Chapter 16: Trial Period

I wake up with hands playing in my hair. Rough fingers dig into my scalp in a way that makes my eyes roll in the back of my head. I swear I can feel the shivers that start from my scalp all the way down to my toes.

"I'm trying to be cute," Casper complains chirpily, as he continues to massage my head. "But the noises coming out of your mouth are a sinful reminder of last night."

"The snake poking my leg is an equal reminder I would say," I chirp back, moving my thigh to push into his erection.

"I get snake?" he pouts teasingly. He grinds unashamedly on my thigh. "Lawson's monster cock sounds more enticing than snake."

I chuckle softly and then turn my head around the room as I suddenly realize that the other side of the bed is cold. "Where is Lawson?"

Rather than answer me, Casper props himself on an elbow and speaks towards the hallway. "Where's the food, pookie?" he calls out. "We're starving."

Two beats of silence pass before soft footsteps echo just outside the room. Lawson walks through the doorway with a tray full of food. He narrows his eyes at Casper with his lips puckered distastefully.

"I told you not to call me that," he states plainly.

Casper swats his hand in the air in dismissal and then waves him forward, eyes fixed on the steaming food on the tray.

Lawson moves towards us carefully, as though trying to avoid spilling the three glasses of orange juice. Beside the glasses, is a stack a chocolate banana crepes and a large side of bacon.

Casper and I sit up in bed and scootch over to make room for Lawson.

I moan as the first bite melts in my mouth. Breakfast in bed and head massages? "I'm never going to want to leave this place."

"It doesn't have to end..." Casper speaks softly, wiping a smudge of chocolate from the corner of his lips. While the words could sound like the start of a joke, I recognize the seriousness in his tone. Casper is very rarely serious. There's no wiggling brows or innuendo in his tone.

I incline my head towards him. "What do you mean?"

"We're all adults," he starts. "We can have sleepovers like this whenever we want. We can wake up together and go to bed together. We can take turns making breakfast and preparing our lunches. This doesn't just have to be on weekends or out of town flings."

A strip of bacon hangs halfway inside my mouth, unbitten. I'm not totally following yet, but my pulse picks up in anticipation.

"We want to give this a real shot," Lawson expands. "We've known you for a very long time, Desirae, we don't feel the need to take things slow. Of course, we'll move to whatever pace you're comfortable with, but we would like you to join us officially. We don't want this to be just a fun hookup."

"All three of us together... Like an official polyamorous couple?"

"I know it's probably not what you expected for yourself, but we think this could be really great...And you never were one to care about social expectations," Casper adds.

I'm speechless, too many thoughts racing in my mind to choose just one to focus on. My body screams to say yes, but the small lasting rational part of me wonders how this would work long term.

"Think of the next few weeks as a trial period," Casper suggests.

        "A trial period?"

"We would like you to come live with us for two weeks," Lawson clarifies. "No pressure. No permanent decisions. Just a chance for you to see what our life together could be like."

That doesn't seem so bad—if I'm being honest, I was struggling to find any faults. The proposal was all too appealing.

"I bet by the time the work Christmas party comes around, you'll be begging to dance with us both." Casper grins confidently.

I cock a doubtful brow. I could just imagine my colleagues' reactions if Casper and I walked in with the same plus one.

"Catch you in a Lasper sandwich in front of Tina," Casper continues. "The horror on her face alone should be enough to entice you to agree."

I groan but can't help but laugh. Tina is the crustiest worker in the office. To this day, I don't know what her role entails, other than offering "constructive criticism" at the drop of a hat. She might drop dead at the sight of me showing up with two dates.

"Oh please, Dez," Casper jumps in place. "Let me shove my tongue down your throat, and then his." He nudges his head at Lawson. "It'll finally shut her up. She won't even be able to look at me anymore."

        I giggle some more.

"Is Tina the old bat you're always complaining about?" Lawson asks. "The one who printed you a new agenda because yours was too colorful?"

"Yes!" Casper cries out. "I found my blue highlighter in the trash the other day and I'm sure it was her. Blue hurts her eyes."

It didn't occur to me how much more Casper would have to interact with her, than I did. As the social worker, he's secured himself a desk in the main office. I laugh some more as I picture Casper shooting Tina the stink eye over his computer.

There's a heaviness in the silence that follows our giggles. Our conversation has veered off track.

       "So..." Casper prods.

Right. I haven't given my answer yet. I bite my lip in a useless attempt to stop myself from uttering the words that I'll probably come to regret. "I'm in." What's two weeks in the grand scheme of things? Probably a lot of time to break my heart...

Casper seals the deal with a sloppy kiss and jumps to his feet. "Let's get a move on, we've got lots of packing to do today!"

"Today?!" The tray on my lap shakes with my outburst. Casper is too busy to care about my surprise. He disappears into the next room, and by the loud dragging noises, I assume he's working on the suitcases.

I look at Lawson for help. He swallows his laughter and shrugs a shoulder. "Are you sure you're ready to spend two weeks him?"

I shake my head fondly. "Are you sure you're ready to share him?"

"I could use an extra pair of hands to keep him in line." He looks me up and down. "Amongst my other motives..."

       Fuck me.

Lawson places a quick kiss on my lips, before joining Casper. I fall back onto the bed and groan. They're going to send me into cardiac arrest before the two weeks were over... What have I gotten myself into?
