Chapter 4
*Beval Hernandez's POV:
(His name is pronounced: Bev-val)
"Alright, that's done for coach class, see you on Monday and have a great weekend!" Ms. Belowski waved as we left the classroom.
"You have a great weekend as well Ms. Belowski!" I said back at her with a wink.
"Awww Beval you're so kind, unlike some of the students in this school," she responded passive aggressively as she glared at Robin.
Robin glared back and smiled, pleased that she annoyed another teacher.
After we left the classroom, we started to make our way down the hall and out of the school's main doors.
There was an awkward silence between all of us. It lasted from the time we left coach class to the time we were walking out of the building, well until Shimizu spoke up.
"So, what powers can you guys control?" he asked.
"Air" I replied.
"I can control Earth" Gaia said in her perky voice.
"Fire" Robin said to Shimizu as she made a flame from her hand.
"Whooaaa, that's so cool!" Shimizu said with wide eyes. "What do you use your earth powers for Gaia?"
"I can use them to make dead plants come back to life and to make things grow. Plus, animals love me" she responded with a smile.
A second after Gaia said this, a bird landed on her shoulder. She caressed the bird's head with her finger.
"I use mine to keep me cool during the summer, all I have to do is just blow cool air in my face" I spoke as I made it happen. My brown hair danced gracefully as it made contact with the wind.
"Nice!" Shimizu replied.
"I don't really like using mine, they're too destructive. But when I do use them, I usually use them to cook things" Robin spoke up.
Shimizu nodded in response.
"Yeah, I remember during the summer, me and Beval went camping with Robin and her parents. Instead of us cooking our marshmallows over a fire, we did it from the flame that formed from Robin's hand" Gaia reminisced.
"Amazing" Shimizu replied in deep interest.
"So Shimizu, where do you live, if you mind me asking?" I asked him.
"Oh, it's fine, I live not too far from our school, on Honeycomb Drive."
"Really? I live down the street from you, on 512 Honeycomb Drive," Robin said to Shimizu as places her hands in her pockets.
"I live on 424 Honeycomb Drive. I never seen you though."
"I don't really get out much."
"I'm the one who usually drags Robin out of the house so she can get some fresh air and sunshine. You live pretty close to me Shimizu, I live on 280 Sunflower Ave!" Gaia said to Shimizu with excitement.
"I live on 46 E. Main Street, it's around the corner from Gaia's house, near Downtown. My house is right next to the restaurant my parents own called "El Sabroso". They opened up the restaurant about a year after we came here from Mexico when I was a baby" I said proudly.
"Your parents own that restaurant?! Sadly, I've never been there before, but I've heard the food was amazing" Shimizu said.
"Yup. El mejor restaurante de San Francisco" I said in Spanish.
Shimizu, Gaia and Robin all looked at each other, then looked at me, confused.
"I said it was the greatest restaurant in San Francisco. Jeez guys, pay attention in Spanish class for once."
"I don't take Spanish, I take French! Why don't you take it, since you're so good at it?" Robin asked me with a smart tone.
"Why take something that I am already fluent in?" I asked with a cocked eyebrow as I placed my hands into my pockets.
"It would be an easy "A". Don't rub it in our faces about how you're the only bilingual one out of all of us!" Robin mocked, then scowled at me.
"Actually, I'm bilingual too" Shimizu said, raising his hand a little.
"What language can you speak?" Robin asked him.
"Japanese. I'm Japanese. My parents lived in Japan there whole lives...well, until they moved here" he replied.
"Cool! Me and Robin can only speak English" Gaia stated as she began skipping happily. "Oh Robin, I forgot to ask you, don't you have soccer practice today?"
"Nah, Coach Milford was sick, so we decided to cancel practice today."
"Oh okay. So, in that case, what do you guys want to do? Me personally, I'm hungry, we should go catch a bite" Gaia suggested as she rubbed her stomach.
About 10 minutes later, we arrived to my house.
"I'm about to go into the restaurant to talk to my mom and dad real quick, you guys can come inside if you like" I told them before I went inside.
"Shimizu, you should meet his family. They're really nice" Gaia suggested as she elbowed him.
"Oh okay, sure. Hey, wait up!" Shimizu yelled out as he ran to me. He began following me into the restaurant. Gaia and Robin waited outside.
My family's restaurant was decent in size. The smell of tacos and fajitas filled the whole place. The walls were a welcoming light green color. The chairs and tables were made of wood and mariachi band statues were to the right as soon as you walked in. Traditional Mexican music was playing.
Waiters and waitresses were walking around serving people. The restaurant wasn't that crowded, not too little people and not too many.
It was 3:30pm on a Friday afternoon. Friday nights and Saturday nights were the most crowded times. Monday afternoons were the least crowded.
Shimizu stood by the door timidly and waited for me to introduce him to my parents and older sister.
As I was on my way to go find my parents, I saw my older sister Isabella (whom works there with our parents) crouching behind the menu stand, placing menus in order. I decided to introduce Shimizu to her first.
I signaled Shimizu over and he got up from his chair and walked towards me.
My sister Isabella was sort of tall. She was about 5'9, 19 years old and one hundred-forty pounds.
Her skin was a shade lighter than mine. She had chest length, wavy dark brown hair with red streaks.
Her eyes were a chocolate brown color and she had a hoop nose ring, along with many piercings on her left ear. She was emo and had been for some years.
She wasn't the prettiest girl, nor was she the ugliest. Her looks were average.
"Hey Isabella, you're here early, your shift doesn't start till four" I sneered as I rested my arm on the hosting stand.
"Shut up Beval, I decided to start my shift thirty mins early to get some extra money. Now if you excuse me I will continue hosting" she scowled as she stood up.
"You do realize that there aren't that many costumers during Friday afternoons right?" I asked with a cocked eyebrow.
"Well yeah, we are usually crowded on Wednesday evenings, Thursday evenings, Friday nights and Saturday nights, but a costumer could come in at any second. Now please leave me alone while I try to do my job!"
Once Isabella saw Shimizu, her mood quickly changed.
"Oh, hello, are you Beval's friend?" Isabella asked Shimizu with such interest.
"Yes, umm, my name is Shimizu Hada, I met Beval and his other friends today at coach class" he said in a polite manner.
"That's great! How old are you?"
"I am fourteen years old? You?"
"Aww you're the same age as Beval and his friends so you must be a freshman as well. I'm nineteen, and I just started my sophomore year at the University of San Francisco."
"Really? What are you majoring in?" Shimizu asked in interest.
"Biology, I want to be a biology teacher. I want to teach at Jefferson high. It's a pretty good sch-"
"You mean that high school that's filled with spoiled, rich, snobbish kids?" I asked rhetorically interrupting their conversation.
"I rather teach at a school that's filled with rich, snobbish kids than those trouble making, thugs from Davidson High" Isabella said to me as she gave me the side eye.
"Davidson high isn't even all that bad, you're exaggerating. It was probably bad for you when you went there, but it's not for me."
"Yet nobody hangs out with you but Shimizu, Robin and Gaia" Isabella snapped back passive aggressively.
"That's just the life of a kid who was experimented on sis. Not everybody is going to like you. People may fear you, but you still move through life knowing that there are people who do like you and will support you no matter what. They will support you, no matter your flaws, your struggles, your powers or your highs and lows. The people who stick with you through thick and thin is who you should keep in your life" I said, pretending to be a motivational speaker.
"Awww that was so sweet" Isabella responded, putting her hands on her heart as she shook her head and smiled. I was pretty sure she was being sarcastic.
"But I'm afraid there's no one in your life that's like that. You might end up being lonely for the rest of your life. No friends. No boyfriend" I shrugged. "Sorry."
"Ugh....you little! Just you wait until I get off! Just you wait! I'm gonna make you wish you were never born! And in case you didn't know, I have Thomas (Gaia's older brother) as a close friend of mine. Even though he lives at college and I don't, and goes to a completely different college then I do, he's still a close friend of mine."
"Mhm, tell me about it" I responded with a mixture of sarcasm and boredom as I rolled my eyes. I rested my head on my hand on the host stand.
She kept rambling on.
"I also have a few people on the Cross Country running team that I consider my friends. I don't need a boyfriend to make me happy for your information!"
"There there, it's gonna be alright. I know what it's like to be lonely" I responded, completely ignoring everything she said as I patted her shoulder.
She looked at my hand then looked back up at me. I swear she looked like she was ready to bite my hand off.
Shimizu interrupted our sibling rivalry with a question.
"If you don't mind me asking, how come you don't want to teach at Davidson High?"
There was a pause from Isabella for a moment, then her eye started to twitch. That's when I thought "oh god, here we go".
"Let's just say I'm not fond of people at that school, mainly because of a history of bullying when I went there" Isabella said as she tried to smile it off.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, because of my powers I'm not really liked either" Shimizu said trying to cheer her up.
"I could tell from your eyes you're an experi-baby", Isabella claimed.
"A what?"
"An experi-baby is a nickname Gaia and Isabella gave to people who were experimented on. Example: you and me," I explained to Shimizu.
"Oh, well, then I'll start using that term too. It's much better than the term "experimented person"."
"What power can you control if you mind me asking?", Isabella asked in curiosity.
"Water."
Isabella's eyes lit up.
"Oh wow, you're the missing piece to the four elements!"
"Huh?"
"I control air, Robin controls fire, Gaia controls earth and you control water, we make up the main four elements of the world" I whispered to him.
"Is that important or something?" he asked me.
"No, not really, we were just....well...incomplete without water, if that's how I should put it."
"Oh."
He looked at Isabella.
"Well, yes, yes I am the missing piece, I guess" Shimizu chuckled as he scratched the back of his head.
About a few seconds later, my mom and dad (Martha and Julio Garcia-Hernandez) came over to see what was going on. My dad could speak both English and Spanish, but my mom could mainly speak Spanish with some English.
My mom was forty-one years old and 5'9 in height, just like Isabella. Her skin tone was olive. Her hair was long, straight and dark brown. They were placed in two French braids that lead to a low bun with a pink ribbon wrapped around it.
Her eyebrows were thick like mine, but facially, Isabella favored her. She had on the resturant's apron, so I could tell she just came from the kitchen.
I favored my dad in facial features. My dad was forty-three years old. His skin was light brown, his hair was cut short and jelled down. He was a bit overweight with a bit of a beer gut. His mustache covered his upper lip a little and his eye brows were thin. He was wearing an apron along with my mom.
"Hola Beval, quién es este jovencito?" my mom asked. Translation:
(Hello Beval, who is this young man?)
"Este es mi nuevo amigo. Lo conoci hoy en la clase de entrenador" I said to my mom. Translation:
(This is my new friend. I met him today at coach class)
"What is your name?" my dad asked kindly as he held out his hand.
"Shimizu Hada" Shimizu smiled as he shook my dad's hand.
"Su nombre es Shimizu Hada" my dad told my mom. Translation:
(His name is Shimizu Hada)
"Oh, nice name" my mom said in English with a smile.
My mom and dad were very curious about Shimizu. I told them that he was an experi-baby just liked me, Gaia, and Robin, and that he could control water.
They were both fascinated by him and offered him tortillas for him to share with me and the others.
Shimizu waved my parents and older sister goodbye and we both walked out of the restaurant. Gaia and Robin were still there, but this time they were sitting on my steps waiting for me and Shimizu.
"What took you so damn long?! It's been thirty minutes and I'm starving, plus it's like eighty degrees out here!" Robin ranted as she approached us.
"First off Red Robin, I was introducing him to my sister and parents, if you were so hot, then why didn't you come into the restaurant to take a break from the heat. We offer courtesy cups. But speaking of heat, we are at the end of September, it is not that hot."
After I said that, I pulled out my phone to check the weather.
"According to the weather, it's not eighty degrees, it's actually seventy-four degrees, pretty high for late September in San Francisco huh?"
"Ooh, you just got served" Gaia teased at Robin.
Robin always hated it when I called her "Red Robin".
She started growling at me but quickly stopped when she saw that Shimizu was holding a bowl of tortillas.
"Do you still hate me?" I asked Robin while smirking.
She looked at me, rolled her eyes and smiled.
"No" she chuckled.
"Alright, how about a movie with these cheesy tortillas. I got dibs on this horror movie called "The Midnight Man" I suggested.
"Yeah!" Gaia and Robin shouted.
"Sure, I always wanted to see that movie, but I never really got a chance to"Shimizu explained.
"Well, this is your lucky day"I winked.
I used my keys to unlock the door of the house. After we got in, I closed the door, locked it and we all ran upstairs to my room.
