1 - The Day The World Changes
A/N: Here is the first chapter for the story hope you enjoy it! The gif is made by me I'm still new on making them. The story does take place in season 2 and the story will have some flashbacks related to season 1.
As Jean and her younger brother Neal gathered with their family to celebrate their grandparents' anniversary, their loyal dog Zeus stayed close by. In the living room, their older siblings, Zachary and Lexi, enjoyed a lively game with their older cousins, absorbed in a virtual world. Meanwhile, Jean and Neal ventured into the backyard, where they engaged in spirited play with Zeus, tossing a bright red ball.
Jean happened to glance at her watch, noticing the time read 11:11 AM. She looked up just in time to see Neal launch the ball across the yard, causing Zeus to dash after it with uncontainable excitement. With a sigh, Jean shifted her gaze downward, getting ready for lunch, and called out to her brother and their energetic dog, urging them to return to the house and join the rest of the family.
Unbeknownst to them, this would mark the last moment they spent in the carefree embrace of their loved ones for the next five long years. Once inside, Zeus trotted in eagerly, heading straight for his food bowl without a second thought. Jean announced their arrival, expecting a response, but the silence that followed felt peculiar.
“Guys!” she shouted, but the absence of any reply only deepened her concern. She arched an eyebrow, her instincts telling her something wasn't right.
Neal roamed through the house, his unease mounting. Closing the back door behind her and securing it, Jean listened to her brother's words. “I can’t find anyone. Zach, Lexi, our cousins, no sign of them at all.” His voice quivered with anxiety.
Reflecting on their history, Jean wondered aloud, “Could this be one of their pranks?” Despite the playful nature of their older siblings, doubt began to creep in.
Jean approached her brother with an expression of concern etched on her face, resting her hand gently on his shoulder. Her voice trembled slightly as she asked if he was alright.
Neal sighed, anxiety flickering in his eyes. He shook his head, conveying the gravity of the situation. There was an unsettling feeling gnawing at him, and he insisted that they needed to uncover what was truly happening.
Determined, Jean suggested reaching out to their friends for any insights, but she emphasized the importance of preparing for the worst. She watched as Neal dashed to his room, grabbing a bag and beginning to fill it with essentials.
Feeling the urgency too, Jean ventured to her own room. She quickly located her backpack, methodically selecting clothing and vital items to take with her. Before long, within about half an hour, she found herself drawn to her nightstand, where a photo book lay, filled with cherished memories of her family over the years.
Sitting on her bed, she opened it, her eyes lingering on a snapshot from a birthday picnic in the park, captured with smiles all around. Heartfelt words escaped her lips, a promise whispered into the quiet of the room. She reassured the images within the pages that everything would turn out fine, and held onto the hope of reuniting with them. Though deep down she knew they couldn’t hear her, a part of her felt connected to those memories, her hand resting lovingly on the photograph.
After a moment of reflection, Jean closed the book and placed it into her bag. Her gaze then landed on her notebook, and an idea struck. With a pen in hand, she began to compose a heartfelt letter to her parents and siblings. She poured out her thoughts about their quest to find a way to bring them back, assuring them that they would be safe as they navigated the challenges the world has to offer to them. And that when her family comes back she hopes that they would see the letter.
With her backpack slung over her shoulders, Jean stepped out of her room, glancing back one last time before turning to descend the stairs. As she reached the bottom, she encountered her brother Neal, who was also equipped for their journey. His skateboard dangled from the side of his pack, and he held onto a leash connected to their dog, Zeus, who tilted his head in confusion.
“Are you ready?” Jean inquired, receiving a nod from Neal. He expertly fastened the leash onto Zeus’s collar, who was clearly eager for adventure. “Absolutely. We’re all set,” Neal replied, gripping the leash securely.
“Okay then, let's uncover what lies ahead,” Jean declared, walking towards the front door with keys in hand, while Neal and Zeus trailed closely behind.
Casting a glance back at her home, she felt a flicker of doubt, wishing fervently that everything was merely a figment of her imagination. The reality was stark and unyielding, forcing her to steady her breathing. With a decisive action, she locked the door behind her, sealing away the past.
A year had passed since the adults mysteriously disappeared. Whispers of speculation surrounded their fate; a botched experiment involving the Sparticle project was said to have cast everyone over the age of fifteen into a parallel dimension.
Now, in the shade of a dense forest, Jean found herself captivated by a bird perched on a branch, her thoughts drifting back to that fateful day when everything changed. As the bird took flight into the vast sky, she gripped her bow and arrow, her gaze shifting to a pair of deer grazing a distance away. Steeling herself, she prepared to take aim, feeling the weight of her resolve. Just then, a baby deer approached its mother, instantly compelling Jean to lower her weapon, compassion overtaking her impulse to hunt.
Slipping the bow around her neck, she hoisted her bag from the ground and began to walk away, making her way back to the camp her brother, Neal, and she were currently calling home.
The camp belonged to the Sparticle tribe, a group they had encountered while fleeing the troublesome Fizzy’s gang. In their time with the tribe, they learned of an ambitious plan to retrieve the missing adults from the parallel world. It became evident that Neal was not the only one gifted with extraordinary abilities—Reese possessed powers too, and together, they held a glimmer of hope for reversing their grim reality.
As Jean strolled through the woods, her mind wandered back to thoughts of her family, trapped in that other world. Longing to see them just once more consumed her thoughts. Regrets surfaced, particularly the nagging feeling that she should have been with her family inside their home instead of outside enjoying the backyard. But then again, the consequences of a different choice remained a mystery.
Pausing for a moment, she observed the tribe engaged in preparations for the evening. Her eyes landed on Neal, who was diligently practicing his abilities under Reese's guidance. Intrigued, she made her way over, eager to see what he had accomplished in her absence.
