Chapter Six
The upperclassmen returned from their mission in bloody body bags. I'd gone to the morgue and confirmed my visions had been correct. Since then, I was getting daily visits from faculty and being questioned endlessly. The principal had mentioned bringing me in to see the higher ups at Jujutsu Headquarters but Mr. Yaga was against it and tried to talk the rest of the faculty out of it. He wanted me to continue my high school years with my peers.
When I was released from my dorm confinement, I went to the city to buy snacks. I'd promised Sukuna pocky next time I visited and I was getting much too stressed out here, maybe now would be a good time to practice to see if I could get a better grasp on entering Sukuna's domain. I was keeping my distance from as many people as possible. I was exhausted from seeing all the things that were going to happen and all the ways people were going to die. It was too much.
I kept my head down, staring only at my feet as I made my way to the convenience store. The whole way there, I felt like I was being watched. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. It didn't feel malicious but it was still unsettling. I could sense Sukuna's presence but he was still keeping quiet.
I made it to the convenience store and picked out several different flavors of pocky, my favorite rice balls, a nutella kitty pastry and a couple of other snacks and sushi before making my way to the counter. Looking at the feast of snacks and sushi I'd gotten I felt a little embarrassed, what if I couldn't make it back to Sukuna's domain? Or even worse, what if I got there and he hated everything. Maybe I should try making him something? I thought of the omurice Geto had made for me, maybe he'd teach me how to make it.
The clerk repeated my total loudly, jarring me from my thoughts and I looked up to pay him. A gasp caught in my throat as I saw a bullet hole through his head. A brief vision flickering across my mind of him locking up one night and getting shot by a common thief.
"You should quit this job and look elsewhere." I said softly as I handed him money.
"You should keep your opinions to yourself." He rudely tossed my bag of purchases at me and I struggled to catch them.
"Hurry up, what's taking so long?" A girl a year or two older than me snapped from behind me.
I picked up my fallen change that had scattered when the clerk threw it at me along with my purchases. "Sorry." I bowed my head and tried to duck out of her way.
She blocked my path and I looked up and instantly regretted it as I was struck with a violent vision of her horrific end in an alleyway not too far from here. I felt sick. "You're still in my way." She smirked.
I tried to go around her but she roughly grabbed me by the arm, her freshly manicured nails digging into my arm through the thin jacket I'd worn. I should have worn something thicker but I was too numb to be bothered by the cold.
I could make myself some ribs.
Sukuna's voice drifted all around me, and I shivered at the threat within it.
"No, please." I pleaded with him quietly.
"No, what?" The girl roughly shoved me.
I stumbled but managed to catch myself and flee the store without any further incident. I made the mistake of looking up at all the people walking by and felt my heart begin to race as I began to see all of their final moments. I took off running.
It still felt like I was being followed.
My heart hammered in my chest as I began taking random turns in an attempt to lose my pursuer. I ran as fast as my legs would take me trying to dodge pedestrians and avoid looking at anyone. I ducked down an alley and paused as I was hit with the metallic scent of blood. It was all over the alley.
I looked ahead of me and saw a cursed spirit on all fours, it looked somewhat canine like but had eyes all over its body. It was currently feasting on a homeless man. It raised its ugly head splashing blood all over the corpse it had been devouring and lunged at me with a snarl.
I screamed and raised my hands to try and shield myself.
Curse magnet.
Sukuna growled inside my head and I gasped as I felt him pull me back a step. For a moment he flickered into view as he made contact with me.
"Heel." He growled at the canine like cursed spirit and flicked his hand outward.
I watched in horror as it was bisected and blood sprayed everywhere.
"Ryoko!" That sounded like Gojo!
Are you coming, little medium?
I glanced over my shoulder to see Gojo running toward me before looking back at Sukuna as he began to fade from view. He extended a hand to me.
"Ryoko!" Gojo yelled as I placed my hand in Sukuna's and felt myself vanish from the alley.
I reappeared next to Sukuna's bone throne to see him sitting atop it looking as regal as ever. "You saved me." I said softly, I finally felt like my mind was my own.
"It would be annoying if my only current foothold into the world were to die." He shrugged.
I smiled, "thank you."
He ignored my thanks and held out his hand expectantly, "what did you bring me?"
I handed him the bag from the convenience store.
He looked into the bag and frowned, "what is this?"
I reached into the bag with a sigh and pulled out my favorite flavor of pocky, strawberry and opened the box. I reached in and plucked out one of the thin pink sticks and offered it to him.
He frowned.
I sighed and took a bite before extending another one to him, "they're snacks. These ones are my favorite." I smiled.
He swiped the box back from me and took a bite of the one I'd been holding out for him. I couldn't tell what he was thinking but he ate them all. Save for the one I'd bitten and half of one he'd bitten that was still in my hand. I finished mine and tried to give him the other one but he shoved it back at me. "What else?"
I finished the pocky trying not to think about that fact I'd just split a pocky stick with the King of Curses. I stretched to reach and retrieved the cute Nutella kitty pastry and held it up for his inspection, "these are really yummy, and look how cute it is!"
Sukuna scowled, "you got me cute things?"
"Do you not like cute things?" I asked curiously.
He rubbed his temples before looking around at the mountain of death before us, "what do you think, little medium?"
"No?" I asked.
He sighed. "You're too damn far away." His clawed hand caught the back of my thin jacket and I let out a squeak as I was easily lifted off my feet and dropped onto the arm of his odd throne of bones. It was surprisingly smooth and I realized the blanket I'd given him was draped over it to make it more comfortable.
My face flushed at our sudden closeness.
"Give me the cute thing." He growled.
I opened the pastry and held it out to him. He took a bite nearly biting my finger in the process and I almost dropped the pastry as I jumped as his teeth grazed my finger. Once again he said nothing as he finished the nutella kitty pastry. His hand lashed out, suddenly gripping my wrist tightly.
I felt my breath catch in my throat, did he not like it? He raised my hand toward his mouth and I noticed some of the nutella cream filling on my index finger. His tongue lashed out, lapping it up and a squeal escaped me. I would have fallen backward off the throne if he hadn't been holding my wrist so tightly.
"W-what did you do that for?!" I squeaked.
"I thought something amusing would happen." He smirked.
"What?!" I panicked and wrenched my hand free.
"Something amusing did happen." He pointed before motioning to the bag I was now somehow holding again, "next."
"Do I have to feed everything to you?" I asked nervously.
"Yes."
I hesitantly retrieved one of the packages of rice balls from the bag, unwrapped it and held it out to him. This process continued until the entire bag of snacks had been consumed. He didn't make any comments about anything other than how bad I was at feeding people.
"Did you like any of them?" I asked hopefully.
"Human ribs would have been better but it was fine." He shrugged.
I smiled as I realized that meant he liked them. "I'm glad. I was worried you'd hate them all and I was so excited to share all my favorite things with you."
He looked momentarily uncomfortable and changed the subject. "You shouldn't have told anyone what you see." Sukuna folded his arms across his chest.
"I didn't want anyone to die." I bit my lip.
"You put a big target on your back. Not wise for someone as physically weak as you are." He noted.
"A target?" I shivered.
Sukuna looked thoughtful, "would you like to make a pact with me, little medium?"
"A pact?" I asked, confused.
"It will be entirely to your benefit." He shrugged.
"Why would you do that?" I pondered.
"You don't need to know."
I frowned, "what would it entail?"
"If we make a pact I'll have a stronger foothold in the world around you, I'll keep you safe." He reached over and gently caught my neck in his hand, his thumb sweeping under my chin and directing my gaze to his. "In exchange, you'll bind your soul to me."
"What does that mean?" That sounded very serious.
"Should you die for any reason, you'll remain here with me." He shrugged.
"If that happens can I request a non-scary room?" I grimaced at the death and decay around us.
Sukuna laughed at this, another of his rare laughs, "you can request it, but don't hold your breath."
"Hopefully I die in a plushie store so I can bring all the plushies with me." I grumbled.
"Do you accept?" Sukuna held a hand out to me.
I thought it over, "are you sure you want that? Aren't I annoying?"
"Very." He agreed with a soft smirk.
"Why would you want to be stuck with someone annoying for eternity?" I asked.
"Do you accept, little medium?" He ignored my question.
I slipped my hand in his, "I accept."
The moment the words left my lips I felt a strange sensation overcome me as if my very soul were being bound and chained to Sukuna. That also meant his soul was bound to mine. Why would he do that?
