note: this is an example of what's called a "boxing match script" in screenplay writing. essentially, the script writer is attempting to portray a scenario where the characters are in disagreement about something. it's meant to be like a boxing match, where the words and actions are the blows. there does not have to be a literal boxing match.

it's also good to keep the dialogue going, but not as a sacrifice for action. adding subtle things in active voice like "she huffs and crosses her arms" or "she turns and wipes her tears" is helpful to establish the mood of the scene and bring emotions to life through body language.

it was the third of four scripts i had to write in my fall 2020 intro to screenplay writing course. it was supposed to be a partner assignment, but all my partner did was come up with the idea of two guys having some argument using peer pressure. i came up with the following script, wrote the entire thing, and turned it in with just my name because i was tired of, as my professor called it, "saving [his] ass." it was an awkward feeling, but in the end it was dope.

FADE IN:

INT. SCHOOL FIRST FLOOR HALLWAY – DAY

RANDOM STUDENTS walk toward their lockers and talk in small cliques.

LUKE FLEMINGS, 17, sighs and drops his shoulders as he opens his locker. Luke's friend, DARRYL LEWIS, 19, jogs up to him. He grins.

DARRYL LEWIS

Yo Luke! Did you think about what I said earlier?

Luke rolls his eyes and grabs the books he needs from his locker. He places them into his backpack.

LUKE FLEMINGS

I thought we were done talking about this.

Darryl leans against a neighboring locker. Luke shuts his own, facing him.

DARRYL LEWIS

I didn't like your answer the first time, so I thought I'd ask again.

Luke blinks, stone-faced.

DARRYL LEWIS

Don't you at least think it'd be fun? I mean, come on- we're seniors!

Luke throws his backpack over his right shoulder and walks in the direction of the school's entrance.

DARRYL LEWIS

Hey, wait up! C'mon, man!

Luke speed walks and dodges Random Students he passes. Darryl sidesteps Random Students and catches up to Luke.

LUKE FLEMINGS

Leave me alone, Darryl. I already told you I don't want to do it.

EXT. SCHOOL ENTRANCE STEPS – DAY

Random Students loiter and lean against the steps' railings. Luke and Darryl walk past them and stop at the bottom.

LUKE FLEMINGS

I'm serious Darryl; I'm tired of you asking me this. It's annoying. Ask someone else.

DARRYL LEWIS

Yeah, but weren't you the one complaining about how stressed you were and how you needed to relax? This is the perfect solution!

Luke side-eyes him and shakes his head.

LUKE FLEMINGS

I can literally think of ten better ways to reduce stress.

Darryl shrugs. Luke walks away and Darryl follows.

EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT – DAY

Luke walks up to his Toyota Camry and unlocks it. Darryl follows, crosses his arms, and juts his chin.

DARRYL LEWIS

My way is better.

Luke throws his backpack into his car's backseat and turns, fingertips on his temples.

LUKE FLEMINGS

Dude, seriously, could you shut the hell up? I didn't tell you I was stressed just so you could keep irritating me and make me feel worse!

Darryl stumbles backward and raises his eyebrows.

DARRYL LEWIS

I'm just tryna help you out!

LUKE FLEMINGS

Oh really, by trying to get me to temporarily drown out my sorrows with alcohol? Yeah, that makes sense!

Darryl rolls his eyes and places his hands on Luke's shoulders. He stands in front of him and stares him down.

DARRYL LEWIS

I'm just saying that you should drink with me. It'd make you feel great and help you reduce your stress. Plus, we could go to the party this weekend! It'll be awesome!

Luke shakes him off and steps back. He glares at Darryl.

LUKE FLEMINGS

Dude, I've told you a million times that I'm not interested in drinking! It's not even legal for me and my parents would kill me. Plus, I just don't want to.

Darryl sighs and kicks gravel.

DARRYL LEWIS

You're making a mistake. It'd be really fun. All we've gotta do is go buy some al-

LUKE FLEMINGS

You've peer pressured me into enough stuff over the years! I'm telling you the answer is no, and that's that. If you wanna go drink, do it with someone else that isn't me.

Luke hops into his car and closes the door. He starts it and drives off. Darryl stares after him.

FADE OUT:

THE END

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

this quote is perfect and pretty much sums it up. he really dropped the mic on this one:

❝ i'm not in this world to live up to your expectations and you're not in this world to live up to mine. ❞ - bruce lee

be yourself, mah dudes. i love you either way. don't let people peer pressure you into doing things you really aren't comfortable with doing and don't want to do. but don't be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone. it can change, you know ;)

idea:

⋆ probably written on september 28, 2020/posted on may 28, 2021. what a coinkydink that the number 28 is there twice :)

⋆ i had written this script last minute and was feeling really sick, so i was extremely scared that it wouldn't make sense, especially since i had written it without any help and a lack of sleep. i still showed up via zoom though. the rule was that other classmates served as the narrator + actors of other people's scripts.

⋆ when my classmates read mine, everyone was kinda stunned. my professor said it was really clean and straightforward. exactly what a boxing match was meant to be. my classmates couldn't find any criticism to give me other than nice praise and one guy even asked me to send it to him so that he could look at for an example of a good script. though i felt sick and had been scared that it turned out horrible since i didn't even check much for spelling and grammar errors (btw there weren't any), this outcome really made me feel better.
