"With this storm coming in, my chances of getting into this qualifying course are becoming low." Nani groaned loudly against her pillow, the thunderstorm roared outside her window, the girl just laid on her bed a few minutes until she couldn't handle it.
She closed the curtains of her room and took her ukelele from the corner, passing her fingers through the strings, playing a few notes randomly. Haunani liked the rain, she really did, but when nature decided to mess with her training, well she hates it with every cell in her body. Feeling the stress of not being able to do something made Haunani leave her ukulele alone, trying her best to distract herself with something else, she paced around her room, and finally decided to leave, heading to the kitchen.
"Hey, Dad, anything new happening outside the storm?" Haunani jumped up on the kitchen island, her feet dangling as she saw her father cleaning up their kitchen area.
"Well, from what words spreading at work, Ward has been doing some research about an old tale from this island, a children's story of the Royal Merchant, who knows why but, something important went down." Marcus Kahale worked in the Cameron Development, his boss would change from Ward to Rose but still, both of his bosses were very secretive.
"Do you know what the Royal Merchant is?" Nani asked curiously about it. A children's tale that one of the richest men on the island is looking for? Well, it seemed something interesting.
"Well, I asked around and some of my co-workers said it was an English ship that got lost at sea, and it had gold inside of it, they haven't found it but, people want that gold, imagine how much simpler life could be." Marcus explained, stopping his actions to place full attention on Nani.
"But why would Ward need that gold? He's extremely rich, like, disgustingly rich, unless he plans to do something with it." The last sentence made Nani chuckle, she knew how the Cameron's were, they would just give their money away, they were too shallow to do so.
"I have no idea, I am just a shipment guy, if I do get to hear something else about it, I'll make sure to tell you first." Marcus dropped the kitchen towel, walking over to Nani he crossed his arms. "Now, get off the island, and get things inside, any second now the storm will get uglier and we want the least possible damage." With that being said, the teenager hopped off, her feet dragged behind her as she headed over to the backyard, picking up a few hardware, chairs, and more home objects that should've been inside.
When night time came around the storm took over, vanishing most of the island's electricity, and when that occurred, the Kahale family had a backup plan, some lanterns, and candles around their home, just enough for those who stayed up to continue their work.
"Holy shit." Nani whispered when she opened her curtains the next day and saw the muddy mess outside her window. Jumping out of bed, Nani walked outside, putting on her sneakers, she looked around, noticing how pieces of trees had been taken apart and flown to the backyard, and how pieces of its leaves had fallen, this mess had to be quickly cleaned up.
"Looks like Agatha made a mess huh?" Okelani walked outside, standing beside her daughter with a cup of coffee in hand. "We'll take care of this Nani, you should go to work and help out Heyward, I'm pretty sure he will be needing the extra pair of hands."
"I mean, I think I have this day off but are you sure about it mom? You don't need help here?" Nani turned to face her mother, only to notice her shake her head at her. "Okay, I'll go and help Heyward out, if he doesn't need my help, I'll come back, okay?" Nani lowered her head a bit glancing at her mother.
Nani headed back inside her home, changing from her pj's to her clothes, picking up some jean shorts and a simple olive green shirt. Nani had to be prepared if she came back to continue her training, wearing her bikini underneath the clothing, picking her backpack to stuff it with her wallet, phone and other belongings.
Taking her bike with her, Nani headed over to Heyward's, she greeted some people she knew and saw the mess the hurricane had caused to homes and work areas, Agatha and her power didn't care about anything, but Nani didn't blame Mother Nature, she always knew that nature had to clean herself from everything humans caused behind them, but of course, her heart sunk whenever she heard the terrible news people from the island had to go through.
"Nani, miss Nani." the screams of guys got her attention, squinting her eyes Nani looked at the island, noticing a boat with the three guys she least expected to see just having a free day.
"What are you guys doing?" Nani took the brake of her bike and shouted back at the guys.
"We're going to the marsh, come with us to pick up some food." John B shouted back behind the wheel. The invitation was confusing to Nani, well, it wasn't the invitation especially, but the way Pope was with them instead of being with his father.
"I'm sorry, I got work—"
"I called in sick for you, I told my pops you weren't feeling okay the day before." Pope answered, interrupting Nani. The surprise her face showed was mixed with just a tiny bit of anger, the extra money was now gone.
"Just leave your bike at the smoothie shop and come with us, move it, Nani!" JJ waved at the brunette. "Mr. Terrance, you wouldn't mind looking after Haunani's bike would you?"
"Not at all, anything for the future surfer champion." Mr. Terrance smiled, with hands stretched ready to take the bike into safety. "Jackson told me about it, the island is pretty excited about it." Nani's eyes widened when he mentioned the island, boy, how fast did the word spread.
"Thank you, Mr. Terrance, I'll come by the afternoon to pick it up." Nani added, leaving her transportation behind to head at the edge.
"Come on, be careful not to slip." Pope grabbed her hand helping her get into the boat. Nani's heart picked up by the warm touch of Pope mixing perfectly with the coldness of her hand.
"Now we gotta pick Kie and the gang is ready." Nani sat down beside Pope and listened to John B's words. Taking control, John B sailed towards the rich side of the island, doing a comparison of the chaos, it appeared Agatha played favorites, it wasn't that much of a mess around the Figure Eight side, making Nani a little bit jealous about it.
"Top of the mornin' to ya." John B said, leaning close to the edge, JJ was kind enough to help Kiara into the boat.
"Good Morning." Kiara answered taking in JJ's hand getting into the boat.
"You got us some juice boxes?" Pope asked noticing the small cooler in Kiara's hand.
"You know, just some yogurts and carrot sticks."
"How about my kind of juice box?" With that question and Kiara's answer, Nani knew that beer was hidden safely in that red cooler, a smile forming on her face by the thought of the alcoholic drink. Everyone grabbed their bottle of beer, as the boat sailed away towards the marsh, music was played on the speaker, the voice of Bob Marley playing happily and loudly, the ambiance within the group changed into joy.
"No there's no way that could even happen." Nani laughed, leaning her head back as she let her laughter be heard loudly. Their talk had changed to Nani's competition, JJ proposed the insane idea of her trying tricks while being up on the surfboard, tricks that only JJ has done and ended up badly.
"Really, well, I got something that you should add to the routine." JJ took another bottle of beer. "A party trick." He said walking over to the front corner of the boat. "Hey, Pope. Can you go a little faster?" he asked, balancing himself.
"Are you serious about that JJ?" Nani asked, looking at the blond, she noticed how everyone scooted away, taking a place of safety.
"I got this, it's gonna work." JJ ignored everyone's comments about how it wouldn't work, Pope just listened to him, the boat picking up speed, JJ lifted his drink, the drops of beer flying back, droplets of the alcohol hitting her face and hair.
"You're getting beer in my hair." Kiara exclaimed trying her best to cover her face.
"All right, all right, that's enough." Pope shouted out calling out for JJ, but the blond didn't listen to his friends.
An abrupt stop send everyone flying forward off their seats, as for JJ he was sent off the boat flown away towards the water, everyone groaned in pain due to the impact, managed to stand up, and check if everyone was okay.
"What the hell was that?" Nani asked, massaging her leg, the spot she had banged against the boat.
"You okay, JJ?" Nani and Pope shouted out, leaning forward to see the blond floating on his back.
"I think the heels touched the back of my head." He groaned letting his body relax a little bit. Everyone asked how the rest were doing, and when no negative answer has given, new worries and questions surged.
"Pope, what did you do?" JJ asked swimming towards the boat.
"Sandbar. The channel changed." Pope answered and walked towards the edge.
"This is gonna mess the whole thing up." John B exhaled and tried to think of a solution.
"Well, there goes our peace and calming day, right?" Nani stretched her back, hearing the small crack of a bone as it returned to a relaxing station.
"I saved the beer though." JJ added, the sarcastic comment was even answered with a sarcastic one from John B.
"You good Kie? like are you sure?" Nani asked her friend, seeing how she kept on touching her ribs area.
"Yeah, I'm cool, you?"
"Yeah, totally fine here." Looking down, Nani knew a bruise would start to form on her right leg due to the impact, and an excuse had to be made.
"Guys, I think there's a boat down there." Pope said unsure, he kept on looking down at the water, everyone didn't believe what he was saying, a boat? Over here? "No, no, guys. I'm serious. There's a boat down there." Taking a peek over the boat, Nani could see a dark and big silhouette down at the water.
"Oh, he's not kidding at all." Nani turned around taking off her jeans and shirt, the navy blue bikini darkening when her body entered the water, following along with her friends deeper into the lake.
"You think there's a dead body down there?" Pope asked, the idea hadn't occurred to Nani about the possibility of that happening.
"Come on Pope, hurry up, you have to be an accomplice if we do find a body." The brunette said before diving deep into the waters, the Pogues looked at the boat, it wasn't a fishing type like theirs, it looked expensive, returning to the surface, all pogues looked at each other happily, excited, unsure of what they saw was real.
"That's a Grady White, a new one of those is like 500 Gs, easy." JJ explained as the five of them swam back to their own little boat.
"Holy cow, but how did that get there?" Nani asked lifting herself inside and sat down.
"No idea, but that's the boat I saw when I surfed the surge." John B said. Surfing the surge? That's extremely dangerous —-and kinda cool— even for Nani to do, and Kiara agreed on it.
"Do we know whose boat that is?"
John B opened a small compartment from their boat pulling out an anchor, whatever he was planning was stupid, Nani looked at the guys confused on how the hell were they still alive with such ideas.
"Oh that's nice JJ, push him off." Nani said sarcastically at the blond. Her friend instead just answered that it was the easiest and fastest way. "Really, you said you wouldn't but if John B needs mouth to mouth, you will do it."
It had been seconds already and John B hadn't resurfaced, the pogues leaned to the edge of the boat looking around trying to get some kind of hint that their friend hadn't choked or something. As if he had know the desperation from the group John B appeared with a motel key on his hand, thank god it wasn't dead bodies like Pope asked, sadly nothing with potential like JJ questioned.
"And why would we want a motel key?" Nani asked looking around seeing John B getting helped into the boat again.
"We should report the wreck to the coast guard, maybe we'll get a finder's fee." Kiara was the only one making sense right now, Nani seconded the idea, and it seemed like the guys had no other choice but to follow their orders.
With Pope back behind the wheel, he navigated toward the island. The sun was just perfect for some surf sessions, and maybe—just maybe—Nani could escape the whole situation with her friends and catch some waves. But she was also curious about the owner of the Grady White, and she hoped there'd be a finder's fee for it.
