December 31st, 1984
George talked to the guy who owned the chalet and managed to get the two of us to be able to stay until New Years Day. We made sure everybody else was able to find their way to the airport and stuff on their own.
First this morning George took me to breakfast. I wasn't too hungry up until we walked into the small cafe that smelled of deliciousness.
"We have to leave tomorrow night," He said, feeding me a brownie.
I sighed. "Don't remind me. I love it here, and I don't want to spend the rest of the time sulking."
He scooted closer to me and put an arm around my shoulders. His big puffy jacket made me warm. "We're gonna have an unforgettable New Year."
I smiled, feeling his lips kiss my cheek.
"I wish I could call Jeena to see if she's planned anything for the wedding. Knowing her, she probably has almost everything figured out. The location, her dress, theme, Honeymoon..."
I trailed off, starting to daydream.
George chuckled. "What are you thinking about?"
I turned my head to him, almost worried to answer the question. "Being proposed to."
At first, his expression was a bit shocked. I started getting flustered. "S-Sorry... I don't want to rush into anything..."
Then he looked like the happiest boy on earth. "Don't apologize. I'm glad to know you want to spend the rest of your life with me."
"When did I say your name after thinking about engagements?" I teased, nuzzling his nose with mine.
He pulled me closer. "I wonder who else it would be." He kissed me on the lips.
"I hope they have the ball drop on TV," I said.
"The what?" He asked.
"Oh. Right... In America on New Years, there's this big dramatic ball that drops when it gets to midnight. It's part of how we celebrate the New Year."
"That's... interesting."
I shook my head laughing and stood up. "Let's go back. I can plan something for dinner, and we'll have a perfect New Year's Party."
When we got back to the chalet, I wasn't sure what to do. George was in one of the bedrooms working on some music. As much as I wanted to peep in on it, I figured he wouldn't let me see it anyway.
I looked through a few cookbooks earlier in the week, even while everybody was here. There were a lot of good-looking foods to make, so when I found out we could stay until New Years, I got busy looking through any English-translated cookbook I could find.
I wasn't gonna do anything too big, since I didn't have much time to prepare. We'd eat dinner, hang out for a while, and search for the ball drop. I really hoped they had it in this area, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.
George's Point Of View
The phone started to ring somewhere around the place. I didn't even realize there was a phone here. When I found it, I picked it up reluctantly. "Hello?"
"Hey Yog!" It was Andrew.
"Andy? How'd you find this number?" I asked.
"Found it on the papers we got. I figured I'd check in with you guys. How's it going?"
"I should be asking you that," I laughed. "Deej is looking at stuff to make for dinner. Hey, what time is it for you right now?"
"It's... pretty early. Two in the morning."
"Oh wow, why are you still awake?"
"I Guess it's the anxieties of the New Year. So it's around eight for you? Did you guys just go eat?"
"Yeah we did. Hey, what are you doing for midnight anyway?" I asked.
"Watching something called the ball drop on the television. Then after..." he chuckled.
I scrunched up my nose. "Okay. I don't need to hear about that. And DJ told me about that too, She's trying to figure out if she can get the channel here. I'd feel bad if she couldn't but-"
"They have it!"
I jumped a little, then laughed. "Never mind. I guess she found it."
"What are you doing for New Years?" He asked.
I smiled. "Doing the same thing really. But... I think this is gonna be one she'll never forget."
"What'dya mean by that?" He asked.
"Oh, nothing." I was suddenly very giddy. "She'll get the New Years kiss she's never had. She's been hinting at me that's what she wants."
"Who are you talking to?"
I jumped a little, seeing DJ had walked in. "Is it your side chick?"
I chuckled and pulled the phone away to kiss her. "It's Andrew."
"Oh, is Jeena there? I wanted to talk to her." She asked.
"Is Jeena there now?" I put the phone back to my ear.
"Yeah, I already heard the conversation. We should let them talk." Andrew said.
"See you soon." I handed the phone to DJ and walked away.
DJ's Point of View
Jeena had told me all about the magazines she's looked in, picking out all of the dresses she likes, veils, themes, and so on.
"Oh, DJ before you go, I wanted to ask you something," Jeena said.
"Sure, what's up?"
"Would you... be my maid of honor?"
I started to laugh. "Of course. Why do you seem so nervous about it?"
"I don't know. I read it's always a big deal to ask somebody that."
After saying our goodbyes, I hung up to go find George.
When I did find him, he was in the bathroom with the door open. He was looking at himself in the mirror.
"Whatcha doin?" I asked.
He sighed, touching his hair. "I've been thinking about something for a while,"
My heart sank. "It's, not about me, is it?"
He looked shocked and looked at me. He put his hands on my face and kissed me. "Not at all, darling."
"Oh okay," I said. "Then what is it?"
"I think I should cut my hair soon."
I tried not to let my disappointment show. "Oh... well, then you can do that."
"But I know you like my hair like this." He looked at me again.
"I do," I was quiet. "I really do."
He shook his head while smiling. "Okay, then I'll keep it."
"No," I said. "You can do whatever you want with your hair. It's not up to me."
"Exactly. I don't want to because you don't want me to." George winked.
"But..." I sighed. "Okay. No, I don't want you to cut it shorter. But, I know you'll have to at some point. Maybe just... keep it for a few more months?"
He turned off the bathroom light and walked out with me. "Okay, anything for you, my love."
I looked down, not wanting him to see how flustered that made me. Anytime he calls me "darling" or "love"...
It was getting closer to midnight now. About a half-hour until then. George and I ate dinner a while earlier, and now I was in his arms on the couch. I had almost fallen asleep until George told me it was time to switch the tv onto the ball drop.
I got up and started to attempt to wake myself up.
"George," I said. "I need you to bring my energy back up."
He laughed and pulled me back to the couch and started tickling me. It was definitely unexpected and shocking, and I broke into giggles. "George! Okay, okay! I'm awake now."
"Or... we could take this a different route." He backed me down on the couch and started to kiss me, running his hand up my thigh.
My breathing started to get erratic. "N-no... not yet..."
He pecked my lips a couple more times and hovered his hand over my pants. "Alright then."
I was a little woozy now, but I did my best to get my mood back to normal.
"Five minutes," I said. "That's crazy..."
"What is?" George asked.
"How we're already halfway through the decade. The 80s have been... fun so far. Especially with me being able to date somebody as perfect as you."
"You sure it's not all for the money?" He teased.
"Don't compare this relationship to Everything She Wants," I said. "I do not make you work to give me money. And I'm sure not pregnant with any baby of yours."
"Do you want to be?" He asked.
That caught me off guard. George realized what he said and started to get flustered. "I'm sorry, um... t-that wasn't appropriate."
"It's okay," I said. "That's just... a big question."
"You don't have to answer. I'm sorry for throwing that in your face." He put his hand on his forehead and rubbed it.
I took the hand in my own and held it. It was so warm I never wanted to let go. "If you want the truth... I want all your babies. Just, not now."
That made him perk up a bit. "Of course. Obviously, let's take our time."
There was one minute left now, and I was getting amped. "I don't know if I want this year to end. It was such a great one. Well, maybe a little tragic at times but..."
"Soon enough it'll be one year of me loving you." he brushed my hair out of my face.
"Boy... time really flies." I sighed.
Thirty seconds now. I felt myself becoming a little emotional. George seemed... jittery. Nervous, maybe.
"You okay babe?" I asked.
"Huh? Oh yeah, just, you know. Anxious for the New Year." George shifted his position a few times on the couch. I frowned but didn't think anything of it.
I started counting down with George once it got to ten seconds. "Ten, time, eight, seven..."
My pulse was really going up. I sure hope I get that New Years kiss.
"Three, two, one!"
I threw my hands in the air and cheered. I felt two arms wrap around my waist and pulled me in for a kiss. Butterflies erupted in my stomach, and I smiled. He knew exactly what I wanted.
He pulled back and got down on the floor.
"George, what are you doing?" I asked.
He switched his leg position so he was only on one knee.
George's Point of View
My hands were trembling. I couldn't believe I was doing this, but there was no better moment than now. I pulled out the velvet box and held it in one hand, while the other held DJ's.
"I didn't really put a speech together for this..." I said sheepishly, watching DJ's eyes get wide. I opened the box to reveal the most perfect ring I could find. "Andrew's speech to Jeena kind of explained a lot of what I would've said. Like how I know that we haven't even been together a year, but I just know you're my soulmate. You're my forever lover, and I can't imagine being with anybody else but you. Even when we're apart, we always find our way back to each other. And to me, that's true love. You are the most beautiful, kindhearted, strong, feisty, and perfect person I've met. I love you so much, darling. So Donna Joe Collymore- don't give me that look, I know you don't like it when I say your full name... will you, marry me? Become my Mrs. Panayiotou?"
She was crying now. I couldn't tell if that was a bad thing or a good thing really. I was all too nervous.
"Oh, George! Yes!" She managed to say.
I was filled with so much joy that all I could do was laugh.
I slipped the ring on her finger and embraced my fiancé.
My future wife.
