~Shota's POV~
Flashback:(Shota and Hizashi Age 24, Miki Age 10)
Hizashi and I finished rounding up some second-rate thugs that thought they could rob a convenience store we frequently stopped at on our way back to our apartment. We waited outside in the cool evening air. The full moon was masked by rain clouds and a cold drizzle trickled from above. I glanced up as I heard the approach of the police and saw their flashing lights reflecting off all the windows of the various closed shops on the street. There were three cars, that was odd, the dispatcher said they were only sending two since there were only four villains.
A young deputy exited the third car and raced toward us. He was white as a sheet and looked very distraught at whatever news he had to share. "Present Mic!"
Hizashi turned, "what up, listener?" He replied obnoxiously as the officers of the other vehicles began apprehending the criminals and reading them their rights.
The young deputy faltered a moment and bowed his head before continuing softly, "there was a fire..."
A cold chill ran down my spine.
Hizashi hadn't quite caught it, "did you need us to check it out? That's not really our thing but we could hel-."
"Um...no...Present Mic, your parent's house caught fire." The officer bowed his head again, "I'm very sorry but Mr. and Mrs. Yamada didn't make it."
Hizashi's eyes grew wide in disbelief. He lost all manner of his jovial rock and roll persona. "Miki? Is she okay?" His voice shook. The news had hit him like a ton of bricks, I could see his entire body trembling, threatening to fall him.
I took a step toward him and placed a hand on his shoulder giving him a comforting squeeze, trying to offer him support. The police officer nodded, "your sister is at the hospital now, I can give you a ride there, I don't have current updates on her condition but the last report I received said she was going to make a full recovery, I rushed here as soon as I could."
I could see him still trying to process everything and nodded politely to the young deputy. "Thank you. Let's go." I steered him toward the deputy's car. The other officers had overheard and let us go, I knew they'd get our statements later and was grateful they were giving us some space as I was afraid Hizashi might crumble at any moment. He was always so cool in a crisis but when it came to his family, he was a mess, especially when it came to his kid sister, Miki.
The deputy drove like a bat out of hell to the hospital with his lights flashing and siren blasting to get people out of his way. We got there in record time. Hizashi had fallen into a morose comatose state buried by the weight of the news the deputy had dropped on him. I managed to get a firm grip on his upper arm and drag him along, somehow keeping him upright. The deputy led us to the nurse's station. He exchanged a few quick words with the nurse. A look of sorrowful understanding crossed her face as she realized the situation.
She offered us a somber smile, "right this way." She got up from her desk and walked us to the intensive care unit. When she got to their nurse's station, she said a few hushed words to the nurse manning the desk there before giving Hizashi's free shoulder a reassuring squeeze, "I'm very sorry for your loss."
The new nurse, a man about our age offered us a similar somber smile. He left his desk and ushered us to a room across from the nurses' station. "The doctor overseeing Miki is confident she's going to make a full recovery." He tried to reassure Hizashi as if sensing he was one more piece of bad news away from a psychotic break.
"Th-that's good, right?" Hizashi asked me shakily.
"Sounds like it." I nodded.
"She's breathing on her own, the oxygen mask is just because she inhaled a lot of smoke and we want to make sure she's getting the cleanest purest oxygen she can, so don't be alarmed." The nurse said calmly as he stepped into the room.
My heart fell as I spotted a young girl of ten with long auburn tinged honey blonde hair and pale skin lying motionless on a hospital bed. There was an oxygen mask over her nose and mouth, a pulse oximeter on her left index finger and a blood pressure cuff affixed to her arm. There was an iv-drip providing her with fluid and a second one that appeared to have some kind of pain relief.
"Miki." Hizashi's voice broke and he sank into the chair next to her bed as if his body could no longer stand to hold him.
There were some bandages around her right hand and her feet. I frowned as I deduced, she'd probably awoken in the fire and had tried to get to her parents to save them before she'd either collapsed from smoke inhalation or something else. My heart clenched in my chest. Did she hear them die?
The nurse went to get the doctor who provided a thorough explanation of all her injuries. The most concerning was the smoke inhalation the second most concerning was a nasty abrasion that started at the back of her neck and spilled down to her right shoulder blade where some burning rubble must have fallen on her. Her right hand and the bottom of her feet were burned but the doctor was confident they'd heal up nicely and probably wouldn't scar. Because of how close the abrasion was to the brain stem and spinal cord the doctor wanted to do an MRI and a CAT scan once Miki was conscious to make sure there wasn't any brain damage.
After the doctor left there was a slew of people trying to stop by and talk to Hizashi, first the police showed up to report that the fire had been a result of arson. Molotov cocktails had been thrown through several windows, including Mr. and Mrs. Yamada's bedroom. They probably died quickly which was somewhat of a relief. I thought of little Miki scared alone and unable to call for help for fear her quirk would hurt someone. Her quirk was similar to her brother's but on a much more severe scale. Miki's voice if she ever used it, caused brain hemorrhaging, even at a whisper, if she screamed, it would be instant death for anyone who could hear her. As a result, Miki had become mute.
After the police officers left, organ donor representatives, social services and funeral people came flooding in. I finally got fed up with the stream of visitors and ran them all off. It could all wait. Hizashi needed to be alone to grieve and look after Miki.
Present (Shota and Hizashi Age 30, Miki Age 15)
Hizashi and I got home early, since it was the first day of a new year at UA, there wasn't much paperwork to do or homework to grade. I frowned as I noticed Grey, the grey housecat hadn't come to greet us as he usually did. We stepped into the apartment and I smiled as I spotted Miki sitting at the kitchen table already working on her homework. Grey was sitting atop the table in front of her occasionally swatting at her pencil as she scribbled things down in her workbook.
Grey managed to swat her pencil out of her hand and it clattered to the floor. Miki put her hands on her hips and fixed him with a stern look before cracking a smile.
"Miki-chan!" Hizashi yelled startling the poor girl causing her to jump and nearly topple out of her chair.
Miki turned her bright green eyes our way and her smile grew. Hizashi pulled her into a bone crushing hug as he did every time he greeted her, no matter how long they'd been apart even if it was a quick trip to the convenience store or a day at work, he greeted her as if he hadn't seen her in ages and it always made her smile.
"Miki-chan, Shota managed to make it through the entire first day without expelling anyone this year." Hizashi took a jab at me.
Miki let out a soft sigh and shook her head at her brother's crazy antics before offering me a smile and a meek wave in greeting though it was a little difficult as she was still trapped in the idiot's tight embrace.
"Hey, sister complex, release her before you hurt her." I sighed as I shut the door behind me and went to the kitchen to get started on dinner.
After washing my hands and getting out an assortment of ingredients, I sensed a presence behind me and turned to find Miki with a cute hello kitty apron over her school uniform. Her long auburn tinged honey golden hair, was pulled back in a neat ponytail. She offered me a shy smile.
"You want to help with dinner?" I asked her with a smile.
She nodded. I'd noticed she'd been trying to help out more around the house and had been taking on the role of sous chef whenever I made meals.
"Alright, wash your hands first." I continued gathering ingredients and supplies.
"Can I help too?" Hizashi bounded into the kitchen.
Miki tensed and I shot the loud mouth a scowl. The last time he'd tried to help out in the kitchen he'd started a fire that had triggered Miki's PTSD and sent her into a panic attack. "I'd like to avoid a house fire." I shot at him.
Hizashi retreated to the living room and kept throwing puppy dog looks our way from the sofa. Grey scampered into the kitchen and flopped down atop Miki's feet trying to get her attention. She tried to give him a stern look but he began swatting at the untied strings of her apron causing her to giggle soundlessly.
I kicked one of Grey's catnip toys out into the dining room and he scurried, slipping and sliding across the linoleum. Miki turned to me curiously as I grabbed the loose strings of her apron. A faint splash of color stained her cheeks as I stepped toward her so I could tie them behind her back so they'd be out of her way. When I finished, she took a step away from me and appeared to take a breath as if to compose herself before turning to me to await instruction. There was still a faint blush clinging to her pale cheeks.
"Are you feeling feverish?" I asked and reached out to feel her forehead. She shook her head and took another step back. She'd been acting strangely distant toward me of late, I chalked it up to teenage hormones and shrugged it off. "Alright."
With Miki's help, dinner was done in no time. She didn't like being near the stove as it was a gas stove but she liked helping with all the prep and plating. Her knife skills were impressive and she had a creative eye and always made pretty plates. All our meals looked like they came out of a restaurant.
We all sat down at the table together for dinner and Miki fed Grey his dinner beside the table so he could eat with us. It had been our tradition ever since Miki had come to stay with us. I'd been living with Hizashi since high school, I'd always thought it was convenient to have a roommate to share expenses. I'd been thinking about getting my own place when his parents died and he became responsible for Miki. I hadn't thought about moving out since then as I was convinced the idiot wouldn't be able to take care of Miki on his own.
"Miki-chan, how was your first day of school?" Hizashi turned to her with a smile.
Miki reached for her whiteboard but paused as I erased her quirk with my quirk. A faint blush spread across her cheeks and she replied in a soft sweet voice, "it was good, all my teachers are nice. How did your day go, Nii-chan?" Hizashi thought it would be best to send her to a high school for the deaf, she knew sign language and he thought she'd have an easier time making friends. We found out she'd been getting bullied in middle school because she didn't talk and while she tried to pretend it didn't bother her, we knew she was upset.
Hizashi smiled, "Miki-chan has the cutest voice." He swooned.
"Your sister complex is showing." I sighed.
Hizashi ignored me and rambled on about our day filling her in on useless boring nonsense. Miki listened with a smile not seeming bored at all with his drabble. Once Hizashi finished, Miki looked to me curiously. I activated my quirk so she could speak. Her cheeks reddened again and she smiled meekly.
"How was your day, Nii-san?" It was what she'd always called me, since she was very little. I'd spent a lot of my time at the Yamada House growing up. As annoying as Hizashi was, he'd been my best friend for as long as I could remember. The Yamada's had always been there for me and treated me like family.
I smiled back at her, "it was alright."
The three of us ate dinner, Hizashi rambled on at random. Miki listened to him intently, giggling silently to herself at his silly antics. I watched the siblings while trying to conceal a smile and ate in silence. After dinner, Miki insisted on doing the dishes and cleaning up. Hizashi and I went to the living room. I frowned as he grabbed the remote for the TV and began searching for something to watch. He landed on a horror movie and I frowned again.
"You sure that's a good idea?" I asked.
"Scary movies are fun." Hizashi grinned.
"What if it traumatizes Miki?" I mused.
"She has her fearless big brother to protect her." He beamed.
"Right, I don't see how this could possibly go wrong." I grumbled sarcastically.
Miki finished up the dishes and joined us on the sofa. She looked to the screen curiously before throwing an inquisitive glance in her brother's direction.
"Don't worry, Miki-chan, your big brother will keep you safe." Hizashi beamed as he draped his arm across her shoulders before starting the movie.
Halfway through the movie, the idiot was cowering behind the sofa. Miki looked thoroughly traumatized and was trying to tough it out and watch the movie through her fingers as she tried to cover her face with her hands. It was going to be a long night. After the movie, Miki retreated to her room to finish her homework. The idiot tried watching cartoons in an attempt to get the 'scary' things off his mind so he could sleep later.
Once bedtime rolled around, I went to check on Miki and sighed as I found her sitting at her desk with every light in her room on. She'd been successfully spooked by the movie. Sighing, I stepped into her room.
"It's a school night, you should go to bed soon." I said quietly trying not to startle her. She nearly fell out of her chair at the sound of my voice before an endearing blush claimed her cheeks as she was overcome with embarrassment. "You going to be okay?" I frowned and activated my quirk.
She nodded, "I'll be okay. Goodnight." Her voice was a little shaky, it concerned me.
"Alright, goodnight." I retreated to my bedroom across the hall only to scowl as I spotted Hizashi in my bed. "What the hell are you doing, idiot?"
"Oh...weird...this isn't my room, well since I'm here might as well stay." Hizashi replied in a shaky voice as he tried, and failed, to sound nonchalant.
"Get out." I growled.
"Your room is closer to Miki's; I should be here in case she gets scared and needs me." Hizashi was still trying to keep up the act that he hadn't freaked himself out with the horror movie.
"Your room, is literally right next to hers. Go to your own room." I prepared to rip him out of my bed but paused as I heard a soft knock at the door. Leaving the idiot alone, I answered the door to find Miki in her Hello Kitty pajamas, hugging a Hello Kitty plush in her arms. "Let me guess, you're too scared to sleep in your own room, too?" I sighed.
She bowed her head.
"You two are definitely related." I opened the door wider so she could come in, "and this is why you two shouldn't watch horror movies." I scolded them both as Miki shuffled into the room. She spotted her brother already on the bed and smiled. She scampered over to the bed.
"Miki-chan." Hizashi beamed and wrapped her in his arms, "were you scared too?"
Miki nodded.
"Shota too." Hizashi tried to sound like he was the brave one, "that's why I thought he'd sleep better if I was here to protect him."
"I'm sure she believes that." My voice dripped with sarcasm as I turned off the light causing Hizashi to let out a girlish yelp. I rolled my eyes and tried to find a space to lay down on my bed. "Goodnight you two." I sighed as I found a small sliver of mattress to claim thanks to Hizashi sprawling out and taking up most of the bed.
