The subconscious is a strange place... No one knows what it was created for.... Nor how it came to be.....

Whatever it was, though, this place is about to become a battle field.

Keisuke appears in a dark room, his feet touching cool marble. He's only wearing a red shirt and green cargo pants, no shoes on.

Keisuke: H-Huh?... (looks around) W-What's going on?

Keisuke?: Ahahaaahaaahah~ Welcome to the subconscious world, Keisuke!

Keisuke: (head whips around to the source of the voice) W-Who-

He does a double take seeing another him with red eyes, not seeming to care as he twirls a knife so effortlessly.

Keisuke?: (hums) Surprised, Keisuke?~

Keisuke: (takes a step back, is wary) W-Who are you?

Keisuke?: Me? (pretends to look shocked) How cruel of you Keisuke! How could you forget yourself?!

Keisuke: (eyes narrow) You're my pain and suffering, aren't you?

Keisuke?: (grins) Ding ding ding! Wow, nice one Keisuke! (claps) You truly are smarter than the rest of the Agency! I mean, come on! You knew where to go when you guys were trying to save Suzaku!

Keisuke: It's nothing much... (hand slips to his pants, feels a dagger)

Keisuke?: (smirks) But why didn't you tell the rest about your suspicions then?

Keisuke: W-Wha...? (looks confused)

Keisuke?: (hums) Why didn't you tell the others "You're wrong, it's not that way."? Was it because you wanted to trust Natsume? Was it because you wanted to let your sister shine? Or... Was it... (smirks) Was it because you were afraid that no one would listen to you?

Keisuke: (growls) S-Since when did I fear that?!

Keisuke?: (rolls eyes) Ever since Kenji's death, of course! You became an outcast! You promised Kenji that you would keep on living, but you didn't live it to its fullest! He must hate you so much now! 

Keisuke: A-AS IF! (grips dagger tight, feels slightly depressed, but he shakes that off once he remembers who's waiting for him outside) You may be my darkness, but I won't lose to you! 

Keisuke?: (smirks) We'll see about that then! (suddenly lunges for him)

Keisuke: (takes out his dagger, blocks Keisuke?'s attack)

Meanwhile, Junko wakes up in another part, feeling slightly confused over where she was, wearing a simple white hoodie, long grey pants and her hair let down.

Junko: W-Where am I?... (gets up, looks around) W-Where's the Gate to the Underworld?... I-I thought that they defeated me... I-I should be on my way there now...

Junko?: Upupupupupupupupupu~ Did you really think that it would be THAT easy?~

Junko: H-Huh?! (turns around)

She finds herself with swirly eyes and a twisted grin on her face looking back at her as she plays with a handgun.

Junko: (growls) You! 

Junko?: Yes, it's me, Enoshima Junko, the SHSL Despair!~ (smirks) The girl who just LOOOOOVVVESSSSS despair just because it's fun!~ 

Junko: (eyes narrow) Nothing's fun about spreading despair just because you're bored! No way! 

Junko?: (mock gasps) Puhhuhuhuhuhu~ How cruel of you! How can you say that to the queen?! 

Junko: You make it sound like you're not me, when you actually are! (glares)

Junko?: Pupupu~ You're no fun~ (pouts) I just wanna end you right now! 

Junko: (materialises a sword) Bring it then!

Junko?: (grins, aims her handgun at Junko) Let's start this battle, shall we? 

The screen is cut at those two scenes, with Keisuke blocking Keisuke?'s attack and Junko's hand gripping her sword.

The music starts playing as Natsume Amano turns into Shuka's awakened form, then Akino Kin opens up the game system as Ryaku Mizuya opens up his Magical Gates and Young Aruke Kin activates the Nature power.)

Episode 28: A Despair and their Remnant! Remember the Childhood Promise!

Keisuke: (dodges yet another attack from Keisuke?, pushes his dagger towards Keisuke?) 

Keisuke?: (smirks, just sidesteps effortlessly) Geez, you're getting so hotheaded! What's with the lack of tact in your attacks, huh, Keisuke?~ (taunting tone)

Keisuke: (backs off for a while, grips his dagger at the ready once more, thinks: This battle is getting nowhere! I have to find a way to end this!)

Keisuke?: (lunges for him again)

Keisuke: (eyes catch that, he sidesteps like Keisuke?, then kicks Keisuke? back) 

Keisuke?: AGH! (grabs his stomach in pain) 

Keisuke: (smiles a bit) Don't underestimate me! (charges for him) 

Keisuke?: (growls, blocks Keisuke's attack) Don't get cocky! You're nothing compared to Kenji! 

Keisuke: (grip loosens slightly) H-Huh?... 

Keisuke?: (finds that as an opening, tackles him to the ground, smirks) Am I wrong? Kenji was the brawn to your brains. He could fight anyone. Unlike you. You hid for all these years for nothing. You only hurt your friends and family more. 

Keisuke: (eyes widen) S-Shut up...

Keisuke? (mocking) Why? Am I wrong? Kenji would be soooooo disappointed in you. He told you to move on, yet what did you do? You ended up just prolonging his suffering. Geez, you sure know how to make others feel despair. 

Keisuke: I-I-I.....

Keisuke?: (smirks) You see now? You should just give up. You should just die.

Keisuke: (goes silent, small tears appear)

He remembers all the stares, the laughs he always got whenever people saw him...

"He's a Reaper for sure... His best friend died because of him...." 

"Kenji was better than him, for sure... What did Kenji ever see in him?" 

"He should be dead! Kenji should be the one alive! Keisuke's nothing compared to Kenji!"

Keisuke: (soft) I-I-I.....

Keisuke?: (chuckles maliciously) Just give in, Keisuke. Despair will give you everything. You won't care anymore. You'll just feel numb to everything. 

Keisuke: I....

Kenji: D-Don't die on the inside, Kei-chan.... Because.... (smile) I-I will always be with you... I-Inside you.... I-I love you, Kei-chan.... (closes eyes)

Keisuke: (eyes widen in shock, SOMETHING stirs in him) K-Ken-chan..... 

Keisuke?: (blinks) Hm? 

Keisuke: (realises something, looks up to the dark ceiling above, seeming to never end) H-Huh.... I-I-I can't believe it... I-I forgot Ken-chan's last words... (smiles) Geez, Ken-chan would have my head if I forgot that. 

Keisuke?: W-What are you talking about? (looks confused)

Keisuke: (closes eyes) Ken-chan is always with me... No matter where he goes.... No matter where he ends up... He will... (hand moves to his chest) He will always be with me... In my heart....

Keisuke?: (eyes widen in disbelief, thinks: H-How did he get his hope back?!)

Not far away, Junko is barely managing to keep up with her other side's attacks, unlike Keisuke.

Junko?: Puhuhuhuhu~ You're so slow!!~ (tries to shoot Junko's hip)

Junko: (blocks with her sword) I prefer using a skewer to be honest, but this'll have to do for now! (lunges for Junko?)

Junko?: (backs away effortlessly) You're really such a disappointment to Jin-sama~ How could you believe in something as stupid as hope after everything you've been through~ 

Junko: (glares) Hope is not stupid! You're just trying to make it sound so!

Junko?: Eeeeeh~ But didn't Mukuro leave you alone to join Fenrir?~ Didn't she abandon you just for them?~ 

Junko: She didn't! She was taken after declining! She told me herself! 

Junko?: What if she was lying?~ What if she was just trying to make herself sound innocent?~ 

Junko: Muku-nee would never do that to me! She loves me! 

Junko?: Oh, like how you loved your classmates so much to the point of making them kill one another? 

Junko: (eyes widen) T-That's a different matter! 

Junko?: (taunting) Oh, is it now? In the end, YOU did it. YOU killed Mukuro, YOU made everyone kill each other ALLLLLLLLL for despair!~ You're so disgusting, you should be sent to the Infinite Inferno to rot for centuries to come! 

Junko: (freezes) I-I'm not listening! 

Junko?: Oh, really? (smirks) Then why do you look so pale? And why are you shaking?~ 

Junko: B-Because.... (has no answer for that)

Junko?: See~ You're trying to justify your actions~ I'm just telling you the truth~

Junko: SHUT UP! 

Junko?: Why should I? You should just accept the truth;  that you're destined to always be hated, to always be thought of as the mother of despair. No one would ever think otherwise. 

Junko: I-I.... (is speechless)

Junko? (smirks) Just give up already. This charade is useless!

Junko: (looks down, can't say anything) 

Junko?: Upu~ Let the despair fester in your heart~ Feel it~ LOVE it~ 

Junko: (begins crying as she falls to her knees, feeling numb)

Junko's regret floods out in her tears, remembering all the deaths she caused... 

It'll forever be in her consciousness....

But  just then, when Junko's regret was ready to morph into despair...

An old memory...

A very old memory surfaces...

Mukuro: J-Junko... N-Never forget how much I love you... (smiles shakily) Don't come out until they're gone okay? I'll deal with them. You just stay here.

Junko: B-But what about you Neesan?! 

Mukuro: (grins softly) I will always come back for you. No matter where you are, I will always find you and remind you that I love you. 

Junko: (eyes water remembering) M-Muku-nee..... I-I'm so sorry.... I-I forgot... I-I forgot you cared for me....

Junko?: H-Huh?! (does a double take) 

Junko: (slowly gets up, a red aura surrounds her as she grabs the sword and looks up, revealing light red eyes that stare back at Junko?) I won't hide anymore! 

Keisuke: (eyes glows orange, gets himself ready) I won't pretend anymore!

Junko: Muku-nee and the others are counting on me! 

Keisuke: I DO have people who care for me!

Junko: That's why I will never fall into despair! 

Keisuke: (determined) I won't give in to despair! I promised Ken-chan that I wouldn't!

Junko, Keisuke: SO GET READY FOR YOUR DEFEAT, BECAUSE IT'S COMING RIGHT NOW! (charges at their opponents)

Keisuke?, Junko?: (barely manage to block) W-What the?! H-How did you get so strong out of nowhere?!

Junko: (kicks her back) The reason is simple!

Keisuke: (punches him back) Hope fuels people!

Junko, Keisuke: I'm not losing to you! Never in this life!

Junko?: (snarls) Stupid! Despair has everything you'll ever want!

Keisuke?: Hope is nothing! It'll only bring more despair! Don't delay the inevitable!

Junko: As if! Despair only brings pain and suffering!

Keisuke: (firm) As long as we have hope, we can beat despair!

The two start to glow even more as they grip their weapons, battle stances out and ready to attack.

Junko: I'm going to end this!

Keisuke: Get ready to lose!

With that, the two charge at their opponents once more, sending them back a lot.

Keisuke?: A-ARGH! (winces)

Junko?: (growls) A-Agh...

Junko: (walks over, sword is still out)

Keisuke: (does the same as Junko unknowingly, grips dagger in case Keisuke? attacks)

Keisuke?: W-What are you doing?! (backs away, fear in written in his eyes)

Junko?: (backs away, looks pitiful) W-What do you want to do with me?....

Keisuke: (looks at Keisuke?, remembers the only time when he meant his fear; Natsume's kidnap by Soranaki).... I won't destroy you. (keeps his dagger, smiles at Keisuke? as he holds out his hand to him) I want to accept you instead. After all, Ken-chan could accept my flaws, so I should be able to accept you too.

Junko: (holds out hand to Junko?) We're the same person. (smiles) I can't keep on fighting myself like this. I have to accept my past mistakes and move on. For the sake of everyone who's died because of Kirigiri Jin.

Keisuke: The past is past. (grins) Ken-chan used to say that a lot when I messed up with my analysis. I have to move on now. Like you said, Ken-chan would be disappointed to see me so down like this. (pumped up) I'll face reality with a smile on my face! No matter what!

Junko: Muku-nee had never given up on me, even when I was a despair-lover. (grins) If she can accept me, then I can accept you for sure. I want to show you how beautiful hope can be when you give it a chance.

Keisuke?: (eyes widen) Y-You....

Junko?: (eyes water) R-Really?... 

Keisuke: (smiles) Come on, we still have to save the multiverse. We can't stay here forever, now can we? 

Junko: (grins) Come on, we both know that you want this. 

Keisuke?: .... (looks down, sniffs before looking up with a teary smile) A-Ah! (grabs Keisuke's hand)

Junko?: (smiles) You're right. (grabs her hand) Good luck! 

The two then glow, sincere smiles on their faces as they slowly fade off.

Keisuke: (looks up, takes out the ring from a necklace on his neck, puts it on his ring finger) Thanks for reminding me about who still cares for me, Ken-chan... (soft grin)

Junko: (dissolves the sword, looks up too) Muku-nee, I'm coming back to you. I promise you I won't go anywhere. 

As both Keisuke and Junko close their eyes, they feel hope return to themselves once more, making them smile happily before Junko's body turns into a red glow which leaves the subconscious while Keisuke falls to the ground, being swallowed by the place....

Keisuke: Urgh... (slowly opens his eyes, rubs them) Agh...

Or not. 

Natsume: (screams in happiness) KEISUKE! (envelops him into a tight hug)

Keisuke: (chokes slightly) N-NEECHAN! Y-YOU'RE SQUISHING ME!

Touma: (joins the hug) KEISUKE! 

Akinori: (joins them) You worried us!

Ayame: (follows, cries) We're sorry for not noticing your pain before! 

Natsume: (sobs into Keisuke's shirt) I-I'm so sorry for not caring all these years, Keisuke! I was a stupid fool!

Keisuke: Hey, hey, Neechan, it's okay. I forgive you. 

Natsume: (sniffs softly) D-Don't lie. You probably hate me a lot.... 

Keisuke: (firm) Neechan. (grabs her shoulders) I forgive you, okay? I understand your circumstances. If anything, I should be the one apologising for making you worry all the time for me.

Natsume: (sniffs again) K-Keisuke... 

Keisuke: (smiles) Come on, Neechan, don't feel so down. After all, we still have a multiverse to save.

Natsume: (smiles back, albeit a bit happier) Y-Yeah! You're right! (gets up, holds out her hand to Keisuke) Come on, let's go, little brother! 

Keisuke: (grins) Ah! (takes her hand, gets up)

The rest shoot up seeing him awake, and rush over like a pack of leopards. 

Tireni: (hugs Keisuke with Ryaku, Bao En, Lizzy, Kai, Ceels, and Lucy) Don't worry us ever again, Amano Keisuke!

Kuriwa: (bonks his head) Y-Yeah!

Manuel: Or we'll make you suffer through cutesy cartoons for 5 hours! 

Keisuke: (mock gasp) Nooooo! You can't do that!

Y Aruke: (glares) Oh yes we can! 

Choiseung: We CAN make you watch the most hilarious movies that'll make you laugh till you lose your air! 

Chenhua: (smirks) I have tons of that.

Rau: It's VERY effective. (shivers) They use it on me and Akino whenever we don't want to listen to them. 

Tadeoniu: (shudders) Sheesh, you're making them sound terrifying. 

Jorogumo: (shakes head) They ARE terrifying. 

Reaper: Correction, you're making them sound like monsters. 

Movien: (chokes slightly) I-I'm not so sure about that....

Ungaikyou: Rasen's worse! He comes after us whenever we tease him with Shutendouji! 

Rasen: OH SHUT UP! (groans)

Konju: If you ever do that again, we'll be coming after your head! 

Akino: (hums) Agreed~

Keisuke: (sweatdrops) A-Aha... Spare me, oh great ones....

Bloody: (looks at the rest) Should we? 

Chilly: (shrugs) Why not? 

Mountaineering: (grins) Fine. 

Keisuke: (sighs in relief before being hugged by Kuriwa) E-Eh? Kuriwa-san? 

Kuriwa: (soft) Sorry for what I said about Kenji. You're an amazing person Keisuke. Don't you forget that. 

Keisuke: (smiles) Not planning on. I forgive you, Kuriwa-san. 

Kuriwa: (grins) Thanks. 

Keisuke: No problem. (keeps hugging her)

Meanwhile, Junko, now alive in a human body, wakes up to see an alive Mukuro looking at her.

Junko: (blinks) M-Muku-nee? 

Mukuro: (ecstatic) JUNKO! (hugs her) 

Naegi: (joins in) You okay?! 

Hajime: (just pats Junko's head) W-We were worried for you. (looks away)

Junko: (sweatdrops) You guys are worrywarts... (stops) Wait, Muku-nee, how are we alive?!

Keita: (grins) That's on me. I revived both of your Souls before they could go to the Underworld. 

Mukuro: (turns, bows towards Keita) And we are truly grateful for that. Thank you so much for the second chance you've given us, Keita-kun. 

Keita: (waves it off) Nah, it's fine. You guys deserve it anyway. 

Junko: (gets up) You're a nice guy, Keita-kun. 

Keita: (blinks) Am I? Inaho usually calls me insane and crazy. 

The rest overhear and sweat drop.

Tireni: Insane is somewhat the understatement of the century. 

Tadeoniu: (nods) Y-Yeah....

Movien: (mumbles) Terrifying would be a better term. 

Keisuke: (blinks) Okay, what the ever-loving Kami happened while I was out? 

Ayame: (coughs) Nothing much... Just a conversation between the three of them which was full of threats. 

Lizzy: (blank) Don't ask. 

Junko: (blinks) O-Okay? (looks confused)

Keisuke: I-I'm confused? (looks confused too)

Tenade: (sweatdrops, pats her head) You're so innocent, it's somewhat cute. 

Chenhua: (rubs his hand gently against Keisuke's cheek) Agreed. 

Junko: E-EH?! (blushes) I-I'm cute?! 

Keisuke: (goes red) N-No I'm not!

Naegi: (smiles) I think otherwise. 

Mukuro: (nods) Yeah! 

The two sputter, unable to form any words, which causes the others to laugh seeing them so cute. 

But eventually, they have to get serious. 

And Keita is the one who brings that to attention.

Keita: (coughs) Alright now, guys, I think it's time we get back to our mission. 

The group blinks hearing that.

Ryaku: (confused) Mission? 

Keita: (serious) The reason we were all gathered; to save the multiverse. 

Mukuro: (blinks) Hold on, are you saying that we're all part of that prophecy?

Keita: Only Naegi and Hajime-nii are not. The rest of us are. 

Shuka: What of me, Gentou and Hakushu? 

Hajime: From what we know, you guys are to help us beat the bad guys. But in general, it's the 33 of them. 

Ryaku: (looks at Keisuke, Akino and Y Aruke)

Keisuke: (nods)

Akino: (grips his watch)

Y Aruke: (hand moves to the Fluctuation Artefact) Let's do this then. (gets serious)

Keisuke: Ah. 

Ryaku: For the multiverse's sake. 

Akino: No doubt about that. 

The rest follow suit, their faces growing determined and serious.

Lucy: (turns to Keita with the rest) What do we have to do then Keita?
