Chapter 1
The siren blares from the police car wailed into the midnight hours, the lonely streets now covered with three police cars racing to the Manhattan Museum of History as they received a 911 distress call from a museum owner. In one of the police cars, tail number 95, Detective Nikki was inside with her partner, Detective Aspen Lynn James Potter, as her partner drove with quickness and precision. "God, you couldn't even be slower than that couldn't you?" She laughed in delight as she gripped the bars for dear life. "Such a baby, cmon, you love it." The ever teasing woman beside her grinned with pleasure. As they neared the museum, Nikki's skilled hands were quick to lower down the sirens to initiate their presence. Once parked to a stop, the two partners were quick to leave their cars and pulled their radio walkie talkie with them as they walked with authority to the person waiting on them.
"Thank God, you've arrived!" A speech of pleasure was made by the beautiful auburn early 30 year old as she was quick to guide them into the museum, her steps clicked with hurried and quick steps with every move she made. "Ma'am, what's your name?" Aspen asked as her hands busy itself with looking for her little notepad and pen. "Melinda Gomez. Call me Linda sweet pea." Her polite tone replies as they were following the women around. A small buzz from the radio was quickly noticed by Nikki and she picked. "Over, Detective Nikki here." "Over, Detective Jasper here. Mind someone telling me the perimeter of the place?" The two detectives look at one another with raised eyebrows. "Perimeter? Why?" She spoke over the radio. "We found something behind some stairs." A small sigh never went unnoticed by Aspen. "I'll get her to tell me the perimeter, go to the work station with Cole. Analyze anything Niks." Nikki nodded before taking a detour back to the heart of the entrance where the desk was now occupied with Detective Cole Saltzman and two crime scene investigators taking pictures and coning numbers. "Nik! Come." Cole's enthusiastic voice hailed her over to the desk.
She jogs slightly to get to him quickly and Cole is quick to grab her forearms as he drags her to the computers. "Do you see how old this is? This is like.. My grandma's age!" Cole was hesitating to talk as his fascination was clearly onto the old computers. "Cole. You're in the wrong department here buddy." She couldn't hide the amusement in her tone as she attempted to make a straight face when talking to him but the smile cracked easily on her face. "Oh c'mon Nik. You know this is old old." The two bursted out laughing, a silly banter from one another that didn't quite reach an understanding from the investigators side as they were too busy in their own working field. "They're very weird aren't they?" A hushed tone from one of the investigators said as he looked up to the other. "Derek, you already know how they are." He shakes his head, despite his friend finding it weird to hear their humor, he himself found amusement in their banter. "Pete." He whined. "What?" Pete looked back with annoyance.
"It's weird." Derek egged on. "So? It's their humor. Get back on the job." Pete didn't entertain Derek's complaints and the two then worked peacefully as Nikki and Cole were bantering around while investigating. "You thinking what I'm thinking?" Nikki grins as she looks at her other coworker. "Oh I know." He drew out his reply and her hands were quick to look for the CCTV cameras as they were busy looking for their other partner who was located outside. "Wanna play 'Find Jasper'?" A nod was all Nikki had when they both were competing with one another on who could find Jasper first. "Found him. Pay up sore loser!" Cole's triumph over Nikki's got her a small scowl and her five crumpled dollars was forcefully given to Cole.
"Hey C, Nik! Got something?" Aspen asked as she and the owner, Linda, walked side by side to the desk where Cole and Nikki looked to one another. "Nope, not yet. But we found Jasper." Cole replied as he showed his five dollar cash to Aspen. She lets out a laugh of disbelief. "Really? Playing 'Find Jasper' again? And what the hell is he doing?" This caught the attention of the two and Linda as they watched through the footage of Jasper, their other colleague who was dancing like nobody's business in the lonely alleys. Snorted chuckles came from everyone's mouths as Nikki was quick to take out her phone as she recorded her friend.
"I'm working with a bunch of five year olds huh?" Aspen's chuckling died down as she retorted in amusement. "You are basically. But hey, boss is gonna love this!" Nikki grins as she waves her phone in Aspen's face. She lets out a silent and amused sigh before grabbing both their attention back to her. "Alright buddies, I think we found something in the Victorian Era section of the museum." Nikki was quick to be attentive as her bright features now left her as she focused on Aspen's next words. "There's shattered glass everywhere and some footprints left behind. Try to help me out the size of the foot and direction the theft must've gone. Use every resource you have okay? Nothing left behind alright? Sweep up everything you have currently and we'll gather at the station for the night. We'll figure it out in the morning okay?" The eager nods from the other two made Aspen pleased. "I'll escort Miss Linda and get Jasper's take on what he found." Just as that, Aspen quickly left them to their work and both Cole and Nikki were swift and quick in their work.
Cole was analyzing the footage and Nikki was by his side taking notes as they quietly did their work, focusing on the key details of the night and not forgetting to bring the black box with them in case it cannot be analyzed that night. "We really never catch a break huh?" Nikki questioned, which made Cole respond with a head shake. "We've already caught the crime syndicate the night before so it's not like this is a new thing." Cole mentions and Nikki nodded, making it true. Their minds were already reeling from the last few nights as they worked together taking down the drug syndicate groupies that took over Manhattan and despite the fact it was patrol night, nothing ever seems to be patrol night for the lovely six.
"Done notetaking?" Cole questioned and Nikki nodded. She leaves his side to go to the Victorian Era section where Aspen mentioned and she found her two other colleagues, Derek and Pete taking pictures and coning once again, just like at the desk. "Pete, D-Bear. What's the situation so far?" She calls out as she approaches the two who seem to finish off the last details of the crime scene. "I think we found something but I'm not sure how to explicitly detail it." Pete starts off as he comes to Nikki's side with his eyes trained on the crime scene. Despite wearing protective gear, she could tell from his eyes that he was trying to make sense of what he was seeing. "It ain't that hard to understand. Look, do you see this?" Derek says as he navigates his way to the display case. The two nodded. "The item was last placed here. The footprint? Someone wasn't smart enough to do the crime well. It's more of a rushed work. One and done thing. What do you think about it, Nik?"
She nods, taking in Derek's consideration. "Yeah it's true. Since the crime was committed, the way it was executed wasn't as flawless. Complicated one to say as the type of robbery they were committing is quite high class." Derek points in triumph. "You see? She gets me!" He exclaimed before maneuvering his way back to the two. "We've got the pictures, let's close it off for the night. I need sleep." Nikki looks to Derek in confusion. "I thought you and sleep were married at this point, why do you need sleep again?" She questions as the two crime investigators were packing up their equipment. "I didn't get much sleep last night analyzing some crime work in another case. Pete's been all over another case too." She nods in understanding as she also follows them out of the section and into the hallways as it leads them all out to the entrance of the museum. Detective Jasper and Detective Harper were side by side as they waited for them.
"Hey guys!" Harper calls them out with a grin. They grinned back, not phased with their colleagues' surprise places to greet them. "Nik, how's it?" Jasper calls her out as he swiftly slings his arms around her shoulder. "It's good. Found some damning evidence and if you're asking me about the video? No, I'm sending it to the captain." She was having a field day teasing Jasper as the last time Jasper caught Nikki in the act of stealing a piece of candy near the entrance of an office place during their last case, he took a video of it. "Oh c'mon Niks. Please!" Jasper begged as his arms left her shoulders and he put both his hands together as if to beg the woman in front of him. "No." She replied amusingly. Harper, Derek and Pete were laughing at the antics stirred up by the couple.
"Can't believe they still stick together for 3 years." Derek, who was with the other two, watched the couple with amusement in his eyes. "You don't say. Even I can't believe the captain gave them the blessings before their parents did." Harper added on as he crossed his arms watching them. Pete kept quiet as he agreed on the two colleagues. Never had he seen in his life two colleagues of his, used to pine on each other like crazy for 5 years before confessing and yet their love story is still a blossoming continuation for the station to watch. "You wonder if they'll ever get married?" Pete popped up the question that lingered in his head. "At this rate, Jasper would've been a chicken to ask that to her. You've already seen who's the man between the two." Harper replied jokingly. A snort left Pete as he let out 'True'. "C'mon lads, let's go." Harper signals and the three leave the two love birds alone for the moment.
"Oh c'mon, give me the footage!" Jasper begged once again. "Never!" She chuckles loudly as she races to get to her patrol car with Aspen inside. "Oh whoa whoa whoa, what's this!" Aspen squeaked. "Lock the doors!" She giggles and Aspen doesn't complain and follows along to her request as she see's Jasper's figure and tries to open the doors. "C'mon Aspen! Open up!" The grin on his face settled as he jokingly got 'mad' at Aspen and Nikki's team up. "No can do! M'lady words!" She giggles in reply. Jasper let out a sigh and pointed at them with a grin. "It's not over." He then left the patrol car and went to his own. The two ladies looked at each other before laughing. "Did you really tell him?" Nikki giggled with amusement seeing Aspen smiled widely. "Yep. C'mon, let's go. Buckle up." As they settled down from the antics pulled by Jasper, Aspen had a question in mind. "Ever thought of getting married?" This caught Nikki by surprise but that made her think slightly longer.
"Hello, Earth to Nikki!" She mused and Nikki scoffed as a reply before taking her time to answer Aspen's question. "Honestly, I think so? I'm not sure yet." She shrugs. "Why not sure?" The older question. "It's not like I don't wanna get married. It's more of.. When is the right time to get married? Y'know how our lives are right? We're always on the move, case by case. Our lives are endangered everyday making the choice to be a cop. So, I feel like it's not really the right time and even he thinks so as well." Aspen listens well to Nikki's thoughts and she nods, taking into consideration how she views those kinds of things. "It's understandable, but honestly speaking, nothing is ever the right time so I suggest you do when you think it can be that perfect moment." Aspen's nonchalance comment struck Nikki differently but it did make her think to herself that her time was too short and she needed to be taking that chance if it felt like it was the right opportunity for her.
"You're right." She nods. Aspen smiles before she reverses the car and they sped back to the station for the night.
