Chapter 15 - You Hypocrite
While Josh deals with how he feels through the heat of the night, Nikki deals with it in another fashion. Her cousin Ally introduces her to a friend of her boyfriend's that graduated high school with them. They meet each other on a double date one night.
"You ready to do this?" Ally asks, walking into Nikki's bedroom.
"Not really," Nikki says with a frown still glued to her face.
"I still miss him. I can't go, sorry." She has her eyes fixed on their picture from Winter Formal.
Ally comes overtaking her younger cousin by the arm.
"Pish posh, you're going, and you're getting rid of this. If he lied about drinking, how can you be sure he wasn't into something worse? I love you, Cuz, but come on, give Tonie a chance."
A sigh in agreement Nikki's simple nod rises from her desk, going out to Ally's car. Together they head over to Hibachi's Japanese Stake House, Ally's favorite restaurant.
After they find a spot to park, they rush inside and find their dates already waiting for them.
"Hi Billy, you remember my little cousin Nikki, right?" She introduces Nikki to break the ice before she's introduced to her blind date.
"Yeah, I remember; been a while, and Nikki let me introduce you to my boy Tonie."
Tonie gets to his feet, going over to pull out Nikki's seat for her.
"Oh, classy!" Ally teases with a playful smack on Nikki's leg.
A false smile comes to keep the mood light-hearted; Nikki isn't even attracted to Tonie. He's a little chubby with a full scraggly beard. Tonie looks like he crawled out of bed. His uncombed hair and wrinkled clothes turn Nikki off.
"Pardon my appearance; I was told this was totally informal. You, on the other hand, hello, beautiful!" He says, trying to make a good impression.
Nikki just smiles and puts her nose to the menu. She occasionally engages in small talk, but she's not too crazy about her date.
Dinner feels a bit awkward, but in the end, Ally bails on Nikki to try to force her to spend time with Tonie.
"Nikki, Tonie is going to run you home. I'll meet up with you later. Play nice, or I'll have to kick your ass, mister."
"I'll be a perfect gentleman, Scout's honor!" He tells Ally holding his hand in the air.
Billy and Ally don't waste time taking off, leaving Nikki with a guy she doesn't like. Tonie offers a friendly gesture to take Nikki's hand, but she refuses to do so, getting up on her own.
Outside the restaurant, Tonie guides her over to a blue early 1980's Chevy Camaro. The paint is faded, and the interior is in desperate need of cleaning. Nikki feels gross crawling into her seat. It gets even worse when she catches a whiff of weed trapped within the fabric.
"Oh, good God, your car stinks. Take me home now; ugh, you're a pitiful pothead."
"Yeah, my bad, it helps me relax when classes get tough. College is no joke, girl, but hey, it doesn't stink as bad once you try it. Wanna go get high before I take you home?" Tonie offers, purposely stalling for time to allow Nikki to adjust to the fumes.
She's curious since she knows what it's like to smoke cigarettes and get drunk, but getting high is something she's not tried. After another couple of minutes, she's gotten used to the stench and finally decides.
"Screw it. You live once right, let's do it, but I'm not sleeping with you, and we're not dating!" She explains, nervous about going off somewhere with someone she barely knows.
Soon after she accepts, Tonie drives over to his studio apartment. They park then head inside, where Nikki takes a seat on the couch.
"Go ahead and chill here for a sec; I'll go get what we need," Tonie tells her disappearing to his bedroom.
Tonie returns with a pinner clutched in his hand. He stops right in front of her extending out his hands.
"Guess which hand it's in." He plays feeling confident he's about to get her higher than hell and get lucky.
Nervous with second thoughts, Nikki points to his right hand, and once he opens it up, there rests the joint in his hand.
"You win! Awesome, ever done this before?"
Nikki shakes her head no, with a shade of red beginning to glow from her cheeks.
"It'll be okay, you'll feel a little off at first, but once it hits your system, you'll wish to never go without again!" He explains, pulling it up to his lips with a lighter in his other hand, firing it up.
He drops to his knees to scoot closer to Nikki. He rests his hands on her knees to keep her from moving away. He gets in her face to give her a blast of smoke to help her nerves.
"This is called a shotgun. I'll inhale and then exhale; you'll inhale through your mouth. It'll break the ice, and then we'll pass it back and forth." Tonie explains the concept as Nikki opens her mouth, prepared to accept the hit off his joint.
Within seconds after inhaling a bit too deep, she's put into a coughing fit. It doesn't take long for her to feel the effects of the weed entering her system. She feels lightheaded and relaxed for the first time in a while.
"How was that?" He asks, seeing her begin to drop her guard.
"That was good, what was that called again, a shotgun. Wow, do it again if you don't mind."
Once again, Tonie moves in to deliver a second hit to Nikki. Only this time, before she can feel the effects hit her, Tonie makes his move forcing a kiss. Nikki fights back, pushing and shoving, but it's not until she uses her feet kicking him off her that she can breathe.
"Take me home! If you think you're getting in my pants that easily, take me home, you freak!" She demands with a slap across the face.
"Okay! My bad! I won't try that again. I was just trying to get you to ease up and relax. You're hot, and hey, you're smoking my stuff; you think it's free?"
Nikki's mouth dips open a bit, but she remains in her seat after thinking about it.
"Look, I'm sorry for hitting you, but I'm not ready to date, and if you want cash, I can get you that, but you're not getting me in bed." She reinforces her stance, trying to cling to what morals she has left.
"I can respect that, but I'll let this one goes for free. From here on out, if you want to get high here, it'll be either a kiss for each hit or maybe occasionally, a cop-a-feel if you feel frisky enough. I mean, I'll take what I can get, you know, fair trade." Tonie says, trying to see how far he can push his luck.
Nikki's expression is one that turns from frustration to cringe thinking about letting Tonie touch her slim figure, but she does enjoy how she feels getting high. She tries to convince herself to go, and she breaks another rule when she makes a request.
"Got anything to drink? Not water or pop, but something stronger?"
Eager to fulfill her request, Tonie leaps to his feet, getting her a beer from his minifridge. Two cans of beer in his hand, he cracks them both open and hands Nikki hers.
"Cheers! Nothing like getting stoned and having a drink to kill the blues." He announces, relighting the joint, and sits beside Nikki as they pass it back and forth.
Shortly after they finish smoking, Nikki leans back, experiencing her first high. Her eyes glaze over, and her mouth barely dipped open. She forgets about how she feels and focuses on the room spinning for a bit and sips on the beer to kill the cottonmouth.
The take advantage instinct for Tonie takes over again when he goes in for a second kiss, but unlike before, Nikki's inhibitions are lowered. She quickly returns the kiss, but she doesn't see Tonie; in her mind, it's Josh come back to her in a fantasy.
In her mind, they're talking back and forth about working things out.
"My angel, I'm so sorry I lied, but I won't ever do it again. Can you forgive me? I love you." Josh whispers into her ear.
"Absolutely, babycakes, you're everything to me. I can't wait for you to wrap those strong arms around me and hold me close. I miss listening to your heartbeat in my ear." She tells him with a soft glow that emanates from her body.
She begins to moan out loud, and Tonie takes that as a signal to move in for more. He moves his hand under her belt moving his hand lower to seduce her more.
Somehow during her embrace with Josh, that feels like destiny bringing them back together. He pulls back to warn her about what's happening to her.
"Nikole, wake up!" He says just before he vanishes as she snaps back into the room where she's feeling Tonie still kissing her with his hand down her pants.
A struggle resumes when she fights him off. She tries to move away to get his hand from under her jeans after she frees herself from the kiss.
"No! No! NO!" She screams, pulling with all her strength freeing her from his grip.
"You're not him; you're not Josh! Take me home now!" She stresses, scared he might try to rape her.
"Sorry, but when you kissed me, you started to moan, so I thought it was alright, but I'll take you home. I'm sorry, I guess I read the signals all wrong." He states, trying to save himself from being dismissed permanently.
His attempt to get inside her head works like a charm when she believes he has an intense glare to his eyes. That's all it takes to seal her fate by being his puppet. Once he sees she's fallen for his trick that's worked so many times before, he offers to hold his word and takes her home.
The Camaro comes to a halt around the corner from the house. Nikki has him drop her off, so he can't learn exactly where she lives. Although her gut instinct screams for her to run without looking back, she does the opposite as the urge to wanna get high creeps into the back of her mind.
"Well, it was fun, to say the least, and interesting, but I guess I'll be seeing you around," Nikki says, trying to get away from Tonie as fast as her legs can carry her.
"Stop by anytime, I don't work cause of student loans, and I'm always holding. Plus, we might hit it off; you never know but don't shut it out because of some jackass from your past." He plays, trying to weaken Nikki's ambitions more.
All Nikki hears without paying too much attention is getting high again and possibly getting drunk with someone she can barely trust. A wave and waiting for him to pull away, she stands there feeling sick to her stomach, feeling her high dissipated with a crash back to reality draws closer.
"What the hell am I doing? I just got high and drank a beer! God, this is why I left Josh, and here I am doing it; what's wrong with me?"
Hands planted up against her stomach; she walks around the corner heading home, where she types up an e-mail to Josh explaining her entire evening. She can't bring herself to hit the send button, so instead, she deletes every word refusing to make herself look bad.
Unbeknownst though, after Tonie leaves, he heads over to another girl's dorm room, where he takes out his aggression on her that Nikki left him feeling in his apartment. The only thing he cares about is making her a notch in his collection of girls he's slept with then left behind.
On days she's feeling down, Nikki heads over to Tonie's to get high. She refuses to drink again when feeling like a hypocrite sinks too far into her mind, upon his request from their first time getting high together. Nikki forces herself to make out with Tonie on occasion, and afterward, she feels horrible, but it's better than feeling the hole in her chest since she left her heart back with Josh.
After a while, she becomes accustomed to getting high, but she is unaware that Tonie has been spreading rumors and lies about them sleeping together.
He even goes as far as mentioning she's bisexual and bring over other girls to enjoy with him. It'll be a mistake that'll blow up in due time, but for now, he plays the cards close to his chest with only his close friends to work up his credentials while Nikki is using him in return.
