Scene 3 Act 3
Scene 3, Act 3
The scene has changed to a brightly lit hospital room. The large window is opened partway to let in some sunlight.
Some flowers sit on the bedside table beside the bed. In the bed lies Evan sound asleep and connected to an IV.
On the chair beside his bedside sits Abbey. An exhausted and thoroughly concerned look is on her face. She is holding his hand and leaning forward, waiting for him to wake.
Evan's eyes open, but Abbey is in a daze so she barely notices.
Evan says: "Hey Abs! What am I doing in a hospital?"
Abbey's eyebrows instantly raise in surprise. She turns her head to face him to ensure that she is not dreaming.
On realizing that he is actually awake, Abbey gasps: "Oh my god, Evan!"
She climbs onto the bed to lay beside him and he hugs her close.
Evan says: "It's good to see you too! But what the hell happened to me?"
Abbey plants a kiss on his cheek and says: "Your parents have already been and gone! The doctors had to pump your stomach! I can't believe I almost lost you! They said something about a cocktail of drugs? Don't worry I told them that you don't do drugs... that someone must have spiked your drink or something. But what the hell happened at that party?"
Evan's face goes pale white as if he is remembering the night vividly. After a moment, he finally says: "I don't know! But why did you tell them that? The guys are going to kill me! The police are going to investigate them and this won't go down well, I just know it!"
Abbey sits back up and glares at him and says: "I'm sorry, but they are not my priority! I almost lost you. I don't even know what happened, what was I to say? It's not like you to do this. Hell, last night was the first party you have ever even been too... Well, besides the ones without clowns, face paint and kiddy games. So, I stand by my decision!"
Evan sighs. He is clearly taking in everything that she has just said. In his mind, he is silently praying that matters don't get anyworse.
Evan holds her hands and pulls her close as he says: "Okay, I'm sorry. Do you forgive me?"
Abbey leans forward and kisses him on the mouth quickly before she says: "Of course, I do!"
Abbey lays down beside him on top of the blankets and they continue to cuddle for a little while longer.
Unnoticed by Abbey and Evan, Sarah is standing in the doorway holding two takeaway cups of coffees.
There is a look of jealousy mixed with sadness on Sarah's face as she silently watches the two holding each other. While she is happy that her friends are happy, she can't shake that longing feeling that she holds for the person that she truly loves. But she would never do anything to mess up the happiness of her two best friends.
Sarah clears her throat and says: "Ahem! I bought you some coffee, Abbey. It's good to see you doing a lot better, Evan. Do you remember much? When we found you, you were laying in the middle of the road."
Abbey and Evan both sit up alongside one another to make room for Sarah.
Abbey thankfully takes the coffee from Sarah and mumbles: "Thanks!"
Instead of sitting beside them on the bed, Sarah takes the chair where Abbey had originally been sitting.
Abbey offers a sip of her coffee to Evan, who takes a big mouthful before handing it back.
Then Evan says: "I don't actually remember too much. I remember having a few drinks with the guys and that's about it! Did any of you happen to retrieve my phone?"
Abbey replies: "Yeah, I did. It's in my car. Did you want me to go and get it for you?
Evan says: "Nah, I might check it later. See if there are any photos in it to trigger my memory."
Abbey gets to her feet and takes a large mouthful of coffee before handing Evan what is left of it. She says: "I'm going to inform the nurses that you're awake. Then I'll call your parents."
She looks over at Sarah and says: "Would you mind waiting with him for a bit, to ensure he doesn't pass out again?"
Sarah says: "Sure!"
Before she can leave, Evan takes a hold of her hand pulling her in close to give her another kiss.
As Abbey kisses him, they don't notice Sarah shuffling uncomfortably in her seat.
Abbey leaves the room.
Sarah's eyes go from the door to Evan. She says sternly: "Okay, Evan... what the hell did you do?"
Evan looks at her uneasily and asks: "Why do you think I did something bad?"
Sarah says: "You were hanging out with Christian and Elijah! We found you passed out, overdosing on drugs! Abbey isn't stupid! Whatever you've done, she's going to find out! So just don't hurt her!"
Evan sighs and shakes his head softly. The look on his face is a giveaway that something happened at that party that he is very scared to admit to.
