not going in the direction of the nearest detention centre. We may be heading towards a rebel outpost where you can put those shapeshifting powers to use."
I gaped.
"Also," He added. "Until we figure out how to remove the binding curse, you'll be stuck with me."I groaned internally. Great.
