Chapter Twelve
~Miki's POV~
After finals, I was looking forward to summer break, Shota invited me to join class 1A to their training camp over break since Hizashi was going to be away at a concert. I was excited for a change of scenery and to get to spend some time with my new friends. I was still unsuccessful in making friends with anyone in my class. Everyone hated that I was so close to the hero course teachers and students. Since most of my classmates had wanted to get into the hero course they mistakenly thought I was trying to weasel my way into the hero course but none of them were interested in waiting around for me to try to explain myself on my phone or with my whiteboard. When I got the highest score on our finals, that only seemed to make things worse.
My phone buzzed, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts as I lounged in my room. I glanced over and smiled as I saw a text in the groupchat I had with Yaoyorozu and Jiro .
Y: Miki, we're all going shopping together before the training camp! Want to come with us?"
I smiled at the text and quickly scampered out of my room to the living room. Hizashi and Shota were sitting on the couch. Shota was looking over some training plans he'd drafted up for each of his students, Hizashi was still in his pajamas eating cereal on the couch. They both looked up as I nervously approached.
"Miki-chan!" Hizashi beamed.
Shota activated his quirk and I felt a familiar sensation wash over me as he erased my quirk giving me the ability to speak freely without harming anyone. "Is it okay if I go to the mall with class 1A?" I asked nervously.
Hizashi looked worried and was about to automatically reject the idea but paused as he saw the hopeful look on my face, "...yeah...it's good for you to have friends who aren't your Nii-chan." He sniffled.
"What is wrong with you?" Shota sighed and rubbed his eyes. He glanced my way again, "do you need a ride?"
I sent off a quick text to Yaoyorozu and Jiro that I could go with them and received an immediate reply.
Y: We'll pick you up in twenty minutes.
I felt my quirk being erased and glanced back at Shota, "n-no Momo and Kyoka are going to pick me up."
He nodded and I hurriedly escaped to my room to get ready.
I changed into a pair of pastel green shorts and a pastel purple top with a fat grey cat chasing a pastel green ball of yarn. I brushed out my hair and pulled it up into a ponytail before grabbing one of my hello kitty purses. When I stepped back into the living room, Hizashi frowned.
I glanced down at my outfit curiously.
"It's too hot for her to wear a parka." Shota snapped at him as he caught on to our silent exchange.
I giggled quietly as Hizashi gave in with a sigh before getting up to wrap me in a hug.
"Make sure you stay with a buddy at all times, don't go anywhere on your own. Text me if you need anything at all, I'll be there in two minutes." He lifted me off my feet in a bone crushing hug.
"Sister complex, she can't breathe when you do that." Shota growled and rather than come to my rescue as he usually did, I felt him pick up my purse and watched him put some money inside.
I stomped my foot in an attempt to argue which made him chuckle as he zipped my purse back up and set it back down.
Hizashi reluctantly released me. "I'll walk you downstairs."
I paled, not wanting to be mortified by him at the moment and quickly shook my head.
Shota managed to convince him to let me go on my own and I waved farewell to them both before exiting the apartment. Once I got outside I felt the strangest sensation, like I was being watched and glanced around. I looked back up at the apartment and sighed as I saw Hizashi pressed against the window, Shota was standing with him but less dramatically. I put my head in my hand praying Yaoyorozu and Jiro wouldn't notice when they arrived.
A moment later a sleek black limo pulled up. The driver opened the door and Yaoyorozu and Jiro stepped out and offered me warm smiles. Jiro's eyes flicked upward and she shook her head, "you put up with a lot." She noted.
I giggled silently and followed them to the limo.
The limo let us out at the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall , it was huge! There were so many floors and shops of all kinds. I nervously followed Yaoyorozu and Jiro, afraid I'd get lost if I didn't stick close. This mall was one that definitely required a map.
"It's Miki!" Ashido cheered as the rest of class 1A spotted us.
I smiled shyly and waved at everyone before typing on my phone 'thanks for inviting me."
"Don't mention it! You're an honorary member of class 1A." Hagakure giggled and linked her invisible arm with mine causing me to giggle silently.
"I'm surprised Present Mic let you out of his sight." Ashido pointed. Even class 1A had noticed how clingy Hizashi had become since the incident in the alley where I'd activated my quirk to save Shota.
"He was glued to the window of their apartment watching us like a hawk as we picked her up." Jiro noted with a shake of her head causing the others to laugh.
Midoriya was mumbling like crazy about all the different shops that catered to different body types and quirks. I'd found out on the way over that this outing had been his idea for the class to get to do something together to bond. It was really sweet of him to get everyone together like this. I wished my classmates did things together...maybe they did and just excluded me.
"Woah! Aren't those UA students?!" A voice shouted in the crowd.
I jumped and quickly hid behind everyone else as some people approached talking excitedly about the Sports Festival. After the fans dispersed everyone began talking about what they were in search of and split up.
Jiro was on the hunt for a duffel bag and Yaoyorozu and I went to accompany her. After the first store we visited I glanced back at where we'd all met and spotted Midoriya off on his own. It had been his idea to get everyone together and somehow he ended up all by himself. I hurriedly typed up a message on my phone "I'm going to check on Midoriya I'll catch up in a bit."
Jiro and Yaoyorozu were busy looking at bags and didn't seem to notice. I made my way back down the stairs to our original meeting point. As I got to our meeting point I saw Midoriya with a young man wearing a bulky dark hoodie with the hood pulled up. It was much too hot for that. Midoriya's face looked uncomfortable.
I scrambled to get to them worried Midoriya was in danger. When I got within reach I noticed the man's hand around Midoriya's neck. Midoriya's bright green eyes grew wide as he spotted me, "Miki, stay bac-."
The man reached out and caught my wrist in his free hand holding it in a way that kept his middle finger elevated and not making contact. A silent gasp escaped me as he pulled me closer and released his grip on Midoriya.
"This works better, now you'll be more willing to have a chat with me." The hooded man smiled sinisterly as he draped an arm across my shoulders keeping his hand firmly on my wrist in a threatening manner. "Unless you want this girl to die."
My heart raced in my chest.
"Don't hurt her." Midoriya looked defeated but made no move to run or do anything rash.
"So long as you cooperate, I won't." The hooded man smirked before nodding over at some benches, "lets chat."
He dropped casually onto one of the benches, pulling me down beside him. I slowly reached for my phone with my free hand while he focused on Midoriya.
A pain unlike any other I'd ever felt exploded from the point where he made contact with my wrist and I clapped my free hand over my mouth to keep my voice from escaping me as a gasp ripped from my throat. I glanced down to see the skin on my wrist had broken away the moment he'd put his middle finger down revealing a layer of blood and sinew.
"Guess you really are mute." The hooded man smirked, raising his middle finger once more, "I'd advise against trying that again."
"Miki!" Midoriya yelped in panic. "Let her go."
"Better behave yourselves kids or I'll start slaughtering every sheep here." The hooded man hissed, tightening his hold on my wrist, urging another pain filled gasp from my lips.
My body trembled from the pain. I couldn't even focus on what Midoriya and the hooded man were saying. It was taking every ounce of willpower I had to keep myself conscious. As I looked down at the broken skin and the blood oozing beneath the villain's hand I noticed something. The pattern of the wound he left on me was similar to some of Shota's wounds after the attack on the USJ. Did this man hurt Shota?
As the hooded man began talking rapidly and manically his grip kept tightening on my wrist. I saw an image of Shota in the hospital covered head to toe in bandages. Another image of Shota after he was released from the hospital as I was changing his bandages, the scars with the matching pattern now adorning my wrist. This man had almost killed Shota.
I glanced over at the hooded man. Beneath the hood was unruly pale hair. He had dry cracked lips pulled into a maniacal twisted grin and bright red eyes. I felt something dark stir within me as I thought of Shota and the pain he'd been through because of this man. I opened my mouth to speak when a voice sounded from behind me.
"Deku, Miki? Is that a friend?" Uraraka stood a few paces away looking at the three of us warily. "No, that can't be right. Hey, let go of her." She looked at the bloody state of my wrist.
"We're fine." Midoriya yelped in a panic thinking the villain was going to hurt her too. "Stay back. No closer."
"Oh, you two were here with friends, oops I didn't know, sorry about that." The hooded man jumped to his feet with a smile before growling at Midoriya in a hushed tone, "if you follow me, I'll get angry." He walked away.
Uraraka raced over to us once he was away from us, "Miki, Deku." She stared in horror at the state of my wrist.
Midoriya threw a worried look down at me before glaring at the hooded man's retreating form, "hold on, Shigaraki."
Uraraka gasped and put herself between me and the hooded man, "Shigaraki?"
"I have a question too, what is All for One after?" Midoriya scowled, it was a strange look for him.
"Who knows, really." The hooded man shrugged before turning to look in my direction, "should probably get the mute some medical attention." He smirked before disappearing in the crowd.
Midoriya and Uraraka hurriedly called the authorities. In a matter of minutes I found myself being tended to by a very kind paramedic who thankfully knew sign language. The other students rushed to the scene once the police and medical personnel arrived. Yaoyorozu and Jiro joined me as I sat outside the ambulance being tended to.
I was still shaking, my wrist was in an immense amount of pain. There was a thick layer of bandages around my wrist stretching up to my elbow. Blood was already seeping through.
"MIKI!" I heard Shota's voice in the distance.
"MIKI-CHAN!" Hizashi screamed somewhere in the distance causing everyone around me to wince.
My heart skipped a beat before racing sporadically and I staggered to my feet and scanned the area for Shota.
He and Hizashi were running toward me. Shota was faster and reached me first, pulling me into a warm and welcome embrace that instantly quelled my trembling. I threw my arms around him, letting him lift me off my feet. Hizashi reached us a few seconds later, sandwiching me between them.
