Chapter 23

*Beval Hernandez's POV:

"Will time ever go faster?! I'm ready to start the revolt and destroy this camp! I'm going to give these assholes a taste of this dirty snow!" Mohammed ranted as he shoved snow along with us.

"Calm down and hush up man, everything will go smoothly, but what I need you to not do is to shout out our plan!" I said passive-aggressively.

It was about 8:30 pm. Thirty minutes from now, the guards will ring the bell to signal that it's bedtime, but little do they know about what we were planning. And we and the prisoners wanted it to stay that way.

"You guys are life savers, coming up with this plan to revolt was genius, even if some prisoners die, they will not be forgotten, nor will they die in vain. Their bravery will be remembered and will encourage every person in the world that was experimented on to fight back and not allow this to happen" one of my cabin-mates Carlos once said to me yesterday. But sadly, Carlos was taken to the death chambers earlier today.

I will never forget him or what he said. It will stay with me for the rest of my life.

But even if we weren't the ones who came up with the plan (it was Danny's idea really), me, Shimizu and Mohammed were still looked up to as leaders of the revolt and were treated as such.

Some prisoners shared ideas with us and gave us suggestions on what to do while we kill off the guards. One prisoner suggested that we should take care of the ones in the towers first. The reason was because they had machine guns, so they would be able to kill more prisoners than the guards who only had handguns and AK47s.

That was a really good suggestion.

Another had the suggestion that we should save the prisoners that were hopefully still alive and not executed yet in the death chambers while the revolt was going on.

Another prisoner told me that an easy way to not get shot was to hide behind cabins and trees and use them as "bodyguards" from the guard's bullets.

Those were also great suggestions.

"Sorry Bev" Mohammed apologized.

"It's cool, just don't be so loud. Guards are around" I responded in a slight whisper.

"I know, it's just that I'm ready to get out of here. This place is hell and it's affecting me physically and mentally, if I see another prisoner get beat up by a guard, I'm going t-

"Ahhhhhh!"

Mohammed was interrupted by a scream.

Me, Shimizu and Mohammed turned our heads back to see what was going on.

It was a prisoner who was getting beaten by a guard.

Kind of crazy how he literally was about to say it and it happened.

"If I tell you to scrub, I don't wanna hear a no! If I say do it, you do it! Understand?!"

The guard was shouting at the boy as he was punching him in his face and chest and dragging him around. The boy was screaming, crying and groaning in pain.

"Please stop, please! Somebody help me!" the boy moaned as he cried.

This boy looked no older than eleven or twelve years old and he was getting beaten like he was a grown man losing a street fight. There is a special place in hell for these guards.

Even though I couldn't really see everything because it was so dark, by the way the boy was getting beaten, I was sure that he was bleeding like crazy.

The guard started to stomp the kid repeatedly in the upper torso and head.

"I can't wait to get rid of all you experimented people. You all cause trouble everywhere you go! Nothing but the scums of society, and that's all you will ever be!" the guard yelled in anger.

The other prisoners couldn't do anything, all they could do was to keep working and watch as their fellow friend was being beaten to a bloody pulse. If they would've done something, they would've been shot or beaten along with him.

Me, Shimizu and Mohammed watched in horror.

All because the prisoner didn't want to do the work that the guard told him to do, he was being beaten terribly for it, right in front of our eyes.

I forced myself to look away, it was too much for me. I didn't do well when it came to gore.

But sooner or later, I was going to have to deal with it because during the revolt, there was going to be a lot of it.

Me, Shimizu and Mohammed forced themselves to turn away and we continued shoveling.

Shimizu was trembling and I didn't think it was because he was cold, I think it was because he was angry. I could tell based on his facial expression. His face was becoming red and he slowly shook his head as he shoveled.

"I'm ready to kill each and every one of these bastards" he mumbled to himself.

Never had I ever seen Shimizu so angry, nor did I knew he could say things like that. I guess you truly never know a person.

"Soon Shimizu, soon we will. Don't you worry" I replied as I angrily looked back at the guard, whom was leaving the prisoner laying there. The boy was struggling and moaning in pain.

Several prisoners tried to help the boy. As they were bringing him back on his feet, I could see that he was limping.

"What weapon are you guys using?" Mohammed asked me.

I turned my head and looked at Mohammed.

"Huh?" I asked, not hearing him clearly.

"I said, what weapon are you going to use against the guards?"

That was kind of a dumb question.

"Um, a gun, what else?" I asked.

"You can use sticks to stab guards and sharp glass to cut their throats."

I tilted my head, furrowed my eyebrows and blinked rapidly at Mohammed, giving him that "are you dumb?!" look.

"Now let's be real, which is faster? A bullet from a guard's gun? Or a thrust of a sharp stick or piece of glass from a prisoner?! Secondly, which do you think will do more damage?! It's better to use a gun, you will take out more guards doing so" I explained to him as if he was dumb before I continued shoveling.

"I agree with you, I was just telling you what some prisoners were saying. It is kind of dumb in my opinion. It's better to attack a guard-...wait a minute, now I see what the prisoners were talking about" Mohammed said as he stroked his chin.

I stopped shoveling and looked at him, wondering what foolishness he had to say next.

"So, we're going to attack guards and kill them, then take their guns and kill other guards with them, right?"

"Well, yeah" I replied, trying to see where he was going with this.

"But what are we going to kill them with is the question?"

"I always thought that the prisoners would just gang up on the guards and take their guns, then shoot them with it" Shimizu explained to Mohammed.

"No, that's too risky, you got to run up on them, then hit or stab them with something hard or sharp, like a sharp piece of glass, a brick or a sharp stick for example" Mohammed explained to us. Trying to get us to understand where he was coming from.

"Yeah, that actually makes sense" I replied as I nodded my head.

"This snow is getting pretty tough to shovel now. It's as hard as a rock" Shimizu complained as he struggled to dig up the snow.

"Take it easy man, we only have another ten more minutes. I wouldn't force myse-"

Before I could continue my sentence, Mohammed started vigorously coughing and wheezing.

"You okay?" Shimizu asked as he tried to help him.

"I don't feel too good. I'm a little dizzy, but I should be alright" Mohammed groaned as he swayed from side to side. He began to trip over himself.

"Something's wrong, I'm going to go sit him down at our cabin steps" I told Shimizu.

"Wait, where is your cabin again?" he asked.

"Our cabin is literally over there" I told Shimizu as I pointed.

"No Beval, really, I'm alright" Mohammed groaned with a smile as he tried to walk by himself, pulling away from me.

I stopped and looked at him, grabbing him arm.

"No, you're not" I replied in a serious manner.

Me and Mohammed's cabin was about a hundred feet away.

I wrapped my arm around Mohammed's torso to give him support and we both made our way to our cabin. Once I sat him down on the cabin porch, I sat next to him.

"I told you I was alright. It's just that the cold is getting to me Beval. It has been for a few days now. I'm surprised it's not affecting you. You must have a strong immune system" Mohammed said to me as he made a faint smile.

"I mean, I guess I do. The most I have been getting were sniffles" I shrugged. I felt Mohammed's forehead.

"God Mo, you're pretty hot."

"Aww, thanks man. You're too kind" he said with a cheeky smile.

I cut my eyes at him and blinked slowly.

"I was just kidding, haha, I know what you meant. I must have a fever or something" he continued as he made a faint laugh.

"Chill with the jokes or I might just leave you here at this camp to fend for yourself" I said, trying to be serious, even though I was kidding. That shut him up really quick.

I stayed there with him for the next ten minutes, until it was 9:00pm and time for bed. Shimizu waved goodbye to us and headed back to his cabin.

After a little while, Mohammed claimed that he wasn't dizzy anymore and could now function, even if it seemed like he had a fever.

Me, Mohammed and our cabin-mates went inside and laid down for bed, but none of us went to sleep.

It was 2:00 am. It had been about five hours since the bell rung for bed, none of our cabin-mates went to sleep, not one of them were an inch of tired. We were just silently and patiently waiting for the clock to strike 3:00 am.

An hour ago, a guard came in to check up on us and we had to pretend that we were all asleep. It worked. The guard fell for it.

Me, Mohammed and our cabin-mates were in the dark, gathered around and quietly discussing our plan, making sure that everything was going to go well.

"Alright, do you guys have your weapons to use against the guards before you go and take their guns?" Mohammed asked us with a loud whisper.

The prisoners whispered a bunch of "yes's'", "yeah's", and "I think so's".

"Yeah, I'm going to use this brick" I said as I showed the prisoners the concrete brick in my hand.

"Now that'll do some damage" Mohammed winked at me.

"Does everyone remember exactly what to do?" I asked. But I continued before anyone could answer. "Just in case you don't, immediately at 3:00 am, we barge out of our cabins. We will attack any guards in sight, take their guns and shoot other guards with them, then, we will go from there. I just wanted to make sure you guys remember."

"We heard the plan so much, how we could forget?" a prisoner said to me in sarcasm.

"Good. Therefore, nothing can go wrong. Nothing should go wrong" I replied, ignoring his sarcasm as I rubbed my hands together.

"Well, we have an hour until the revolt, what do we do now?" another prisoner asked.

"I want all of you guys to discuss where to go after the revolt. I recommend going into hiding somewhere. Me and Mohammed will discuss privately where me, him and my other friends will go after the revolt" I said as I wrapped my arm around Mohammed.

"You guys and Shimizu really are life saviors. Thank you for everything. It will be a pleasure revolting with you" another prisoner said to us.

"No. Thank you. You guys are the leaders of this revolt because you control what happens. Just know that freedom is only an hour away" I said back to him, then at everyone.

"Fighting with you guys is an honor and if we die, we die for a good reason. Plus, this revolt will be a good stress reliever if you think about it; we are killing the ones who are harming us" another prisoner said. The other prisoners nodded in agreement.

Besides my family and friends, never had I ever felt this much love from a whole group of people before. Never had I ever had anyone looked up to me like they did. It felt amazing.

"Let's say we give these bastards a piece of our mind, and whatever you do, show them no mercy. Show pain and suffering, show torture and despair. An eye for an eye. They put us through torture, humiliation, anger, sadness and pain, and we will put them through the same thing" I ranted as I clenched my fist.

The prisoners cheered in agreement quietly.

I looked at Mohammed.

"Mohammed, let's go over here and discuss privately about where we will go after the revolt" I said as I made a quick tilt of my head over to an empty corner of the cabin.

"Uhh sure" he said with a shrug.

As we were walking over to the corner, the cabin-mates were all in a group, talking and making plans on where to go after the revolt.

"I think Mina has a nuclear shelter" I told Mohammed.

"Uhhh, who is Mina again? I forgot" he asked.

"She was this girl that I liked who so happened to be the reason why me and my friends are here. She set us up" I explained.

Mohammed looked into my eyes.

"Oof, that sucks. But even through all of that, do you still like her?"

I scoffed.

"Why would I still like that jerk after what she did to us?!"

"I have a way of telling emotion by looking into the eyes. After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul" Mohammed crosses his arms and said in a snooty way.

I paused. I didn't want to answer. The truth was, I still liked Mina, even if she was the one who set us up to be in this camp and to die a short time later. Obviously, her father was the one who taught her those things and introduced her to W.E.A, she just followed in his footsteps.

I bet they were probably laughing about it now.

Even though she set us up and pretended to like me, I still liked her. Don't get me wrong, I was slowly and surely trying to get over her, it wasn't going to be easy though, she had been my crush since 6th grade.

"Well, do you still like her?" Mohammed asked again, trying to snap me out of my thoughts.

I tried to look away from him. My mouth was twitching a little.

"Uhhh, do you not what me to ask th-"

"Yes, I like her" I forced myself to say, interrupting Mohammed. "I liked her for a long time and for her to just set me, Shimizu, Robin and Gaia up was just plain wrong for her to do so. Even through all of that, I still like her. I know I shouldn't, but I do. I am trying to get over her, I really am, but it's so hard."

"Hmm" Mohammed responded, shaking his head in understanding. He placed his hand on my shoulder.

"Hey man, you will, don't you worry. It will take some time. I can't imagine my crush going against me like that. That's harsh, and this is coming from a guy who doesn't even have a crush. I know you are going through a lot of emotional pain right now, but I'm telling you, it will come to pass. But let's be real, she was hot, wasn't she?"

I chuckled and nodded.

"Don't be so hard on yourself man. Who's to say what's right and what's wrong anyway?" he continued.

I cocked an eyebrow. "Uuhh-"

"Don't answer that. It wasn't meant to be answered" he giggled.

I giggled as well.

"So umm, you said she had a nuclear shelter huh?"

"Yeah, she told us it was abandoned during World War 2 and is almost finished getting fixed up. It could fit hundreds of people inside, but right now, we only need several people. Me, you, my friends, my family, my friend's family, your family, etc." I explained to him.

Mohammed suddenly looked down. His emotion changed.

"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked, tilting my head downward to look at his face.

He looked up at me.

"Well, you see Beval, my family won't be coming along."

I was confused at what he said. Why wouldn't his family come along to hide with us?

"Why?" I asked.

He paused for a minute.

"Mohammed?" I called out.

His eyes became teary.

"My mom, dad and older brother were all killed."

"What?!" I said in shock.

"The F.E.M.A guards killed them as they were trying to take me away. My family tried to fight for me, and it resulted in-"

Mohammed stopped as he began to weep.

"Oh Mohammed" I sighed in pity. I quickly hugged him. He cried even more now.

"It's okay, it's okay, it's going to be alright. I promise. I never knew you were going through all of this. You seemed so happy all the time. I rarely if ever saw you sad. I never knew you were hiding that much pain inside. You know, you kind of remind me of my friend Gaia."

Mohammed looked up at me.

"How?"

I thought about it for a minute. She held a lot of things in as well and was very emotional at times. She wasn't as outspoken as Robin was. Shimizu was only outspoken when he wanted to be.

Mohammed hiding in his feelings and crying when he shared them was what reminded me of Gaia.

"Do you have a habit of hiding your feelings and emotions inside?" I asked him.

"Well, yeah. Why?"

"That's why you remind me of her" I nodded with a small smile.

"Really?"

"Yup. But about your mom and dad, I am terribly sorry for your loss. I really am. I know what it's like losing someone close to you because not too long ago, I lost my grandfather to lung cancer. But don't you worry, your mom, dad and brother are smiling down at you from heaven and might even be cheering you on when you revolt. Make them proud" I smiled as I placed my hands on his shoulders.

Mohammed smiled back, tears still streaming down his face.

"I will."

"I know you will" I nodded at him.

"So, uh, where is the nuclear shelter?" he asked, changing the subject.

"Hmm, I don't know."

"How do you not know?!"

"Because Mina and her dad said they had a map to the shelter. But my plan was that we would sneak into her house to retrieve it. She lives in Sunnyside, San Francisco."

"Sunnyside?!"

"Yeah, Sunnyside."

"Sunnyside is like the Beverly Hills of San Francisco. I didn't know she's one of those upper-class people. She must have bodyguards and maximum security in her mansion or something, how the hell do we get pass that?!" Mohammed asked, probably thinking I was insane.

I smirked at Mohammed.

"We will figure it out."

"And if we get caught?"

"We won't get caught. But if we do, then I guess we'll just kiss our ass goodbye" I laughed.

Mohammed looked at me, not believing what I was saying.

"I'm kidding. But we'll think of something. Once we get the map, we will search for my family and my friend's families, and together we will find the nuclear shelter and live there until the revolt is over. I've heard that it was big."

Mohammed looked away, sighed, then looked back at me.

"Alright. Sounds like a plan" he said, trying his best to trust me.

He stretched out his hand for me to shake it. I shook it and smiled.

"So, what do we do now Beval? We have another forty minutes left until the revolt" a boy asked me as he and the crowd of prisoners looked over at us.

I looked over at the cabin door.

They followed my gaze.

"Until then, we'll wait" I said.
