Chapter Nine

- Sunoo's pov

It was six o'clock. The sun had already set and it was already pretty dark outside. I opened my closet and pulled out a hoodie before putting it on. My mum had left to do some grocery shopping earlier so I was currently home alone.

I went downstairs and entered the living room before pulling a book out of the wooden bookshelf.

        "Nature and its Beauty"

It was one of my mother's art books. She'd show her painting and explain each story behind it. I flipped into the first page and a water painting of a daisy was on it.

"Daisies:- they resemble purity, innocence, and new beginnings. This book is a new beginning for me so I decided to add it onto the first page"

I smiled as I recognized my mum's pretty handwriting. I was about to flip onto the next page when I heard the door open. "I'm home~" my mother chirped and she shut the door after her. I put the book down and went to help put the groceries away.

"What are you gonna make for dinner?" I asked as I put a bunch of vegetables in the fridge. "I don't know, what do you wanna eat?" I looked down as I shut the fridge door. "How about grilled cheese sandwiches?" I suggested. "Hmm, good idea!" I giggled as I walked out of the kitchen and into the living room.

I put the book I was looking through back onto the shelf as my mum came into the living room. She sat down on the sofa beside me and sighed. "How are your friends?" She asked. I looked at her and then looked down, my eyes on the floor. "They're doing good. Heeseung has been chosen as his class's president so he's been busy with that the entire year. You know, helping the teachers, taking care of the class and all that" I said and sat back on the sofa.

"Jay, Sunghoon, and Jake have been okay too. Sunghoon got picked to be in the Ice team so he's been practicing extra hard. I feel kinda bad for him now since he hasn't even played a game yet but we got sent home" my mother sighed. "It's alright, he'll be able to play soon enough after this mess is sorted out" I nodded and smiled. "Jungwon and Niki are also good. Niki joined the dance team this year and for Jungwon...he's been helping me out a lot" my mum smiled and got up to hug me. "I'm so glad you made good friends like them," she said. "Yeah...I'm glad too" she let go of me and looked at the clock. "I'll go make dinner now since I have to sleep early today" I nodded and she flashed me a smile before going into the kitchen.

I went upstairs to my room and lay on the bed. The silence was killing me so I decided to turn on the radio for some noise.

"Yes, thank you very much. Now the winner of this raffle-"

"She loves you, yeah yeah ye-"

        "You look happy and healthy-"

I sighed as I switched through the different channels.

"Now, onto today's dynamite news! Mokoto champion, Kim Sangwoon, suddenly quits for an unknown reason"

I lay back down as I decide to keep it on the news channel seeing there wasn't any good music playing right now.

"Dahi, what are your opinions on the legend's sudden leave"

"Yes, it's a very mysterious way to leave. There was absolutely no statement on why he left so suddenly. Many people are speculating that he was attacked and bitten by a vampire and then became one himself. Nasty creatures, I tell you, awfully nasty"

I shut my eyes, remembering how I was bitten. Are the vampires that bad though?

"Yes, I actually think that theory is true...it makes a lot of sense. If he didn't become a vampire he wouldn't have quit. He knows how filthy those creatures are, that's why he didn't want to reveal that he is one now"

I turned to my side as a different person spoke.

"My son, my son was like that. I and my now ex-wife had gone out for dinner and once we came home, we couldn't find our son anywhere. We looked everywhere for him but we couldn't find him. Later that same day we got a call from the police department saying that they think my son was a part of a car accident somewhere at the edge of the forest. He has gone out with his friends and the car went out of control and crashed into a tree. None of the five of them were found. Not dead, nor alive."

"Where did you find him then?"

"My ex-wife called me a week and a half later and told me that he was found at the vampire training center. She went to see him but I didn't go. He was already a horrible person as a human, disrespectful, rude, and a crook. Now that he was a vampire, he was probably ten times worse. Kang Taehyun. I hate saying his name. They say he was out there today. On the train attack. They say he was a part of it"

        My eyes widened.

        Train attack? What train attack?!

My room's door suddenly opened and I saw my mother at the door. "Sunoo! I've been calling you for five minutes now! Is everything alright?" I stood up. "Yeah...uhh, I need to go get something quickly. You can eat if you want" my mother looked at me confused as I dashed out of the room.

I left the house and went to the closet supermarket I found. I entered the dimly lit place and looked at the elderly man who was sitting at the cashier. The store was filled with goods all placed neatly in their places. I grabbed a newspaper out of the stack that was placed at the entrance as the man looked at me. He had green eyes, that green that had a hint of blue in it. His grey hair was brushed neatly away from his eyes. "500 Won," he said as I placed the amount on the counter. I looked at the name tag on his work vest as I gave a quick, "Thank you" before leaving the store. My gaze moved to the front page and my eyes widened.

"School Train gets attacked by vampires in the middle of Ohaki"

My gaze falls to the ground as I try to process the words. I look up again and then start running back home.

"Sunoo! Where did you suddenly go?!" My mother huffed as I entered the house. "To the stores" I simply answered as she looked at me, worried. "Why? You could have just said you wanted to get something! Don't leave like that again!" I nodded as I went to the phone hanging on the kitchen wall. I dialed the first phone number that came into my mind. Jungwon's house's number. My mother watched me as I stood and waited for an answer.

"Is something wrong?" She asked. I bit my lip as I pulled the phone away from my ear and then began dialing a different number as that first number "isn't available right now." I passed her the newspaper and she read the front page as her eyes widened. "Oh god-" I hung up the phone and rushed to the phonebook in one of the kitchen drawers. Flipping through the pages, I stopped at one, scanning the names scribbled onto the page.

        Park Sunghoon.

I picked the book up keeping my thumb inside to mark the page I was on as I went back to the phone. I dialed the number and waited. Then, someone finally picked up.

My mother watched as I dialed the others' numbers and got answers. None of them were answers I was hoping to hear.

"They're still looking for him" I answered my mother's question after I hung up after dialing Jay's house's number. "They're all still missing..." my mum bit her lip. "Hey, let's not think too much and just pray they're all okay. We both should go get some rest, don't you think?" I looked down. "But, mum-" she cut me off by cupping my face and caressing my cheek with her thumb. "Baby, they're okay...don't think about it. You'll wake up tomorrow and you'll hear that they're all home, safe and sound" she kissed my cheek and I smiled. "I'll go get ready for bed," I said, knowing I wouldn't actually be able to sleep. She nodded and I walked away, going into the bathroom.

I left the bathroom and walked back downstairs. It was about eight right now. Pretty early for me to sleep but I was tired as I've been awake for ages. "I'm going to bed," I said to my mum who was still working on something in the kitchen. My mother turned and I saw she had a bandage wrapped around her wrist. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused. "How did you get hurt?" I questioned, not knowing how I hadn't noticed it before. My mother laughed and shook her head as if to say it wasn't anything important. "While I was cooking I got a little burnt...don't worry about it, it's not a big deal" I nodded and sighed. "I'll be going to sleep now," I said, smiling. My mum nodded as she turned back around to the counter. "Alright, goodnight! Love you!" She turned her face to me and smiled. "Love you too~"

I soon got into bed and turned to my right side. As tired as I was, I just couldn't go to sleep. I turned to sleep on my back again before staring at my ceiling. I turned around once more and I began to look around my room. It has looked like this for as long as I remember. The hard walls were covered with sky blue wallpaper that had doodles of the sun in pastel yellow on it. It was starting to get worn out as the corners of some sheets were curling up. Some other sheets look like they've been stuck to the wall using tape.

The set of furniture has been the same set from my childhood. The white chest where I used to place my toys had stains of dried paint or marker ink on it. The closet was white and had stickers of marvel characters and other characters from childhood shows stuck on its mirror. The only different thing was the bed I was laying on. When I turned nine we had to get a new bed after I outgrew the one I already had.

After about an hour I heard my mum's bedroom door close and I plugged my earphones into the radio and turned it on. Some music from the 80s was playing on the channel I was on but I didn't care about it. I just thought that the radio ambiance was gonna put me to sleep, and soon, it did.

The next time I opened my eyes was after I heard a crash coming from downstairs. It was morning already but the clouds had made the sky look dark. I heard the sound of the rain hitting the room's glass window as I rubbed my eyes. I looked at the time as I got out of bed.

        Ten thirty.

I heard another sound come from the floor below before someone began knocking on the front door. It's probably only mum getting ready for her shift at the coffee shop.

I put on my slippers and walked out of the room, the wooden floor creaking with every step. The knocks didn't stop, my mother wasn't answering the door. I scratched my head as I walked down the old stairs, now suddenly met with my mother's figure.

"There's someone at the door..." I mumbled as my mum turned to face me. Before I could've spoken again I froze at the sight in front of me.

Here, my mother stood, her eyes glowing red as she gazed at me. "Mum..." I whispered, my voice almost inaudible. She walked closer to me and cupped my face, her thumbs caressing my cheeks. This was different from yesterday though. This person didn't feel like my mum, she felt unfamiliar. Her touch was stone cold and without emotion. I stared back, still not able to move away from what now seemed like a threat.

"I'm sorry, baby" she whispered as she smiled, a tear falling down her cheek. She began crying and I didn't know what to do. Do I run? Hide? Do I stay here and hope this is just a nightmare?

I couldn't do any of them as the next minute the front door broke open, revealing a tall female behind it. Seeing the stranger breaking into my home, I finally moved and reached my arm out getting ready to shoot, just in case.

"Who are you?" I asked as the female raised her hands in the air. She was dark-skinned, a kinda darker shade than just a tan. Her long curly hair was put into a high ponytail. Her dark eyes scanned me as I looked at her. She had a tight white crop top on covered by a black denim jacket. Tied around her neck was a black ribbon that was holding what seemed like a work badge. The ripped black shorts she was wearing were worn over some tight fishnet stockings. I figured the reason she looked so tall was the black high heel boots she was wearing. Looked like the made her half a foot taller.

"I'm not trying to hurt you...don't use your powers on me," she said. Her voice was soft but it had a sharp tone to it. "What are you doing in my house?" I asked, looking towards my mother who was looking away, now silent. "My name is Riley Hans, I'm from the VTC; Vampire Training Center. Your mother has been reported to us last night and I've come here to check her up" I furrowed my eyebrows. "My mother is fine, please leave or else I'm calling the police" she scoffed. "You're mother isn't okay. Mrs. Kim?" Riley called out and mum didn't look towards her. "We'd just like to run some tests on you to check if you're o-"

My eyes went to my mum as she suddenly collapsed, her body falling onto the wooden floor with a hard thud. "Mum!" I called out, running over to her. Riley came into the house and ran towards us before kneeling beside me. "She's transformed, isn't she?" She asked, looking at me. I shook my head. "She's perfectly fine! Please, just leave my house!" I yelled, trying to pull my mother up. I shook her a little and her eyes finally opened. They were still red. I bit my lip. "Let's get you back to your room, okay? You can skip work today" I said, forcing a smile onto my lips.

Riley was now standing a bit further away when I heard my mum chuckle quietly before shrugging my grip off of her. "Mum-"

The next moment was when I realized that the person I used to call my mother, has now become a monster. She leaped towards the taller woman and pinned her down to the ground as they both fell on top of each other. However, before my mum could've done anything to the trainer, a gunshot rang through my ears, making me freeze again.

The entire world seemed to go in slow motion. I saw my mother fall as she lost control of her body. The trainer moved away as the floor became covered in red blood. I felt my eyes getting wet before I wiped them with my wrist before running over to the body on the ground.

"No, no, no! What did you do?! Are you crazy?!" I cried as I ran over to my mother's body. "Why?! She didn't even do anything to you! You could have just pushed her away!" I yelled at Riley, now sobbing as I held onto my mother's body.

"She would've killed you," the female said, looking at her crop top which was now covered in blood. "No. No, she wouldn't have killed me. She wouldn't even be able to try to hurt me. She's my mother. She won't just do whatever to me" I hissed, letting go of my mum and getting up. Riley scoffed. "You don't know how vampires are like. Once she transforms she won't be able to recognize you" I looked down as I began crying again.

This isn't just some stupid nightmare. This is reality. Your mother is gone, Sunoo.

I suddenly fell to my knees as I felt they grow weak, sniffing and wiping the blood on my hands off on my shirt.

Why can't I just live a happy life? Why does everything always go wrong?

I turned my head as I tried getting up. Once I did, Riley came up to me and suddenly grabbed my Jaw making me hiss in pain before shrugging her grip off. "Did she bite you?" The female asked. "What..?" Before I could've answered she turned to the front door and locked it before she came up to me again.

"Pack up. I'm taking you to get tested"

I furrowed my eyebrows. "What? No! I can't just leave! She didn't bite me, I swear!" Riley shook her head as she looked up at me. "I don't think you understand, but here at the VTC, we don't just do whatever the vampires tell us to do. You're the one who does what we ask" she hissed, grabbing my arm as she looked me in the eye. I shrugged my arm away. "Well, I'm not a vampire! Leave me alone! Please!" I definitely wasn't in the mood for arguing. All I wanted to do right now was curl up into a ball and cry it all out. I wanted to be in my mother's arms like I always was. I wanted to hear the words she would always whisper into my ears again. I wanted her here. I needed her here.

"Stop crying. It won't do you any good. I'll give you ten minutes to pack up. If you don't, then we're just gonna go without any luggage" I wanted to look up into her eyes and tell her that I wasn't going, but I had no energy left in me. I couldn't even move.

"Go" she ordered and I looked at her. "But I'm not a-"

I felt a strong pain in my left arm, making me stop what I was saying. Riley pointed her index finger at me and then turned her wrist to the right, and my body followed the movement. My own body was completely out of my control. She was controlling my body.

"S-stop it!" I cried, closing my eyes tight. She was using a third power on me. She had a third power. Body control. She can control others.
She laughed and all of a sudden I felt the strong, invisible grip finally let go of me. My legs trembling, I ran to my room and shut the door, locking it after me. My knees were shaking as I pulled a backpack out of the closet. I had no idea where I was going. I didn't even know why I was packing. It's not like I am actually gonna go with them...am I?
I stuffed a few random shirts and pants into the bag before throwing in some pairs of underwear with them. I looked around the room, my vision blurry as I went to sit down on the messy bed.
I need to change into something else...
I stood up again, barely able to balance as I took off the shirt and threw it onto the floor. I grabbed a white and blue striped shirt from the drawers and put it on.
Wait, Sunoo...you aren't gonna go with them, right?
I huffed as I kneeled beside the bed, tears forming in my eyes again. Before I could let a tear out I heard the phone ring from outside in the hallway. As I flinched, I immediately got up, sprinting out of the room and picking up before Riley could. I couldn't hear who was on the other line but I grabbed the old phone and walked into the room and locked the door. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs as I threw the phone onto the bed.
My breath became heavier as my heart began to race. I stood behind the door, shaking, hoping she wouldn't come to break it open. I went back to the phone and the voice on the other line made me relieved in a way, but more panicked in another.

"Sunghoon..." I finally spoke.

Three hard knocks on the bedroom door. I felt like I could stop breathing any minute. I couldn't even control my breathing anymore. The female's hands slammed against my door as she called out my name. I finally caught up the courage to finish the sentences I had started.

"...please come help me...I'm scared"

The door suddenly broke open and I threw the phone behind the bed. "Sorry..." I quickly apologized. She bit her lip. "Who were you talking to?" She asked. I shook my head. "No one...I was going to pick up but the phone stopped ringing" I lied getting up. "Where are you taking me?" I questioned as the female gave me a suspicious look. "The training center. Are you done?" I looked down, unsure.
Sunoo, you can't just let a random stranger take you wherever!
Hesitantly, I nodded as I grabbed my backpack. "I'm...I'm done" she smiled as she nodded slightly. The walkie-talkie she was wearing suddenly beeped and she sighed. "I'll be downstairs, if you don't come down, there'll be consequences," she said before rushing downstairs. I sighed with relief before walking back and grabbing the phone, putting it to my ear again.

"Sunghoon...?"
"Sunoo, are you alright? What is going on? Who is that?!" The male on the other line asked.
"I can't talk...she's coming...they're taking me to the training center...but I'm not even a vampire! She won't believe me!" I whisper-yelled as I heard footsteps on the stairs again.
"I have to go" I quickly said before whispering a quick "bye" and hanging up.

I checked the number that Sunghoon had called from and quickly grabbed a pen and scribbled it onto my arm. I then stood up and decided to get out of the room.

Once I stepped outside, I saw Riley, her eyebrows raised as she looked at me. "Let's go," she said, walking away. I looked down before hesitantly walking downstairs with her.

When we walked into the living room, I looked around and saw that my mother's body was nowhere to be seen. "Where...is she?" I asked, trying to stop myself from getting all choked up again. Riley looks at me then looked away. "It doesn't matter" she muttered as she unlocked the front door of the house. I bit my lip, unsure of what to do next. In the end, I decided to just walk out with her.

The cold air hit my warm body as I stepped outside of my home. In front of my house, a black car was parked. I looked at Riley who got into the car, sitting in the driver's seat. I took in a deep breath before getting into the backseat.

I heard Riley say something into her walkie-talkie but I didn't pay attention to what she said cause I had a million other thoughts running in my head. Without a word after that she drove off, leaving the street.

To get rid of the silence in the car I decided to just ask whatever came into my mind. "Who reported my mum?" I questioned and Riley slightly turned to me. "One of your neighbors. They saw your mum being bitten on the way home or something" I looked down before looking outside as we drove out of the village.

"Where exactly is the VTC?" I asked. "Pretty far...we'll be going to the city first before we go to the center, though" I furrowed my eyebrows, confused. "What, why?" Riley sighed. "Why do you keep asking stuff?" I shrugged as a response. "Why are you taking me to get tested?" I asked and she scoffed. "You've been bitten, why else would I take you to get tested?" I looked out of the window. "But, I've already been tested and nothing's wrong with me, I swear"

The car suddenly stopped and the female turned to me. "I don't believe shit" she smiled and then turned back around starting to drive again.

I need to find a way to escape...

After what seemed like an eternity we finally reached the city. The rain had stopped a while ago but it seemed as if it was going to rain again soon. Riley pulled up at a gas station before turning around to face me. It took me a moment to realize that she wasn't actually looking at me, but at someone standing behind the car. I turned around and my eyes widened.

       "Professor Lee...?"

Riley looked at me and nodded. "Don't try to escape, you'll only be making it harder for yourself" she suddenly said before unlocking the car's door and getting out. She began talking to the Professor and that's when I knew it was probably my only chance to get out of here.

Okay, Sunoo. All you need to do is teleport outside this car. Teleport back home...

I nodded to myself as I took a deep breath in. Closing my eyes, I imagined home. The only place I could be safe. But...home was far away. And that was the reason I ended up in the gas station's supermarket.

"Fuck" I cursed under my breath as I realized I had failed to get myself out of here. I looked out of the large windows in the supermarket and saw Riley talking with professor Lee. She still hadn't noticed that I was gone.

Okay, actually forget that. She saw me.

My eyes widened in panic as she turned her head to the supermarket and saw me standing behind the glass windows. "Shit, shit, shit!" I turned around, trying to find another exit to leave from. Okay never mind. There wasn't a different exit. The only way out was to teleport somewhere else...and maybe try to actually do it successfully.

I closed my eyes and opened them again and I found myself outside at the exit of the gas station. I breathed a quick sigh of relief as I began running out. I looked back to check that no one was following me when I bumped into someone. I looked up and was about to apologize to the red-haired female when I heard a shout come from behind me. "He's a vampire! Don't let him run off!"

I began to panic again as the girl furrowed her brows. Instead of trying to explain that I was not a blood drinker, I dashed away. The redhead sprinted after me before she disappeared and appeared in front of me again. Shit. She can teleport.

"I swear, I'm not a vampire! Please, they're trying to take me away!" She paused but still held on to my arm. "How do I believe you?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. "I..." I didn't know how to prove it. "You've been bitten. Stop lying" she hissed as her blue eyes gazed on my neck. "No- it's not like that- I..." I heard footsteps behind me and I turned around to see professor Lee running towards us. I bit my lip.

        Hold on.

Professor Lee can tell them that I am not a vampire! He knows that I am not one!

I looked at the Professor as he stopped beside us before thanking the red-haired female who then left. "Professor, you can tell her! Tell Riley I am not a vampire!" I said, sort of hopeful. The male nodded and turned around to look at Riley who had brought her car and was driving towards us. She stopped beside us and got out of the car, raising an eyebrow at both of us. "You never listen, do you?" She said to me. I glared at her now looking at the Professor again. She noticed where my gaze was going and she followed it. "What? Do you have anything to say?" She asked the older who looked down at me.

Come on! Tell her the truth!

He paused for a second and then looked at the female again, a smile on his lips.

"No. I don't have anything to say"
