[US] Chapter 13: Warden of Tomes

A week passed since Rober officially became the manager of Kalis Marry's bookshop. Under his skillful arrangement and scientific organization, the shop had undergone significant changes. The books were clearly categorized, the shelves were thoroughly cleaned, and the overall space became more airy and tidy.

Rober had also gradually become accustomed to the rhythm of life in the capital city of Edoras, and to his new job. He particularly enjoyed being exposed to a multitude of different books, from classic works to newly published ones, from books on science and technology to books on magic and the mystical.

And, not to mention, the relationship between Rober and the young librarian, Anne, had also become closer. Anne, with her lively, quick-witted, and somewhat childish personality, brought Rober laughter and moments of relaxation after stressful working hours.

And this morning, Rober woke up very early. He cleaned himself up, put on a simple but smart outfit, and then left the inn, walking to the bookstore. The weather in Edoras in the early morning was pleasant. The air was fresh and cool, and the soft golden rays of the sun filtered through the trees, casting down on the stone-paved streets, creating a truly peaceful scene.

Rober walked, looking at the streets. He took out a key ring from his coat pocket, the key ring that Kalis Marry had entrusted to him, so that he could open the shop every morning. He smiled, feeling satisfied that he had gained Kalis's trust.

When Rober approached the bookstore, he saw Anne from afar. She was running hastily towards the shop, a piece of bread in her mouth, seemingly because she didn't have time to eat breakfast at home.

Rober smiled, inserted the key into the lock, and opened the oak door. Just then, Anne arrived, panting.

"Good morning, Anne" Rober said, his tone a bit teasing.

"Good... good morning, Mr. Rober" Anne replied, between breaths.

"You don't need to rush like that" Rober said. "There's still an hour before opening time."

"But... but yesterday I heard..." Anne hesitated "...that a new shipment of books will arrive today. I wanted to come early to help you."

Rober smiled, feeling warmth in his heart at the girl's enthusiasm. He reached out and gently ruffled Anne's chestnut-brown hair, saying:

"Thank you, Anne."

Anne blushed, lowered her head, and mumbled "You're welcome."

The two of them entered the shop together. Rober took off his coat and hat, hanging them on the wooden coat rack for employees, located near the entrance. He adjusted his clothes slightly, making sure they were neat and tidy.

Meanwhile, Anne had quickly put on the white apron, embroidered with a quill and an inkwell, the uniform of the employees of Kalis Marry's bookshop. She stood in front of Rober, her eyes sparkling with a smile, showing off the small dimples on her cheeks.

Rober looked at Anne, unable to help but chuckle. He reached out and flicked her forehead lightly, then said:

"Alright, you mischievous girl. Today, we have a lot of work to do. I want you to sort the books that are less popular with customers, to make room for the new books that will be delivered."

Anne took the stack of papers, glanced through them, and then frowned, saying:

"But... but how do I know which books are popular and which are not?"

Immediately, Rober reached out and tapped Anne's head lightly with a thicker stack of papers. On it was a list of book titles, along with detailed notes on their popularity in the market, based on sales figures and the number of times they had been borrowed recently.

"Here" Rober said "I've prepared this for you. Just follow this list."

Anne pouted, showing her dissatisfaction, but still obediently took the papers.

"Hurry up" Rober said "the delivery service from the publishers will be here soon."

Anne was curious "Why are you buying more books, Mr. Rober? There are still books in the stockroom that Miss Marry bought before. She always told me, if a customer buys a book, just take one from the stockroom to fill the empty space."

Rober sighed. "That's precisely why the financial situation of this store is always in a 'red alert' state" he explained. "Old, outdated books that are no longer in line with readers' tastes can't just be left on the shelves. They take up space and make the store look cluttered and unattractive."

"But don't worry" he continued "those books won't be wasted. I've contacted a church nearby. They're taking care of many orphans, and they need books. I'll donate all those old books to them, instead of letting them sit in the stockroom, gathering dust."

"And" Rober emphasized "Miss Marry has already agreed to this plan. So you don't need to worry about anything."

Hearing Rober mention the orphanage, Anne's eyes suddenly lit up. She exclaimed:

"Really? Mr. Rober, when you go to donate the books, can I go with you?"

Rober smiled and replied indulgently "Alright, Anne. But on one condition..."

He paused for a moment, then continued, with a serious tone: "You have to learn how to move objects with magic, as I taught you a few days ago. If by then, you still can't do it, you'll have to stay home."

Anne's face fell, and she lamented "Oh, Mr. Rober... You know I don't have a talent for magic. How can I become proficient in just a few days? I'm not a genius..."

Previously, with Rober's help, Anne had discovered that she had the ability to use magic, something she had never thought of before. But, her ability was still very weak, and she needed a lot of practice to be able to use it proficiently.

Rober interrupted Anne's complaints, a somewhat mischievous smile on his face:

"If by the time we go to donate the books, you still can't move an object weighing more than two pounds with magic, then I'll tell Miss Marry your secret."

Anne, hearing this, shouted "No! Mr. Rober, you can't say it!"

She hurriedly ran to a corner of the room, picked up a crumpled piece of paper, and began to mutter the incantations that Rober had taught her, trying to concentrate her energy to move the paper.

Rober looked at Anne, unable to help but chuckle. He knew that she wouldn't give up easily. He returned to his work, starting to check the books, invoices, and preparing for the arrival of the new shipment of books.

The two of them, each with their own tasks, were busy with their work. Rober occasionally glanced at Anne, seeing her still diligently practicing, with a determined look on her face.

Time passed. Near noon, when the preparations were almost complete, Anne suddenly asked Rober:

"Mr. Rober, isn't Miss Marry coming to the shop today?"

Rober replied "She's busy today. Yesterday, she told me that she might not be free until late afternoon."

Just then, the wooden door of the shop burst open, and a middle-aged man, with a large, stout body and a red face, entered, panting heavily.

"Where's Marry?" The man shouted, his voice full of anger. "Go get her! I have something to say to her!"

Rober and Anne looked at each other, surprised. Rober stepped forward and politely asked:

"Sir, what's the matter? Miss Marry is not here at the moment. If you have any concerns, you can tell me. I'm the manager of this shop."

The man looked Rober up and down, with contempt. "Manager?" He snorted. "What does a kid like you know? I came here to see Marry, to demand an explanation about the medicine she advised me to take!"

"My son" he continued, his voice filled with worry "after taking the medicine according to Marry's advice, his condition hasn't improved at all. I have to see Marry, to ask her clearly!"

Rober tried to remain calm, saying "Sir, please calm down. There are other customers here."

But the man had no intention of calming down. He spoke louder and louder, even banging his hand on the table, making the displayed books shake.

Rober, having no other choice, offered to help. "Sir, if you don't mind, could I take a look at your son's condition? Maybe I can help."

Immediately, the man turned to Rober, shouting "You? What can you do? You're just a lowly commoner, with no knowledge of medicine. Do you think you can cure an illness that even the best doctors can't?"

The man's words immediately triggered the Sage System in Rober's mind. Information related to the man's son's illness began to appear in his mind.

"White Dream" Rober said, his tone firm. "Your son is trapped in a White Dream."

The man, hearing Rober speak, was stunned when both his tone and his eyes showed assurance.

"Are... are you serious?" The man asked, his voice trembling. "Do you have a way to save my son?"

Rober nodded. "I can try" he said. "But I need to go there in person, to assess the situation."

Just then, the door of the bookstore opened again, and Kalis Marry entered.

"What's all the commotion?" She asked, her voice somewhat stern.

At this point Rober turned back, explaining the situation to Kalis. The man also rushed over, begging Kalis for help.

Kalis, after hearing the story, nodded and said "Alright, let's go."
