The Donut Shop

HurricaneKareena

I am soooo sorry this came so late. I have no excuses.

1. My opinions on the title, cover and blurb:

Title is clear and concise, though a little boring. I feel like you could add a bit more pizzazz into it, maybe some wordplay or more about the bakery or something related to Ethan.

The cover gives off rainbowwww vibes, which fits with the story. I'm not sure if the textures in the background are supposed to be silk or something, but for some reason I got reminded of Scream. The model of the guy looks pretty chill, pretty normal, but the hair... I'm sorry, I have two classmates with that hairstyle, not really a fan of it.

The blurb starts off great, introducing the problem which is the closing of Sol Bakery. I'm going off topic here, but man there are wayyyy too many people named Chen in my life, myself included. Okay, back on track, I feel like it would have made things smoother if that student council president's name was mentioned. And the third paragraph of the blurb just chucked a ton of random stuff at me that seemed unrelated to the goal of saving the bakery? I'd suggest lengthening the blurb, clueing the reader in on more of the obstacles instead of listing them at the last sentence of the blurb.

2. What I understood from the story so far:

I read up till part three, and a little of part four.

The first part I read introduced us to Ethan and Tweed, plus Mrs. Heifenmeir's legendary pastries. It's short, but sweet (in more ways than one) and works to show how the bakery is a pretty big part of their lives.

Tweed and Ethan do a titration lab together, and we're introduced to their teacher Mr. Feld. Somehow Ethan messes up the lab, and then everyone is forced to have class outside. Then the duo happily go to their usual hangout spot, only to discover that the bakery is closed, and it is NEVER closed.

Mrs. Heifenmeir bids goodbye to the boys, much to their dismay. Ethan comes up with the idea of fundraising, but it doesn't work out.

Without Sol Bakery as their studying hub, Tweed scores the very first B in his life. They decide to bring the matter to the student council's attention, which is unfortunately helmed by Tweed's greatest nemesis Mara, so that doesn't go very well either. Tweed then suggests they check out Red's Doughnuts, Sol Bakery's apparent replacement.

3. What I thought of the characters:

I feel like it's a cute little quirk how Ethan hates Tuesdays. I personally love Thursdays, and I think Sundays can come off as a little too sunny sometimes. Ethan's penchant for disaster honestly reminds me of myself (I've broken a few lab apparatuses and shed blood during experiments when I was in high school) and I love this soooo much OMGGGG. I admire Ethan's instant determination to save Sol Bakery, even though Tweed didn't come off as very on-board with it at first.

Tweed really surprised me with his whole walking-out-of-the-class thing, like if I tried that I would legit be crucified by both my teachers and parents, good grades be damned. And this is coming from someone who was notorious for sleeping in almost every class. Also him scoring his first B just stabbed me right in the gut like I remember when I CRIED when I got my first B even though everyone was like bro it's okay, people get Bs.

I like the dynamic between Ethan and Tweed, the extrovert-introvert, the prepared and unprepared, misfits together.

Mara came off a bit too cruelly harsh towards the boys, telling Ethan that nobody cares about his beloved bakery closing down, but I guess kids can be mean at that age too. Like, I get that the student council has their hands full with a bunch of stuff, but chill girl.

4. Nitpicks and personal opinions (this will include spelling and grammar):

I didn't notice any spelling and grammar errors in the story, so yay for that.

OOOO can I just say, I LOVED how the first letter of each chapter title ended up spelling 'DONUTS ARE WORTH FIGHTING FOR TOGETHER'.

I feel like Ethan's reaction to Sol Bakery closing down was a tad dramatic, but hey, who isn't dramatic at that age?

As a whole, the story reminded me of books I used to read in primary school, where teenagers act like real kids and go on fun adventures and hilarious hijinks. It was such a fresh breath of air from the angsty emotional teenage stories commonly found on this website. I'd probably read more if I didn't have to rush through my review list before my degree program starts in october BECAUSE I PROCRASTINATED.

Congratulations on being featured in YA's Clueless Reading List! I'm so sorry I couldn't help much in terms of giving constructive criticism, I feel like I was very gushy here. Wishing you all the best with editing!
