Chapter 12: The Trap of Unrequited Love

Ngoc Lam walked over to stand by the window, the city lights at night softly filtering through the thin curtain, casting a warm golden hue over the luxurious room. She took a deep breath, feeling both anxious and filled with hope. She faced Thanh, her voice gentle but tense: "I... I'm pregnant."

Thanh's gaze suddenly froze, as if time had stopped. He looked at Ngoc Lam, his eyes full of doubt and complexity, as if he had just heard incredible news. His voice dropped, quietly asking: "Are you sure? We were careful."

Ngoc Lam nodded, her eyes shimmering with tears. She tried to suppress her emotions, but her voice trembled: "I'm sure. I've been to the doctor."

Thanh turned sharply, the white paper falling to the floor. He grasped her hand tightly, his eyes piercing through her intentions:

"So you faking taking birth control? You dare to deceive me?!"

Ngoc Lam wiped her tears, her voice hardening:

"It was you who pushed me to this point! Do you think I want to be a third party for life?"

Thanh's phone rang incessantly. The word "Wife" flashed like a blade before Ngoc Lam's eyes. He wanted to push her away; his shirt was wrinkled from her grasp, and his voice was hoarse:

"I have to go..."

She blocked the way, arms cradling her belly:

"If you walk out that door, I will slam my belly against this table!"

Thanh froze, his hand gripping the door frame. Outside, it suddenly began to rain. The sound of the rain roared like the cries of an unborn child.

Thanh sighed, his gaze lost in thought as he looked out at the chaotic little city beyond the glass window. Ngoc Lam felt her heart pounding; she feared that Thanh would heartlessly make her give up the baby. She moved closer, wrapping her arms around him, her voice filled with pain, tears streaming down her face: "Thanh, I know you always wanted a child. She can't give you one, but I can. Please keep this baby. I love you... I want us to have a real family."

Thanh turned back, his brows furrowing as if contemplating an important decision, his eyes calculating. Then he sighed, silencing the incessant ring of the phone. He caressed her back, speaking gently, his voice warm but anxious: "Don't worry, I won't force you to do anything you don't want. But we need to think carefully about this."

Ngoc Lam felt somewhat relieved, but she still couldn't shake the anxiety about the future. She knew that being pregnant would complicate matters, but she hoped that Thanh would stand by her and the baby. All she wanted was her own family, a man who belonged to her.

At 8:00 AM the next morning in the office, Thanh's phone vibrated incessantly. He opened his phone, his face changing color.

Meanwhile, Ngoc Lam sitting at her desk was also shocked to see a hateful text from an unknown number: "Whore carrying a baby!" She was horrified and then fainted amidst her colleagues' screams of fear.

After that day, in the company, employees were astounded when Ngoc Lam received a transfer notice to a branch in another city. Her parents, though reluctant, did not want to hinder their daughter's future. But no one expected Ngoc Lam to be arranged to live in luxury and comfort at Thanh's seaside villa.

Every day, Ngoc Lam was attended to by servants for meals and sleep, without having to worry about anything. She spent most of her time resting, reading, and dreaming of a bright future when the child was born and Thanh would officially become her husband.

The evening light dyed the garden behind the villa a deep purple; Ngoc Lam sat absent-mindedly on the stone bench, her cold hand gently stroking her round belly. The scent of jasmine wafted with the cold sweat on her neck – she had just gone through contractions signaling that the day of birth was near. The rustling wind whispered through the leaves like a warning: Thanh was growing distant.

Every call she made was met with the cold voice of his secretary, "He's in an urgent meeting, let me take a message." She tightened her grip on the phone, her nails digging into her palm. Was he avoiding her, or had he grown weary of her not being beautiful anymore? The affectionate smile every time Thanh stroked her belly,The eyes sparkled with an incomprehensible light. "You are the mother of his only heir," the man's voice deepened, his finger touching the wedding ring that had never left his hand.

One month. Only one month left.

Fateful afternoon came when two dark figures quietly appeared before the porch. The secretary smiled politely and nodded in greeting, while the man in the black suit, claiming to be a lawyer, opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of documents. "This is the transfer of ownership for Mr. Thành's villa to you," the lawyer's voice was smooth as oil, "Just sign here and this million-dollar villa will belong to you." Ngọc Lam held her breath, her heart pounding. "He is still taking care of me." The urgency made her take the pen and sign quickly, her eyes gliding over the tiny, dense lines of text. The lawyer raised an eyebrow slightly, his index finger pressing firmly on the last page – the place of her scrawled signature.

"Congratulations," the secretary smiled, her icy gaze flicking down to her belly, "Wishing you a smooth delivery, and an early birth of a son for the boss." They quickly gathered the files, bid her farewell, and left. The sound of their discussion blended with the rustling leaves, leaving a chill behind Ngọc Lam.

The sunlight faded.

The magnificent villa sank into darkness, as if it wanted to swallow the fragile happiness of the pregnant woman.
