Chapter 1
*Shimizu Hada's POV:
I waited outside, in the autumn weather. I grunted as I shifted my body around, trying to increase body temperature.
A cool chill brushed against my skin, causing goosebumps to grow like tiny mountains. It felt like the Mother Nature herself was hated me too.
My eyes went to the cheese bus that was approaching and stopped in front of me. The stench of its engine arose into my nostrils, causing me to scrunch my nose upward.
Then the doors opened.
"Here we go" I mumbled to myself, inhaling the crisp hair.
I stepped into the bus. Walking down, my eyes danced around, trying to find a seat.
I overheard a girl mutter "Ugh, I can't stand them, experimented losers."
"Do you think he's evil?" I heard some junior ask another, his eyes piercing the side of my face.
"Don't be so loud, he might use his powers on you", the other said in a hushed tone.
I finally found an empty seat near the middle of the bus.
"I'm scared of experimented people, like what if they all decide to destroy San Francisco or something?" a girl whispered to her friend next to her.
"I know girl, like why don't they just get rid of those people? They could cause serious destruction. They are usually the ones committing crimes and murders" her friend replied.
I hope she realized that a few bad apples do not prove the whole tree is bad.
"Nobody likes the experimented!" some guy yelled from the back of the bus, followed by a chuckle. Clearly, he wanted to get a reaction out of me.
"Shh, stop Brad, he'll hear you and use his powers on you" his girlfriend whispered to him.
"But Lexi, Shimizu's a punk. He won't do jack shit if I mess with him. He's a wimp!" Brad replied, loud enough for everyone to hear.
The bus driver didn't even care to say something. She just kept driving as if nothing was happening.
I bet even if there was a brutal fight on the bus, she still would've kept driving and not pay any attention to it.
I rolled my eyes and placed my earphones into my ears. I blasted some heavy metal.
Next thing I knew, I felt several balled up pieces of paper repeatedly hit the back of my head, but every time I looked back, people were acting as if they weren't paying me any attention.
I slowly turned back around.
It happened again and I quickly turned around for the second time.
Everyone was talking to their friends or looking away.
"Stupid bastards" I mumbled under my breath as I slouched down in my seat. The paper wouldn't have been able to hit me that way.
But a few moments later, one bounced off the top of my head. That's when I snapped.
"Can you stop throwing paper at me?!" I turned around and yelled at Brad.
He just glanced at me.
"I have no idea what he is talking about. I guess his powers are making him even weirder" Brad snickered to another boy before they both laughed. The other students laughed too.
I swear, those guys in the back section of the bus were full of it. I bet if I used my powers on them, I'll shut every one of them right up.
But, violence is never the answer, and I even promised to my parents that I won't ever use my powers on another person. You can't fight wrong with wrong.
"Shimizu! Sit down and stop yelling please!" the bus driver snapped at me.
"Oh, so now all of a sudden she wants to speak up" I thought to myself as I glared at the bus driver.
"Please don't tell me you didn't just see them throwing balled up pieces of paper at me!" I yelled at the bus driver in an irritated manner.
She blew her breath.
"If anyone of you are throwing things at him, stop it now! the bus driver scowled at the students as she looked up at her rear view mirror.
The students on the bus began mumbling and groaning. They mumbled things like "snitch" or "tattletale", even though I didn't tell on anyone, but whatever.
So in case you wanted to know, that's the reason why I hated my school.
The students were complete assholes.
The school I went to was Davidson High School in San Francisco, California. May I just say, it was hell.
That school was absolutely rough; constant fights, graffiti on the outside walls of the school, food fights, you name it, they had it.
The only things that were good about the school was the fact that they had really good sports teams and how supportive the teachers were, well some of them.
As you could see, I wasn't very liked, and it wasn't because I was a freshman (not many people liked freshman). It was because of the fact that I was experimented on. It was because I could control an element.
Most of my peers were scared of me because I could do something that was always thought to be impossible. I was seen as a freak because of my inhuman ability, I was stereotyped as cruel, mean and inhumane.
Regardless of how timid and shy I was, I tried my best to make friends, but everyone else tried avoiding me.
Even though most of the kids at school were scared of me, there were a some who loved teasing me behind my back, and some who were bold and open with it.
Sometimes I would find words like "freak" and "kill yourself" written on my desk.
Majority of my peers never openly bullied me for fear that I may one day snap.
This has been going on since elementary school.
Because of my powers, I had weird colored eyes. They were too different and unusual. Just by looking at them, my peers could tell I was experimented on.
Sometime in 5th grade, I accidentally used my powers during a project that involved water. That sparked everyone's fear of me.
Long story short, I was looked at as a freak and a monster for most of my life.
I wanted to be normal, I hated my powers. They were the main reason why I was an outcast and the reason of why I didn't have any friends. My powers were like a curse.
An elemental curse.
The only person who actually loved my powers was my five year old sister Hikari. My parents didn't necessarily hate them or love them, but they just accepted them because they knew there was no way I could get rid of them. They just decided to deal with it, even though they knew I was suffering because of them.
But like I said before: there was no getting rid of them, so I would have to deal with them for the rest of my life.
The day before, I went to Barnes and Noble and purchased a book called "The Four Elements".
Even though I hated the fact that I could control an element, learning about the elements was still fun to me.
Backwards isn't it? Yeah, I know.
Maybe, it could explain a way to get rid of my powers.
The book was about twenty bucks, but it was worth it.
Later today in algebra 1 class, we had a test. You probably thought I did great on it didn't you? No!
When I got my test grade back and saw that it was low, I felt emotionally sick for the next hour or so of that class, until the bell finally rung for dismissal.
I stormed out of the classroom, went down to the second floor and opened my locker to get my things.
"Maybe playing video games when I get home will ease my mind a bit" I said out loud.
Before I could even walk three feet after slamming my locker shut, I tripped over something. A leg.
"Oops, sorry, hahaha" a blonde girl chuckled before she ran off with her friends, they were laughing together as they made their way out the school.
Remember when I said majority of the school were scared of me? Yeah, some figure that since I don't condone violence or use my powers, I am an easy target to pick on.
I sighed as I got up and dusted myself off.
I was already in a terrible mood because of my test grade, and what that girl did made it even worse.
I hated this school, I hated the way I was treated.
Even if I tried to make friends, I still had not-so-good social skills. I always sat alone at lunch and did group projects by myself.
I was the definition of a loner, I was always by myself.
Nobody cared if I was bullied or feared. The teachers pretended to not even notice, but I bet if I wasn't an Experimented person, they would've said something. But sadly, nobody even cared to say anything, nobody cared to do something.
Until today.
It was dismissal, all of the kids were walking out of the school's main doors along with me. The cheese buses were already outside for us. As I was walking, I was reading the book I got from Barnes and Noble.
I wasn't messing with anyone, I was just minding my own business when out of nowhere, three sophomores decided to mess with me.
One of them was a brunette girl with shoulder-length hair and glaring blue-gray eyes. The others two were tall blonde boys. The boys were identical twins.
The brunette girl snook up from my right as I was reading and snatched the book out of my hand.
Before I could react, one of the blonde twin boys picked me up by my collar and pinned me against the brick wall of the building so I wouldn't be able to do anything.
The other twin just stood there and laughed as he recorded the whole thing with his phone.
I struggled and shouted at the guy to put me down.
All the students were watching yet did nothing, they just recorded with their phones. As usual.
The brunette haired girl started taunting me.
"What'cha reading smart-ass?!"
She looked at the book and started laughing.
"Really?! A book about the elements?! I swear you people are so freaking ridiculous. Your powers don't make you a superhero, they make you a freak! An outcast and a hell-raising prick! You're nothing but a freak show, nothing but a walking government experiment!"
She seemed to have an idea, then looked at me with an evil smirk.
"If you want this book then why don't you use your powers to try to stop me from pouring water on it?" She smiled cruelly at me as she slowly grabbed a water bottle from the side of her book bag.
I refused to use my powers. I believed violence wasn't the answer and I didn't want to give in.
I tried to squirm out of the boy's grasp as he was pinning me to the wall, which only resulted in me getting punched in the stomach.
He let me go and I collapsed to the ground.
I scrunched up as I held my stomach and groaned in pain.
"Aww, too bad your book had to go waste" she sneered as she took the top off the bottle of water. She held the opened book in one hand and the water bottle in the other.
"P-please...d-don't" I groaned out, still on the ground.
Then something amazing and out of the ordinary happened.
Before the brunette girl could be able to pour water on my book, another girl quickly came up from behind her and tapped her shoulder.
Immediately after the brunette girl turned around to see who it was, the girl punched her with all of her might, making the brunette girl fall with a loud thud.
There was a huge "ooooo" coming from the crowd of students that were watching.
"You little-" she grumbled. She got up and took off her book bag, and charged at the girl.
The other bullies just stood there and watched the fight, cheering on the brunette girl.
"Come on Kimberly!"
"Whoop her Kimberly!"
The two girls were punching, pulling each others hair, dragging each other around, tumbling, and yanking each other's hair again.
You know, the usual stuff girl's do when they fight.
The girl yanked Kimberly's hair so much that Kimberly fell to the ground. She ended up being dragged across the concrete as the girl was hitting her on the side of her head.
Eventually, Kimberly got back up, but her body was swung again as the girl yanked her hair and punched her repeatedly. Kimberly kneed the girl in the stomach before flipping her over her shoulder, but the girl kicked her leg which resulted in both ending up on the ground. But the girl had an advantaged and ended up getting on top of Kimberly before they started scratching and punching each other.
I know it sounds hilarious, but if you were there, you would've seen how brutal it was.
It was the most intense girl fight I had ever seen.
The two twin bullies that were watching saw that Kimberly was losing and decided to run over to help.
One of them tried to push the girl off of Kimberly. It worked, but Kimberly was not done.
They held on to each other's hair. The girl was bruised up and Kimberly had a bloody nose, but I could tell neither were phased.
Right after Kimberly got on top of the girl and both started punching, the school police officers and even teachers came in between to stop everything. The fight lasted a good thirty seconds.
They grabbed Kimberly off of the girl and grabbed a hold of both of them.
The boys were sent to the administrator's office for being involved in the fight.
When Kimberly maintained her composure and calmed down, the school police took her back into the school into to the administrator's office as well.
As I grabbed my book, got back up from off the ground and dusted myself off, Kimberly and a couple school police officers that were holding her arms walked pass me.
Kimberly gave me an evil look for a few moments before looking away as they went inside the school.
I gulped. That look gave me severe goosebumps.
A few seconds later, the girl that fought Kimberly started to walk by me. She was being guided by two teachers.
I could finally get a good glimpse of the girl as she was on her way inside.
She was Caucasian, a little shorter than me and had an small frame.
She had on red high top Converse, a red crop-top and light blue skinny jeans that showed off her figure. It made me blush a little. I cursed at myself for looking at her like that, but I couldn't help it.
She had milky pale skin. Freckles filled her cheeks and her nose bridge, making her look innocent and cute in appearance.
By her characteristics, I assumed she was probably of either Irish or Scottish descent.
She had a small pointy nose and wavy-curly red hair that went down to her mid-back.
Her hair was fiery, like a bright beautiful flame. The way her hair swayed as she was walking away made it look like fire.
By the vibe she was giving off, I assumed she was a tomboy, but even if it was true, she was a gorgeous one.
After she and the officers walked pass, I glanced through the main doors to look at her again, she looked back at me and a small smile appeared.
What struck me the most about her was not only her beauty, but her eyes.
They were a blazing orange color.
Usually for a redhead, they would be blue or brown or maybe even green, but orange?! I didn't even know orange colored eyes was a thing.
That's something different. She's something different.
After she smirked at me, she turned back around as if nothing happened.
Ever since then, I needed to see that girl again.
I wanted to tell her "thank you" for what she did.
But because of her unique eye color, I did wondered if she experimented on? What if there are others at this school? What if I'm not the only one at school? What if she was just wearing contacts?
I had so many questions that I wanted to be answered.
It had been about three days since I'd seen her.
I thought about the things I would say to her once I saw her again and I practiced saying those things just in case I bumped into her at school.
I even tried some flirting techniques, but I had to cancel it. I didn't want her to think of me as a weirdo.
It was finally Friday, three days after the incident. I decided to stay after for coach class in algebra 1. I needed some extra help on a certain topic of math that me and my class had a test on. You know, the test I got a low score on.
Even though I was one of the smartest people in my school and made one of the top grades (not to brag), I still wasn't the best at math.
Once the bell rung for dismissal, I grabbed my binder and rushed out of art class.
I made my way to my locker to get my things.
"Looks like Shimizu has a little girlfriend to protect him" one boy said to another as they were walking pass me.
"I feel bad for him though, that girl is scary as shit. She might destroy the guy. He wouldn't know how to handle her" the other boy responded.
I looked at them with furrowed eyebrows.
Her defending me didn't mean that she liked me. I didn't even know the girl. I just wanted to say thank you and maybe, just maybe become friends with the girl, if I could find her.
I walked upstairs to the third floor of the school and took a bathroom break.
Once I was done, I walked out of the bathroom and down to Ms. Belowski's (My algebra 1 teacher) room.
"Hopefully I won't get anymore brain farts that will prevent me from understanding this topic" I sighed before opening the classroom door.
When I walked in, I saw not one but three other students sitting near each other on the other side of the classroom. Two girls and one boy.
After a few seconds of examining them I realized that one of them was the girl who stood up for me a few days ago. She and the two others were talking about something that was probably none of my concern.
"I'm going to the teacher's lounge, I will be back in about five minutes or so" Ms. Belowski grunted as she was approaching the classroom door, carrying a huge stack of papers. Her chestnut brown hair that was placed into a ponytail swung as she quickly walked over.
"Do you need any help ma'am?" I asked. "You look a little, well, in need."
"Oh no, I am fine, really" she smiled as she left out the room. "I got it."
"Okay" I mumbled.
I placed my book bag down on a desk that was near the back of the room. I blew my breath as I sat down in the chair.
I was across the room from those three.
I stared at the redheaded girl as she was talking to whom I supposed were her friends.
It took several moments but eventually, the redheaded girl noticed that I was staring at her. She stopped talking and stared back.
The other two noticed that she was staring and looked back at me.
It felt kind of awkward, but I had to try to be approachable and social, so I bundled up all of my courage to speak.
"Um, hi" I greeted in a wimpy tone of voice with a wave.
The redheaded girl was just as beautiful as she was a few days ago.
She had on a black shirt. Her skinny jeans were dark blue and her shoes were black and white low-top Vans. Her hair was in a high ponytail this time.
Her face was serious and unwelcoming, as if she didn't want to be bothered with.
Next to her was a cute black girl with green earthy eyes. They were pretty, but an unnatural color.
She had dark skin and afro-textured black hair that were in two high buns. By the energy that she gave off, she seemed friendly.
Her T-shirt was green with black suspenders. She had on dark blue shorts with black thigh-high socks and wore low-top black Converse. In her hand was Capri-sun that she was drinking before she turned to look at me.
She was on the thinner side, but not too thin.
Next to her was a pretty good-looking Latino guy. His skin was tan and his eyes were a piercing purple color. He gave off a laidback, chill vibe.
His outfit was a dark purple polo shirt, black jeans with a black belt to hold his jeans in place. His shoes were purple and black Air Jordan's. His hair was dark brown, shoulder-length and wavy.
The redhead and her friends looked so cool, but I am pretty sure they wouldn't want to talk to me.
I was just a nobody.
