Chapter 17 - The Summer Heat
While Josh excruciatingly severs all ties with Nikki sitting in his car, things back at the scene in K.C. are still on edge. Tonie's friends come to his aide. They help him to his feet, with one of them driving him back to his apartment, helping him inside to his couch.
The seven others left behind from Josh's abrupt departure feel the heat aimed at them. Brandon and Phat Pat stand between the two sides, who are ready to continue to throw down.
"Where's ya boy at, eh? Afraid one of us is going to beat him down? Come on; we'll destroy you pansies, C'MON!" One of the bystanders screams with everyone forcing Ally back, trying to find any word on her little cousin.
Aiden stands out front, ready to wave on anyone willing to take a swing at them. Ready to let a punch fly, he's pulled back by Justin, who spills his idea of what needs to happen.
"Big 'A' we need to roll bro, f'real I'm down to brawl, but this ain't our yard; it's theirs! Another day, another battle, bro man, so let's roll out!"
With a drop of his hands, Aiden takes the advice and pulls out the keys to his car. He calls out to the others after Justin's words sink in.
"Boys, let's go! Time to head home 'til next time!" Aiden calls out, then quickly slides through his window, firing up his import tuner leading the way back towards Huntington.
After the growing mob on both sides dissolves for the night, it leaves behind a lingering effect that some of the usual people who take part in the events dwindle with each passing weekend.
Worried about Nikki, Ally heads over to her house the next morning to find her still passed out on the bed. With a soft and gentle push of her hand, Ally stands at the edge of the bed.
"Nikki, honey, it's me, Ally, time to come back to the world." She says soothingly, bracing herself with a fake smile.
After she stirs for a minute, Nikki rolls to her side with her makeup smeared under her eyes.
"Long night, I guess..." Ally mentions with her eyes locked on Nikki.
"He left me standing there... I ruined his life and mine by being so stupid. I don't know what to do or what to say; I hate myself more than Josh hates me."
Ally takes a seat on the bed.
"Now you stop right there and listen to me. I'm the one who introduced you to Tonie. Maybe I could talk to him for you. Yes, you weren't thinking since you were drinking and smoking weed, but if you love him, I'll go over there." Ally offers riddled with guilt.
Nikki simply shakes her head no with a blank stare controlling her eyes. Both young women sit there in silence until Nikki sits up, hugging her cousin.
"I'll be fine and let him be; if he wants to talk, he'll get ahold of me. I miss Josh so much already, but I screwed up, not him." Nikki sheds some light on her cousin.
"Well, at least get cleaned up so I can treat you to brunch or something, okay. I owe you that much. I feel responsible for getting you into this mess. I'll do whatever I can to help you out. I love ya, girl." Ally says when she gets to her feet.
"I love ya too, and yeah, brunch at Dwight's sounds good," Nikki replies, trying to put on a fake smile.
That Sunday, Ally treats Nikki to brunch at her favorite local restaurant. They hit up stores and attempt to let go of the agony for a little bit.
Although peace comes their way, back in Huntington, it isn't sunshine and dandelions. Another flare-up between Justin and Hilary are into it hot and heavy again. After he arrives at her place, and discovers she's hungover and messed up on pain pills all over again.
"Hilary, you home?" He calls out, opening the door to the game room.
He peeks around the corner to see her stumbling.
"Well, hello there, you sexy stud you. You, you, you uh want to uh like come in something." She cracks up, giggling after she thinks over what she said.
"I said come in, that's sooooooooo funny. Yeah, like, totally funny."
"Are you high?" He asks, holding her in place with his hands firmly on her shoulders, trying to make eye contact, but Hilary can barely keep her head up straight.
"Holy cow, you are completely blitzed out of your head! That does it; I'm out of here!" He yells, feeling his temper flare.
Hilary continues to giggle and snicker. She reaches out, grabbing his junk; she squeezes, forcing Justin to scream in pain.
"AH, LET YOU GO, YOU JUNKIED UP, CRAZY WENCH!"
His tone doesn't bother her, but the one single word that sends her over the edge.
"Crazy! I'll show you what crazy is you, you rude cockblocker." She tightens her hand even more and nearly puts Justin on his knees.
"I just wanted to grab you and fuck your brains out again. Now I'm going to bust your balls another way!"
She follows Justin down when he drops to his knees in distress with her grip firmly on his testicles.
"Let...me...go...now..." He groans, placing his hands on her forearm, using his country strength to pry her off.
"Get...off...of...my...balls... you...psycho!"
In a single downward motion, Justin frees himself. Hilary tries to snatch him again with her other hand, but she's denied thanks to his speed. He grabs her by the wrist.
"Don't touch me ever again! I'm fed up and done with this garbage! You think because you have money you're better than me? Take your money and shove it up your rear end!" He yells before he picks her up over his shoulder and drops her on the loveseat.
Justin walks away, still using one hand to cover his manhood. He's nearly limping due to the pain, but by the time he reaches his car, Hilary is hot on his trail, staggering in her efforts to stop him from leaving.
"You don't dismiss me, and I'll be the one to toss you out and for good! No one breaks up with me and leaves! I'm breaking up with you, and if you ever come back around here, I'll cut off your tiny baby-sized dick and feed it to my dog!" She threatens, kicking his car door.
By now, Justin is beyond livid. He fires up his car, revving the engine hard. Justin slams his shifter into reverse, flying down the hill. Unmindful, he needs to stop to make sure it's clear. He backs out onto the main drag, where he gets t-boned by a full-size Chevy truck.
It strikes the driver's side door and sends them both skidding several yards down the road. The impact shatters the window cutting Justin's face and knocks him out with his head resting against the steering wheel, blaring the horn as blood drips. The truck driver is dazed, but he tries to shake some of the haziness away to realize what's happened.
In a panic, he shifts his truck into reverse and turns around. He's uninsured with a suspended driver's license. He doesn't even bother to check on Justin before he speeds away to ditch the truck.
A motorist driving in the opposite direction sees the Nissan in the road and notices smoke under the hood beginning to rise. The driver stops to check on Justin, and once they discover he's alive, returns to their vehicle, retrieving a fire extinguisher to dowse the engine compartment to play it safe.
One of Hilary's neighbors overhears the crash and reports it to 9-1-1 immediately. Once the call goes out, in need of a wrecker, the driver dispatched to the scene is none other than Momma C.
She arrives at the scene, but before a Deputy Sheriff waves her through, she notices the car and how severe it's mangled.
"Oh, my God!" She says to herself, looking for the ambulance.
"Dear sweet Jesus, please let him be okay!"
Stopped by the car, she climbs out to talk to a friend that's a deputy she's known since high school.
"George! Hey George, what happened?" She begins trying to remain calm.
"Uh, hit and run, Paula; kid seems pretty young but unfortunately no witnesses."
"Yeah, I recognize the car. Can you take me over to the ambulance before they take off?" She asks, peering over his shoulder.
"Come on but keep it brief; I overheard one of the paramedics say he might have a head injury."
She gasps and follows him, where she steps into the back to try to get an update.
"Hey fellas, this kid is a friend of my son. Is he going to be alright?"
"Hey Ms. Cline, yeah, he might have a concussion but overall, maybe a fractured wrist and a rib injury." The paramedics inform her knowing it's against county policy, but they all stick together at these scenes.
"Let me know please, I'll have to call his parents and let my son as soon as I can. Page me when you hear anything, please!" She says to them with that worried look written in her eyes.
"We will, I promise, but we need to hurry! He needs to get checked out."
Momma C takes a step back so that they can close the doors. Once the doors slam shut, the ambulance begins to pull out, with Momma C still battling the urge to cry.
As swiftly as possible, she loads up Justin's car on the back of her tow truck, hauling it off to the yard where she calls the boys.
"Come on, pick up!" She grumbles, listening to the phone ring. "I know you are home; pick the hell up!"
"Hey, momma, what's up?" Josh answers.
"Justin was in a horrible wreck, and he's on his way to St. Joseph's right now. I'm sure the car is totaled but stay near the phone. When I hear anything, I will call you, but don't head down there because it is a Catholic hospital, so only family can see him."
Josh stands there listening and nearly drops the receiver from his shoulder.
"Damn..." he replies without much to say.
"I uh, yeah, I'll be here, James is at work already, but I'll stick close by the phone. See you soon, momma, bye."
The call ends, and Josh drops the cordless telephone along and flops down on the couch. He feels powerless with a sense of karma coming around to knock them down a few pegs. He feels heartbroken and regrets kicking Nikki out of his car the night before, and Justin is now in a car wreck.
Soon after, a visitor comes to the door. After a couple of knocks and calling out from behind the door, Alexander enters the house.
"Hey, wanted to see if we were getting into anything tonight." He says, but he quickly notices the horrified look on his friend's face.
"Who died, man?"
"No one bub but Justin was in a wreck. I want to head down there, but we won't be able to be informed of anything. I feel like everything's jacked up, you know. I kicked Nikki out of my car and out of my life last night, and now this. I don't wanna think about what else is going to go wrong." Josh breaks down, feeling a wave of guilt slam over his heart.
Alex takes a seat in the recliner. They sit there with only the stereo playing a CD in the background until Momma C calls again a few hours later.
"Hey, momma, is everything okay?" Josh begins with Alex listening.
"It will be; he's in good hands. I'm here with his parents and the doctor just now left. He has a broken wrist and a couple of cracked ribs, plus a pretty bad concussion. He'll be here for a few days for observation, but he's lucky." Momma C explains with sighs of relief in her voice.
She's not the only one breathing a bit of relief. Josh relays the news to Alex, and they both take in a deep breath to relax at last.
"Well, since our boy is going to be alright, you wanna head out, grab some food, and talk? I know you're not feeling the greatest man; it's my treat this time. You've been great helping with stuff at the house and showing us around and all that. It's the least I can do and all I know to do." Alex offers, getting to his feet.
"Yeah, I could use some time away from here. Hell, I don't even remember eating today at all. Hey, I hope you don't mind Taco Bell, I got some terrible munchies, and no, it's not from getting high." Josh jokes, trying to cut the pressure in the room.
Alex waves him over to the door so that they can split. Josh locks up the house and spends the day getting everything off his chest about Nikki and what happened in the car. It's a bonding experience that deepens their friendship.
After a few days go by, and the boys head over to Justin's to check on him after getting released from the hospital. James feels the worst being the last one to find out about the wreck. Together they head out to Justin's in the Grand National. When they arrive, they see him getting home as he climbs out of the car.
"Hey, amigos, how goes it?" Justin calls out when he stops from walking into the house after seeing the Buick pull up the driveway.
"You're alive; you're alive!" James teases, screaming like a mad scientist.
The boys share a heart filled laugh before breaking any of the pent-up tension.
"So, did they make you feel better? Did they rebuild you like the Six Million Dollar Man?" Josh asks, exchanging a comfortable bro hug.
"I will admit this; it's good to be home for a homecooked meal and a chance to sleep in my lumpy bed for once," Justin says, rubbing his neck.
Inside, the boys head back to Justin's bedroom, where they turn on the radio to keep his parents from eavesdropping.
"I didn't wanna say anything until we were all together, but guess what guys. I nailed Scarlett the other night. Ah man, it was like magic, you know. She's so fine too, let me tell you what!" James brags before a slap meets the back of his head.
"Hey, moron, she's a lady, and you treat her like one. Don't rush; it'll only ruin things. Heck, bub, I took my time with Nikki. Look at how that ended. Now, I ain't saying y'all are going to be like that but use my mistakes as an example." Josh educates him.
Justin nods in agreement with Josh's statement. Alex sits there like a bump on a log with nothing to say.
"Yeah, bro, for real, listen to Josh on this and listen to me too. I found Hilary all doped out again, and that's how I ended up in that crash. Don't play any more games because this one seems like a great girl. I have been working my butt off to turn my life around for the better. I failed the other day when I got into with Hilary, but she had ahold of my manhood. Anyways, James, don't use this girl like others you've used. Because if you do, I'll beat you down myself!" Justin says with a serious face.
"As for you, Josh, go makeup with your girl if you can. I don't know what happened the night you whipped her new boyfriend, but if she wants to make it work, I say find a way and make it. She worked wonders for you, bro."
Josh lowers his head in shame, but before he can speak up about what occurred, Alex beats him to it. James and Justin are astounded when Josh confirms it all with a single nod, which surprises his two best friends.
"Whoa dawg, you went off on her like that? I mean, I figured you'd be angry over her drinking and gettin' stoned and whatnot, but wow, that was cold." James says, leaning back against the wall.
"Yeah, I know, but what else could I do? Y'all know I wasn't in the wrong the day she blew up on me over that empty bottle in my room. So, tell me, why should I be so forgiving over her stuff."
Justin makes his case to Josh, hoping he'll heed the advice to make things right.
"Because one Jesus said to forgive and be mindful of all those who make mistakes. Two, you're crazy about this girl, and three, if you don't, it could haunt you for a long time."
All Josh can think to do is nudge his shoulders and relax up against the side of the bed where he sits on the floor.
The boys change the subject and chat for the rest of the day. They take it easy and stay for dinner. Even an odd decision gets made when they attend church with Justin and his parents. After church, they head home, leaving Justin to head home with his parents after the Wednesday service.
"So, you gonna do it? You going to go talk to Nikki and try to work things out?" James wonders out loud on the drive home.
"Nah, bub, I ain't gonna do it."
"Why?"
"Because it's time to move on, she'll be fine in time, you know. I love the girl to pieces, but she can do better than me." He explains with a heavy troubled heart. It's the final time her name is brought up.
Over the next few weeks, Justin begins physical therapy while James and Scarlett become the hot topic when everyone is together at the house.
She even invites Josh over with James one weekend to meet a friend who moved in next door. It's a meet-cute that might be what Josh needs to help move forward from the funk he's stuck in, while Justin also tries to move on after what happened with Hilary.
His next adventure begins when he arrives home from physical therapy one day to find a sports car sitting under the car portal.
"Oh man, dad, is that for me?" He asks, rushing to get out of his mother's car.
"Yes, sir son, she's a beauty, and we got a purdy good deal on it. Now she ain't exactly new, but it's a solid car inside and out." Mr. Adamson explains as he dangles the keys to a pearl white 1993 Dodge Daytona sports coupe.
In less than a split-second, Justin takes the keys and begins to explore the entire car. From inside and out, bumper to bumper and under the hood, Justin is like a kid at Christmas. In no time, he takes off with a sore hand down the road to test drive his new ride, and when he returns, he hugs his parents, grateful to be on the rebound with the heart of summer set to begin.
