Chapter 4
A few hours later, after school had let out, the group of four spent a little while in the library to work on their project. Though they were pretty productive at first, though after Tommy and Purpled met up with them, they didn't really get much done, with the six of them (Mostly Quackity) cracking jokes, and laughing loudly (That was mostly Tommy), annoying the librarians to no end. Ranboo had pretty much been adopted immediately by the others, and he fit right in, laughing and even cracking a few jokes on his own. Toby was glad he got along with everyone else. He really seemed like a nice guy. Unlike the librarians, who always seemed to be giving them the stink eye. They were a pair of old ladies who had to be twins, and had long since given up on shushing them, though that didn't stop them from sending glares their way.
Soon, they were off to the park. It was later in the day, and there were a few parents with their children, and college students milling around, but it wasn't very crowded. Toby laughed as Quackity, Karl, and Purpled were messing around with each other, Tommy laughing at the three of them. Ranboo stayed back with Toby, watching the other four with a smile himself. He glanced down at the smaller boy.
"Hey, Toby?"
"Yeah Ranboo?"
"Thanks...for everything today." he smiled down at him, "Being the new kid is hard enough, but you sort of...took me under your wing, you know? You and Tommy...and it made it so much easier to adjust and stuff with friends...so uh, thank you.."
He chuckled sheepishly, and Toby smiled up at him
"God, that sounded cheesy, didn't it?"
"A little bit, but it's ok" Toby grinned, "And you don't need to be sorry man, you seem like a good guy...I'm happy to call you a friend!"
"Now you're being cheesy..." Ranboo chuckled, "Come on, we better catch up with the others before they hurt themselves, I'm pretty sure you're like- fifty percent of their impulse control"
Toby laughed, "Maybe- Let's go!"
The two of them jogged to catch up with the others, and the joking and laughing resumed. Though after a little bit, Toby noticed a small group of college students nearby their group of friends. They looked around Wilbur and Techno's age, and one of them looked very familiar. He and Niki's eyes met, and he held her gaze for a few seconds too long. Crap- He quickly looked away. Surely she wouldn't recognize him, right? He braved a quick glance back at her, and much to his horror, she was still looking in his direction, eyes wide with recognition. Well shit- She started towards him, and his heart skipped a beat. Oh no no no, Think fast Toby-
"Hey guys, uh- I'm not feeling great so I think I'm gonna head home alright?"
His friends looked at him, a bit concerned.
"You alright mate?" Tommy asked, "Want me to walk home with you?"
"Nah it's ok..It's just a headache really...andI don't want to spoil the fun for the rest of you...see you tomorrow, yeah?" Toby said, walking as he talked as Niki kept coming towards them.
The boys nodded, though Tommy and Ranboo still looked a little concerned, and Toby dashed off with a wave.
He made it home, panting a bit.
"That was too close..." he muttered to himself. He headed inside to grab a snack. Now that his mind wasn't racing and he wasn't panicking, he realized he did feel a headache coming on. Shoot-
His Mom poked her head in as he shut the fridge and sat at the table, "Hey Toby, everything ok?"
"Yeah, It's all good Mom, just got a headache.."
"Is Tommy still at the park with the other three?"
"Mhm..and a new kid we befriended named Ranboo! He's really tall, and friendly!"
"Yeah?" Kristin raised an eyebrow, moving over to sit by him
Toby nodded, and he talked as he snacked, his Mom listening and nodding.
After he was finished, the headache hadn't really gotten better, but it hadn't gotten worse either, which he was thankful for.
"Well, This Ranboo seems like a good kid, much like yourself" Kristin smiled, standing up, "I've got some errands to run, let me know if you need any medicine for that headache alright?"
"I will, thanks Mom" Toby nodded, smiling at her.
She hugged him, and then left. The rest of the day went smoothly, Tommy got home and checked on Toby (Though he was trying to not be obvious about it), then Wilbur got home from college, and Techno got home from a patrol (Techno had dropped out of college to do full time hero work), and Phil and Kristin made dinner, then later they all started to their rooms. Toby had a plan. Wait for Tommy to go to bed, then sneak out the window at the end of the hall. Easy peasy...probably. It was a school night, so he probably wouldn't be out too long, but he wanted to give this a try.
An hour or so later, he heard Tommy's soft breathing, and he slowly and quietly got out of bed. He grabbed his hoodie and bandana, donning a similar look to the night of the party. It wasn't an actual costume, but it was all he had at the moment, and it worked well enough. After stuffing a pillow under his covers, just in case (Hey, it worked well enough in the movies right?), he tiptoed out of the room, turning right as he exited. His and Tommy's room was at the end of the hall, with a window on then end. He quietly made his way, trying to open it with as little noise as possible. His heart and mind were racing as he succeeded and slipped out, leaving the window slightly open, but closing it most of the way. He hopped down to the ground. Thankfully their roof wasn't too high up, and he took a breath of fresh night air. He was doing this. He could do this. Let's do this... And with that, he ran towards the main city.
He mainly stuck to rooftops, not wanting to be seen unless necessary. The night seemed pretty peaceful. Granted it was a weekday, and he'd thought that the night of the party before the encounter with Schlatt... He suddenly heard store alarms nearby, and perked up, he made his way across a few roofs towards the sound, when he saw a man running in his direction, carrying a bag of what looked like a mismatched assortment of goods, nothing essential for living or any like that. Judging by the way he kept glancing over his shoulder and he was booking it in the opposite direction of the alarm, he guessed this was the thief. He wanted to make sure though. Adrenaline started to rush through him, like it had when he saved Niki. This was exciting! Also terrifying- Ok Toby you can do this. He quickly climbed down the fire escape of the building he was on, the man not noticing him as he approached. Toby cleared his throat, hopping down in front of the man. He stumbled when he hit the ground, but quickly recovered.
"Excuse me sir, but I don't think that belongs to you, does it?"
The man snarled at him, "Leave me alone kid, I don't have time to deal with hero wannabes in their pajamas, Go home-"
He moved, but Toby stepped in front of him again. His heart was pounding and he was freaking out internally just a little bit, but he did his best to stay calm on the outside.
"Either you can return them on, or-"
"Or what?" The man glared, getting right in his face. Toby stumbled backwards a bit, a pang of fear flashing through him, which made the man snicker.
"Leave playing hero for the adults who know what they're doing, kiddo" he smirked, starting to walk off, "You're most likely gonna get hurt, and if you get in my way again I'll be sure you do"
Toby took a breath- Come on big man, it's fine- You're a hero, you can do this!"
With another deep breath, he did his best to calm down from the minor scare seconds ago, and reached out his hand to the man, allowing his power to activate. The man froze mid-step as the imaginary strings connected to his limbs. Toby still didn't like how easy it was to take control of people's bodies. There was no resistance at all. Of course, he'd only used his powers on three
"What the hell?" he yelped, struggling to move.
"I, uh- I did try to warn you sir-" Toby said, his confidence slowly coming back, and he smiled behind his bandana "Now let's go return those items, yeah?"
"What the fuck are you doing to me?" the man yelled as Toby made him walk in front of him and they made their way to the store. The police were in front of the store when they turned the corner. The man, still holding the back of stolen items, started straining more. Toby felt him pushing against his influence, and wasn't sure if he was exactly comfortable with how easy it was to overcome...he waved when one of the officers noticed him, sending the man towards him.
"Uhm, here's your thief! I believe he has some things he'd like to return to you-" He nodded, before releasing the man. The thief scrambled away from him, right into the waiting arms of two more officers.
"Keep that little fucker away from me!" He yelled, glancing at Toby as he was handcuffed.
The officer he'd waved to before approached him, tilting his head. A confused look on his face.
"Uh, thanks... kid?" he said, "But who the hell are you?"
"Oh, uh-" Toby started scooting away, thinking for a moment before remembering the name he'd told Niki. He kinda liked it, so he said "Just call me Tubbo. Have a good night!"
And before the officer could say or do anything else, he bolted off into the night, a grin spreading across his face.
The rest of the week, Toby continued to do this. Most nights, apart from the incident with Schlatt and the would be robber, were actually peaceful, and Toby would spend those nights on a roof, looking at the sky, or down and across the city. It was an incredible sight. Though there were some downsides to this new secret hero work. While he did try to only be out a few hours a night, he was becoming more tired in the mornings, and having a harder time focusing during the early classes in school. When his family and his friends asked about it, he just told them he'd been having trouble sleeping due to headaches. Which while not completely truthful, wasn't entirely false either. Small headaches had become a regular thing for him to get every other day. He chalked it up to the stress of the last few days. They weren't horrible, just annoying.
By the end of the week, more people were starting to talk more about this "anonymous hero" that was popping up more and more across the city, helping civilians and even the police on one occasion. As he listened to his friends talking about this hero at lunch on Friday with enthusiasm and awe (Especially Tommy, who seemed to be becoming this hero's number one fan the more the hero appeared), Toby sat and listened, and nodded in agreement, trying to remain nonchalant and to keep a small smile of pride from his lips.
