Chapter 18 : House not Home
AFTER GLYDE dropped Jaycee back to their house, she mentioned something which left him to be reluctant. Jaycee noticed that Glyde was unwilling, and she could only smile bitterly.
"You haven't visited them for a while, right? It's just a couple of blocks from here, you should at least go and say hi" Jaycee advised him.
He hold himself from scoffing at his bestfriend's remark. He just let out a sigh and obediently said, "Alright." In any case, he doesn't want to argue with her about it. He was aware that he couldn't entirely ignore them.
It just funny to think that what he was gonna do is 'visit' and not 'returning'. It was as if he really became a guest for those people. Well, he can't blame anyone. He was the one who wanted to distance himself from them.
"Go inside already. I'll also be going now"
Jaycee nodded at him. He watched her enter their house, after that he started walking towards the direction of where that house resides. If it really were all up to him, he doesn't even want to go near it. Every time he sets foot on that place, or even by simply seeing that place, helps him to bring back such terrifying memories from his childhood. However, even if that was what he desires, he couldn't completely sever their ties. He knew why, but he refuse to acknowledge the reason. That's why all he could do is grit his teeth and endure it.
Glyde have his own keys to the house that's why he doesn't need to knock. He also always bring all of his keys just in case of emergencies. When Glyde enter the house, it was not yet locked. In fact, the lights were all still lit up.
"I'm back," he announced. Glyde was not anticipating any answers. In fact, he already have a low expectation from this family. But even if he already prepared himself, he was still disappointed at what he have came across after he just entered the house.
It was Yuan, his younger half-brother, that took notice of him first. "Older brother, you're back! Have you eaten dinner yet?"
Glyde ignored his question as he listened to the argument between his father and his step-mother which echoes throughout the house. His eyes went cold and Yuan knew his brother's temperance. Yuan avoided to look at his brother's eyes. His heart ache for his brother as this was the first time he have visited after 3 months yet this was the picture he would be arriving into.
Yuan wanted to give Glyde a reason for the situation, but Glyde just said : "I'll be at my room. Don't bother me. I'll greet your parents tomorrow morning before I leave."
He went upstairs and left Yuan there alone. Glyde locked himself on his room. In fact, he could just turn around and leave. He could just go back to his apartment. But since he was already there, he might as well see his parents. It was just that tonight was not the right time.
Even when Glyde shut the door, he could still hear his father's voice shouting at his woman. He can't help but sigh. He already knew that his father was no good. Glyde started hating his father when he first cheated on his mother, leading her to give up her own life. This made Glyde understood that a jerk will remain as a jerk. But, no matter what, his father's blood still flows through his vein. This was a fact in which he was helpless with. In the end, Glyde was still his father's son.
Glyde sat down on his bed as he vividly recalled his mother's death. In fact, her death couldn't be entirely blamed to his father. Glyde was aware that sooner or later his mom would die. It was just a matter of when. His mom had a disease in which her days was already numbered. Even so, she could've lived longer, if his father didn't add a pain on her heart. She could've still fought for her life. But the pain of seeing and hearing that her husband was cheating on her became more unbearable, which made her to decide to just end her suffering by killing herself.
Glyde closed his fist tightly. His hand trembled and his breathing becomes heavier. He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself down. He just remind himself that he wouldn't become like his father. He wouldn't condone or do adultery. He wouldn't let himself be swayed by temptation. He promised to himself and to his deceased mother that he would work hard in order to stabilize the family that he will soon create. He would make sure that his future family would have a proper and comfortable life. He would earn enough money to support his future family, and they wouldn't be treated unfairly.
When he opened his eyes, he walked towards his table. A computer he left behind was set-up there. He opened it and proceed to just finish some work, in order to distract himself from hearing those voices downstairs. Sure enough, when he started working he completely forgot about the people downstairs.
Glyde stretched his arms after hours of typing and clicking here and there. When he looked down, he saw his phone vibrating. His brows furrowed as he was confused who would call so late. But when he saw the name he became more confused.
"Hello?" he greeted as he answered the call.
The person on the other line excitedly exclaim, "Hello!"
This made him smile and laugh. "You're wide awake, I see. What's up?"
He was not really expecting her to call at such time, which made him quite worried. At the same time, it did made him put a genuine smile on his face after he was troubled earlier when he set his foot at the house. Hearing her voice put himself at ease.
"No. I just wondering if you would accompany me as well just like what I did with you, when you suddenly asked me for a dinner. I wasn't expecting myself to become your fake date just to deceive your friends, you know?"
After hearing her thoughts, he unconsciously just agreed. "Alright"
"What?"
He already agreed and he also doesn't intend to take it back. He directly said, "Let's have a date." However, Glyde didn't heard a response for a while which made him think if he misunderstood what she meant. "That's what you're trying to say, right?"
"Y-yes" she said in a soft voice, which made him chuckle. He found it cute.
They talked a little bit more about the date. This puts him in a good mood even after he woke up from his slumber. That is why it surprises Yuan when he saw that Glyde was not that cold towards him and Gray, Glyde's youngest half-brother. In fact, Glyde even returned Gray and Yuan's morning greeting.
"Where's your parents?" Glyde asked to Yuan.
"They're at the kitchen. Are you gonna join us for breakfast?" Yuan carefully asked back.
Glyde check the time on his watch before he shook his head. "I might be late to work. I'll just go and inform them that I was here before I leave"
Yuan felt saddened about this but he still understood. Gray and Yuan really wanted to become more closer to their older brother, but they just don't know how. Glyde didn't know about this nor does he have any current intentions to be loving older brother to them.
Yuan watched his older brother go to the kitchen to greet their parents and to also bid his goodbye. Yuan knew that it'll be another few months before he'll be able to see his brother. He couldn't do anything about it.
Glyde noticed that Gray and Yuan was observing him. He glanced at them before he said, "I'm leaving."
