To Be Educated
June 3, 2020
"I understand that I will never understand but I stand."
Thank you for reading To Be Educated.
My name is Rubix and I'm a 20-year-old Civil Engineering student. Studying in such a major, it may then come to a surprise why I'm taking the time to write this work. I enjoy history and social justice. I enjoyed learning in AP US History and I also volunteered in the Korean Resource Center, a non-profit organization that provides legal and social aid to immigrants and people of color. Even in middle school, I wrote an essay about Human Rights that you can read in Wattpad titled "The Right to be Human".
I want to establish that I'm not a member of the black community, but I'm a person of color- an immigrant, low-income, first-generation college student. I want to show my support to the black community and my black readers through this work. I wish to not offend anyone through my action to write To Be Educated. I have first discussed my thoughts to my readers on what I should do as a writer and they have told me they want me to use my platform to spread awareness of the BLM Movement. My response was creating this work. I hope that when the state of America has reached this conclusion, it will be a contribution to the historical event we are currently living in.
If you never heard of me before, I'm most known for my story TGGBB that spreads awareness about bullying. Bullying has always been seen as a childish that brings to mind scenes of stealing lunch money or spreading gossip. However, bullying is an umbrella term that includes discrimination of any kind- racism, sexism, homophobia, and many more.
Due to what my platform represents, I believe it is my civic duty to spread awareness of recent events that are affecting the current state of America. In a non-political stance, I will discuss several different topics that have imposed grievances to the black community which includes police brutality and white supremacy.
After each essay, I will provide a reference list of where I have gathered my information and provide. I will be sure to fact check all of my references as well as check the political stance to make it as neutral as possible. You are also welcomed to fact check me and ask me to include anything I have missed in the essay.
I will also include two spaces for the readers at the end of each essay: "Discussion" and "Safe Space".
The first space "Discussion" where readers can discuss the topic explained in the essay. Such discussion will be expected to be civil and factually-sound. You may message me if you see a heated topic that has overstepped the boundaries of being civil and I will delete the conversation.
The second space "Safe Space" is where readers can let out their grievances which don't have to talk to always be about the essay topic. You can share your story or your beliefs on the matter without wanting to turn it into a debate.
Here is the current list of topics I wish to write about. Please comment if you want to see other topics to be discussed.
- Black Lives Matter Movement (What is it and how it started?)
- America's Racist History
- Police Brutality (Group vs Individual)
- White Supremacy/White Negligence
- Protesting vs Rioting
- Other
This is in dedication to the black community, my black readers, and the BLM Movement.
