Chapter 20
Dragged to the library, Ciel found himself in the company of other children who were all either reading, or playing with a small black cat.
"You can read or go out to the garden or eat as much as you want," Alois stated, watching Ciel closely.
Ciel nodded, his eyes wandering the various bookshelves. He remembered his father telling him that the quickest way to learn about a person was to examine the books that they read and so he tried to make a quick assessment of the vampire Ferid.
The majority of the books lining his bookshelf were of various subjects, though Ciel took note of the fact that the top shelves--which were unreachable to the smaller children--were lined with books in a foreign language, one Ciel couldn't recognize.
"Ah, those are weird books. No one can read them," Alois commented, catching Ciel staring at them intensely.
"I guessed as much," Ciel said, turning his gaze to the children.
"So, Ciel, why don't you tell us about yourself?" Alois inquired, slinging his arm around him.
Ciel frowned, not liking the physical contact. "There's not much to tell," he responded, removing his arm from him.
"There's always something to tell," Alois answered back, putting his hands on his hips. "Why don't you tell me about the demon you own?"
Ciel's eyes widened, and the question as to how this boy knew about his demon caused instant panic to set in.
"W-wha--"
"I saw that seal in your eye. Don't worry, i'm not gonna tell Mr. Bathory. I have one too," Alois stuck out his tongue revealing a mark. He then smiled as Ciel asked, "You have a demon?"
"Yep! My very own. She does whatever I say, what about yours?"
Ciel didn't want to divulge any information, not only did he just meet this boy but to know that he too had a demon was problematic. But he had seen his seal, and therefore denying he had a demon would be pointless.
"The same goes for me," Ciel finally said, looking away. "But if you have a demon then why're you still here?"
Alois turned and stepped closer to the children, grabbing two by their shoulders and pulling them close to him, "Why? It's simple really. No one knows what it's like outside, so who knows if it's safe or not. Plus, here i'm taken care of so there's no need to make an effort to escape. With Hannah, none of the older boys would dare hurt me, after all she's a scary demon who I own. I'm basically king here!"
"King?" Ciel repeated. "How can you think of yourself as a king when you're at the mercy of a bloodthirsty monster?"
Alois' expression of glee faded to a pout, "Well, then what about you? You have a demon too and you've made no effort to leave this place either. It's quite hypocritical of you to act all high and mighty when we're in the same position."
'I'm nothing like you!' Ciel wanted to shout, but he held his tongue.
"There's nothing for me," He muttered, lowering his eyes.
Alois observed him for a moment, searching his face. Then, with a final sigh he said, "You should just enjoy Mr. Bathory's hospitality. Even if he is a blood thirsty monster, with a demon by your side you'll never be in danger. If he tried to kill you your demon would kill him right? My Hannah says that if she suspects i'm in even a little bit of trouble, she'll kill him in an instant!"
"Okay," Ciel responded, forcing a small smile to his lips.
In truth, he had no intention of enjoying any sort of hospitality the vampire decided to show him. But the vampire had suggested that he knew who had killed his parents and that was an opportunity for answers that he couldn't let pass by.
