[US] Chapter 40: The Encounter

As the last flame winked out in the blink of an eye, leaving behind a stunned silence and the acrid smell of burnt wood and scorched fabric, everyone in the main sanctuary of the temple finally let out a collective sigh of relief. They looked around, still somewhat dazed by the incident, and even more bewildered as to why the ferocious fire had so suddenly and strangely vanished. The priest and Phylas lowered their hands; Phylas's magical shield dissolved into the air, and the wind summoned by the priest ceased. They exchanged glances, their eyes clearly showing astonishment and confusion.

Just then, from the main entrance, a small, nimble figure dashed in. It was a young girl, perhaps only fifteen or sixteen years old, with chestnut-brown hair neatly braided and large, bright, lively eyes. She wore the simple attire of an apprentice disciple – a plain, ash-grey robe.

"Is... is anyone hurt?" the girl asked, her voice clear but tinged with panic and worry. She glanced around, assessing the situation.

The priest, hearing her voice and seeing her expression, instantly recognized the culprit behind the recent conflagration. Fury surged within him.

"It's you again!" he roared, his voice losing its usual solemn dignity, replaced entirely by irritation.

"You've only just become a disciple, and already you've caused so much trouble! Do you realize you just... nearly burned down this entire temple?"

He strode towards the girl, continuing his reprimand:

"What did I tell you? Be careful when using magic! Control your energy! How could you be so careless as to create such a massive fireball, and then be unable to control it?"

The girl lowered her head, fidgeting with the hem of her robe, and mumbled an apology:

"I... I'm sorry. I was only trying a little... I didn't expect it to be so strong."

She stood still, meekly listening to the priest's scolding, not daring to look up or argue back.

Rober stood to one side, observing the young girl. He couldn't help but feel curious and murmured, loud enough for Phylas to hear, "Unexpected... for such a young girl to possess such powerful magic."

Phylas, hearing Rober's comment, turned, smiled faintly, and whispered back, "Do you recall, last night I told you about a new girl disciple who just appeared at the temple, very talented but also quite mischievous, and had already caused quite a commotion?"

Rober nodded. He remembered the conversation at Demas Tavern the previous night.

Phylas confirmed:

"This is her. Only just became a disciple, yet she's quickly shown her exceptional abilities. I heard from the other priests that the girl has an innate gift for magic, especially elemental magic. It's just that her temperament is a bit... hyperactive and lacking restraint."

He sighed, adding, "But I share a question with the others in the temple. We don't know where this girl has been all this time, only to suddenly appear now with such extraordinary talent."

Last night, when Phylas mentioned this girl, Rober hadn't paid much attention. But now, hearing those words again and seeing the young girl before him, a thought suddenly flashed through his mind. A girl... appearing unexpectedly? Extraordinary talent? Could she be... someone like me? Another soul pulled into this dream?

Suddenly, the young girl, still being scolded by the priest, seemed to sense Rober's gaze upon her. She looked up, her eyes flicking towards him.

She looked at Rober curiously, and their eyes happened to meet.

Instantly, the girl's large, round eyes flew wide, her pupils dilating completely. The fearful, remorseful expression vanished entirely, replaced by utter astonishment, joy, and overwhelming excitement.

She gasped, her voice clear and full of delight:

"Met again!"

Then, completely ignoring the priest still standing beside her mid-reprimand, the girl shot towards Rober like a gust of wind.

She ran right up to him, grabbed both his hands tightly, and started pulling him away, her voice brimming with excitement:

"Let's go! Let's go! I have something to tell you!"

The priest, seeing the girl not only show no remorse but dare to run off right in front of him, shouted angrily, "You brat! Stop! Where do you think you're going? Don't cause any more trouble!"

But the girl paid no attention to the priest's words. She continued to pull Rober's hand, running towards a secluded corner outside.

Phylas, standing behind, watched the two of them go, unable to suppress a chuckle. He turned to the priest and said, "Come now, she's young and inexperienced; a little mischief is to be expected. Besides, no great harm was done. A scolding like that is sufficient."

Then, he turned and called out loudly to Rober, who was being dragged away:

"Hey, Linus! I must attend the communal rites! When the sun begins to set tomorrow, I'll have a carriage sent to wait at the front gate of the temple so we can attend the union ceremony of the princess and the hero together! Remember to be early!"

Rober, despite being pulled along unexpectedly, managed to turn his head and call back, "Yes! I understand, Phylas!" Then, he let the girl pull him away, disappearing into a hidden corner.

The priest stood there, watching them go, his face still flushed with anger. He turned to Phylas, sighed, and said, "My apologies, Phylas, for involving you in that recent trouble."

Phylas waved a hand dismissively.

"Not at all, not at all. It was a small matter."

Meanwhile, in a secluded corner far off, behind large stone columns and solemn statues, the young girl had dragged Rober there. She pushed him forcefully against a cold stone wall, then planted her hands on the wall on either side of him, blocking his way. The mischievous, excited look was completely gone, replaced by a serious, scrutinizing expression.

"Speak!" the girl commanded, her voice no longer clear and innocent, but deeper and somewhat sharp.

"What is your name?"

Rober, though slightly surprised by her abrupt change in attitude, tried to remain calm. He sensed this girl was not as simple as she appeared. He suspected she, like him, was someone from outside the dream. But, lacking certainty, he decided to proceed cautiously.

He stammered, "I... my name is Linus."

The girl smirked, a mocking expression.

"Linus?" she repeated. "You think you can fool me?"

She raised a hand, pointing to her left eye.

"Did you know?" she said.

"I still retained the ability of the 'Yin-Yang Eye' from outside the dream, right up until now. And I can clearly see that the souls of outsiders like us are completely different from the souls of the people inside this world."

She narrowed her eyes, looking directly into Rober's, and asked, "Surely you noticed the difference too?"

Rober was stunned.

"Yin-Yang Eye?"

He sighed, realizing he had been too careless. He conceded, "Alright... you win. I'm Rober."

He looked directly into the girl's eyes, continuing, "And I also guess that you are Kalis Marry, correct?"

This time, it was Kalis Marry, in the young girl's body, who looked surprised.

"Whoa... how did you know?" she asked, her voice filled with disbelief.

"In this dream, we were all put into random bodies, regardless of gender. How could you possibly recognize me?"

Rober smiled, explaining, "It's quite simple, Madam Marry. Because you are the only one capable of maintaining the 'Yin-Yang Eye' spell for such a long duration after being pulled into this dream. That proves your control over magical energy must be of a very high level, a master level. It could only be you, Madam Marry."

He continued, "The others in the search party are just ordinary people, borrowing power from the temporary ritual I performed. They could never sustain that magic for so long. Even I lack the ability to maintain the 'Yin-Yang Eye' on myself while inside the dream. So, besides you, who else could it be?"

Kalis Marry, hearing Rober's explanation, understood. She laughed, looking pleased and slightly narcissistic at being called a "master."

"Ah... so that's it" she said.

"Turns out because of my ability, I could maintain the spell to recognize your soul and the others from the search party, but they couldn't recognize me."

Rober nodded confirmation.

"Precisely. It was truly an oversight on my part not to think of using the 'Yin-Yang Eye' myself within this dream to differentiate the souls."

Suddenly, Rober caught something in Kalis Marry's words. He looked surprised, focusing on the phrase "others in the search party."

He quickly asked Kalis again, "Wait! Madam Marry, you just said you recognized others from the search party? Does that mean you've found them?"
