Chapter 17- The way we feel
Glad to see you continued!!!
Danny hurriedly gets out of the cab immediately it comes to a stop. She brings out some money from her jacket and pays the driver, not really caring if it was more than what she owed.
As the cab drives off, she swiftly begins running while whispering under her breath, "Hang in there Willis."
🎗🎗🎗
Willis is seen seated on top of Danny's wishing tree with his throbbing head rested against a large branch. His swollen eyes and reddened face was a nice hint on what he was using his little alone time to do.
His whole body wavered in anger and sweat alongside his two eyes that flinched in fury.
He felt empty, useless, lost, so lost that he couldn't even notice calling her name from below the tree, or maybe he could, but just chose to ignore her.
"Willis! Willis, please answer me!"
"Danny, I want to be alone right now," he manages to say to her. But she definitely wasn't taking that for an answer.
"Willis, you can't be alone right now!... You need somebody!"
"I know, that's why I got myself."
"No! Not yourself! I meant me!"
What she said didn't seem to move him one bit. He kept starting up in the sky with his teary eyes, not minding anything else, even her.
Her rising frustration erases all the patience she in her, "That's it Willis! I'm coming up!" With that, Danny impatiently takes off her flat shoes and drops them beside his, before she began to climb, and climb, till she got to the top where he was. "If you think I'm going to leave, you're wrong! Willis...I'm not going to let you shut me out."
"I'm not shutting you out, I'm doing you a favour. You don't have to be here...you don't have to care."
"But I do!"
"Why?!" His question was like a bullet straight into the heart for her. He was right, why did she care? He didn't know the answer, but neither did she.
"I...I don't know." She stutters, hoping there was a chance he would still let her in. And luckily, she watches as he slowly scooches over for her.
She smiles in relief and forcefully lifts herself onto the big branch to a sitting position.
"I can wish for anything here, right?" He asks weakly before she could even get comfortable.
"Yeah, you can," she replies softly, slowly swinging her legs to and fro.
"So that means I can wish for some certain people to disappear too?"
"Willis!" Danny exclaims in surprise. How could he say that? Had it really come to that? She thought as she tries to make sense of what he had just said.
She continues, "You can't take back anything you wish for! I told you that!"
"And whoever said I would want to take it back?! Huh, Danny?!" He shoots back at her, fiercely looking her in the eyes.
She on her own part, couldn't even recognize who he was at the moment. It wasn't like the Willis she knew, this one was angrier, more aggressive, more broken.
Her urge to take away all his hurt grew stronger as he stared hard into her eyes.
"I don't have a father too, I remember telling you this Willis, the last time we came here," she says dropping her gaze away from his.
Right then he could feel his angry, furious self soften up a bit.
She continues, "At least you know what happened to your dad...I don't even know what happened to mine, all I know is that I grew up without one."
At that moment, Willis takes his time to close his eyes and process what she had just told him. He wasn't the only God damned person dealing with rough memories, she was too, but yet she had come all the way just for his problems, so who was he to act like a brat in front of her?
He reopens his eyes and places a hand on hers, "Danny..."
"...No, don't," she cuts him short and swiftly removes her hand from his touch as she fought back her tears.
He moves closer to her as all his anger replaced with guilt, "Danny, I didn't realize, if I had remembered..."
"...You don't have to, you have your problems to deal with."
He could clearly see what she was trying to do. And judging by what she had done today, he could tell she was just being her typical self, covering up her problems for the sake of others. What a girl she was, anyone would be lucky enough to have her.
He suspected his heart wasn't telling him lies from the first day, and his suspicions were right.
"I shouldn't be talking about this, it always brings back so much I can't bear. I don't even have any idea of what to wish for right now...so I'll just give you some space. Meet me on the ground when you are done, ok? I'll wait for you," she wipes the tears rolling down her face before attempting to leave.
But suddenly, without wasting any time, Willis gently grabs her hand and pulls her back in closer to him.
His action fills her up with sudden shock. She didn't know why, but the shock felt good. It felt satisfying.
For a moment there, it felt right to just stop and leave things the way they were, his hand on hers, making her feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
But no, he doesn't stop there, he turns her face softly to look back at him, gently wiping off her fallen tears from her cheeks.
The moment felt intense for her. He could tell, her extremely loud heartbeats as his lips drew closer to hers gave her away.
But that was one thing, the next was when they both felt all the emotion fade away, just like that.
Oh wait, her phone was ringing, yet again.
Why did they always have to get stopped halfway?
She reopens her eyes to see his filled with want for her and impatience for this nonsense.
"I'm so sorry," she whispers lightly close to his lips, as she reaches into the side pocket of her jacket to get the phone.
It must be Scott, she thought, he did say he was going to call me later.
With their eyes still on each other's, Willis waits impatiently as she attends to the call.
This can't be happening again, he thought, who is this person that keeps making sure this kiss will never work out? Is this some sort of joke? Cause if it is, I'm definitely not finding it funny...and I'm certainly not going to play along with it.
Before he knew it, he gently grips her hand, stopping her from bringing the phone out, and slowly with his other hand, he softly pulls her face to his, engaging them both in a warm passionate kiss.
At that moment, Danny felt soothing shivers running through her body. The way he had slowly slid his hands from where they were onto her waist and pulled her closer for a better taste of her had made her take her hand out of her pocket, forgetting all about the ringing phone.
The bravery of what he had just dared to do, had come as more of satisfaction than a surprise to him.
Damn! For how long has he been waiting to do this and now the moment was finally here.
He wondered how she was going to feel about it once he pulled away from her. Maybe she wouldn't feel the same way, maybe she still considered him as that stranger from the pharmacy. But then, she didn't stop, she continued, she kissed back, she loved it, he could feel it.
But then he wasn't sure, he wanted to find out. He needed to find out.
He slowly pulls back to have a better look at her face.
Her eyes were still closed, but then they slowly reopen again.
He notices a slight pinkish colour forming on her cheeks as a broad smile spreads across her face, and suddenly, he didn't have any doubts about how she felt of it anymore.
"Willis," she whispers under her breath while looking him straight in the eyes.
"Yes," he answers with his hands still firmly gripped on her waist.
"Do yourself a favour...don't push your mum away from you."
Oh, they were back to that.
"Ok, I won't."
"And even Fred," Danny adds.
Her words immediately send his both eyes closed, "Danny..."
"...No Willis, listen to me. If you push him away...you'll be pushing your mum away too, which would be literally the same thing."
He slowly reopens his eyes and drops his gaze away from her face. She was right, he knew she was right.
Danny continues, "Willis, your mother just told you that she was about to get married again...do you know how happy you should be right now?"
"Danny, even if it was just two years ago that I lost my dad...I'm not like her, I'm not ready to move on just like that."
"Yes, and I get that, and trust me, it's completely normal to feel that way. But he was her husband, so must have caused her a lot of pain too."
"Then why would she just move on, Danny?!"
She softly cups his face in her hands for a better look at his eyes. Now she wasn't the only one with teary eyes.
"Willis, life was kind enough to bring your mother someone to help with her grief and make her happy again, and thank your lucky stars that she was ready to move on. My mum still isn't ready, up till now. My dad's absence in the house is still very visible to us, yours is about to clear away."
"I don't think it can ever go away, Danny," he whispers harshly.
"It can try...you can try, just give her your approval. Don't hinder her from feeling complete again."
He looks harder into her eyes, doing that made him actually give it some thought, maybe she's right, maybe I'm to try to make amends with mom and Fred. God! This is not gonna be easy, but I have to at least try...for Danny.
"O-ok," he says with a slight hint of hesitation in his voice. But she wasn't buying it.
"Mean it, Willis!...I'm not playing around," she really wasn't, he read her quite perfectly.
"I'm not playing either Danny, I promise," he assures her, stroking her hair softly. She smiles at his gentle touch.
"Willis, I don't like it when you feel this way, all angry and furious. It doesn't quite suit you," she chuckles lightly.
"Then I'll change it for you Danny," he replies as he slowly pulls her closer and claims her lips once more.
