A loose rein binds stronger
Robin, ever since he discovered where she lived, began his pursuit. After work, he would rush out of the company. Bon, still skeptical of Robin's promise to quit gambling, even followed him to the parking lot, demanding answers.
"You're not going to gamble again, are you?"
Hearing someone whisper behind him, Robin felt a chill down his spine. Turning around, he saw Bon standing there, making him jump.
With a sigh, Robin replied, "I told you, I quit. Stop worrying!"
"Are you sure?"
"Of course! You're acting like my mom. Can you just drop it?"
"Then where are you going?" Bon pressed further.
"I... I'm going to eat."
"Eat? You usually eat at home with a private chef. Why are you suddenly going out to eat? With a client?"
"Uh... yeah."
"You're lying. Look me in the eye."
"I'm going out for food... stop being so stubborn." Robin locked eyes with Bon as he answered.
Bon studied Robin's expression. He didn't seem to be lying.
"Okay... I'll believe you for now."
"Even if you don't, what can you do about it?"
Bon was about to retort when Robin started his car and sped off, leaving a trail of smoke, making Bon cough in frustration.
Robin drove to Sapphire's restaurant. He examined the signboard and the house carefully before stepping inside, ensuring he was in the right place.
As soon as he entered, he heard her voice greeting him:
"Welcome!"
He smiled slightly. She immediately recognized him.
"How... how did you find this place?"
"I was just passing by, got hungry, and decided to stop in. I didn't expect to run into you. I thought you had forgotten me already!"
"How could I forget... So that's how it is. Please, have a seat."
She quickly accepted his rather unconvincing excuse.
Robin chose a seat near the kitchen, where he could see her clearly. He had found something more valuable than all the temptations in the world.
She brought out his order—chicken rice—along with a plate of salmon salad. Surprised, he asked:
"I don't remember ordering this salad."
"It's my way of saying thanks for what you did the other day. Please, enjoy."
She smiled softly. Even though it was just a faint smile, it captivated him, making him freeze for a few seconds.
"What's your name? So I can call you properly. This place is close to my company, so I might stop by often."
She hesitated for a moment before replying.
"I... am Sapphire."
"Sapphire, huh? That's a beautiful name."
"Thank you."
The conversation suddenly turned awkward. Robin deliberately ate slowly to extend his time watching her.
After finishing his meal, Sapphire even came to see him off.
"Thank you for visiting!"
Robin replied, "I should be the one thanking you for the meal. Your food is delicious. I'll definitely come again."
"Thank you."
From that day on, Robin had people gather information about her. Eventually, he learned that Sapphire had married that man five years ago. At first, the man had been an IT employee with a stable income, leading Sapphire to quit her office job to take care of him and become a full-time housewife.
A year after their marriage, she opened this restaurant, while her husband, over the years, fell into gambling and addiction due to work stress. His salary—and even the money Sapphire earned—was all wasted on gambling, forcing her to both repay his debts and cover household expenses. They had no children.
Hearing this, Robin pondered for a while and then asked his assistant, Jacob
"Does that guy still have a job?"
"Right now, Sapphire's husband is unemployed, sir," Jacob replied.
Robin thought deeply, calculating something, then said, "I see. You may leave."
Perhaps everything should start with that useless, disgusting man.
Robin went to Sapphire's restaurant every day. Instead of going alone—risking an awkward atmosphere and making Sapphire uncomfortable—he brought along his colleagues.
Robin loved watching Sapphire work. She was always enthusiastic and never showed a bad attitude toward customers. Sometimes, he got so caught up in watching her that he spaced out and forgot to eat, forcing his colleagues to nudge him. Occasionally, when Robin was at the restaurant, he would see Sapphire's drunk husband stumbling inside, which made him extremely uncomfortable.
Then, one day, he decided to play the "soft approach, firm grip" strategy. This tactic was old but effective—he stopped going to the restaurant altogether. Instead, only his assistant visited.
This went on for a whole week. Robin disappeared.
That was when Sapphire started to notice. She found herself wondering why he hadn't come. "Did the food lose its taste?"
She began thinking about him.
As she was lost in thought, her husband suddenly started slamming tables and chairs, throwing the whole restaurant into chaos. The customers, startled by the scene, quickly left. He yelled at her and shoved a piece of paper in her face.
"What the hell is this? A divorce paper? How many times have you tried this already?"
Sapphire, unfazed by his reaction, calmly tied her apron and said, "If you sign, we can divorce peacefully. Don't make me expose all the evidence of your abuse."
His face twisted in rage. He grabbed a three-legged chair beside him, about to hurl it at her.
Just then, Robin's assistant appeared, snatching the chair from his grasp. "If you do that, I'll call the police."
"Who the hell are you? You want me to punch you too?"
He swung his fist, but the assistant swiftly twisted his arm behind his back, making him cry out in pain.
"You should learn how to be a real man."
"You... you... arghhh!" he screamed.
The assistant let go, causing him to clutch his arm in pain. Yet, he still managed to stand up and sneer at Sapphire.
"Just wait. You dare look down on me? When I make a fortune, don't come crawling back!"
Sapphire ignored his nonsense and continued preparing food. Robin's assistant gave her a polite nod before leaving, and Sapphire made sure to thank him.
Her husband staggered outside, looking for a gambling den to vent his anger.
As he stumbled around, he noticed a pile of flyers scattered in front of their house. Curious, he picked one up and read it.
Whatever was written inside made him burst into laughter.
"Hahaha! The heavens are finally on my side! My prayers have been answered!"
Little did he know, he had just walked into the trap Robin had set for him—the flyer was a recruitment ad for Robin's company, BB Corporation.
