chapter 3
~~~Fitz's POV~~~
"FITZROY AVERY VACKER!" Biana shouted as she bolted out of the house. "YOU DID NOT DO THAT TO SOPHIE! YOU KNOW THAT DARE WAS A JOKE!"
"Keefe said he triple dared me," whispered Fitz from behind his hand, "what did I just do?"
"I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU JUST DID! YOU BROKE MY BEST FRIEND'S HEART! YOU KNEW SHE LIKED YOU BUT NO! YOU HAD TO GO AND PLAY WITH HER FEELINGS!!!! WHAT ABOUT FOXFIRE? WHAT ABOUT YOUR CRUSH ON HER?" Biana continued to yell, but started to calm down. "I am going to Havenfield to check on Sophie, because someone took a DARE way too seriously." with that she turned on her heal and left.
(Fitz's thoughts (and transmitting) are in italics)
Why did I do that? I need to fix it. But how?
~~~Sophie's POV~~~
Biana came crashing into her room when Sophie didn't get up and answer the door. All she wanted to do was stay curled in her little ball with Iggy (dyed teal with black tiger stripes) and Ella. But Biana insisted. So much that she broke the door down with telekinesis.
"Sophie?" Biana whispered tenderly."Are you okay?"
"Nooooo," Sophie moaned from under her sheets.
"Well, my brother is an idiot."
That sentence caused Sophie to smile. But she would never tell anyone.
"Look, I know what Fitz said, actually, I yelled at him! So, when we go back to Foxfire I told him that he needs to get his act together. Actually, would you come over for dinner. And I have something special in mind," Biana grinned, wickedly.
"Would it just be me?"
"Nope," she was really grinning now, it looked like it hurt, "I'm going to plan a huge sleepover. It will be me, you, and Linh."
"Why Linh?" asked Sophie. "What it Fitz actually likes her?"
"Oh believe me, you should have seen his face after you ran out. And I've read his diary soo."
Sophie's face flushed red, "Fitz has a diary?"
Biana smirked, "Yep."
"You're spending too much time with Keefe."
Biana laughed, "Dinner's in three hours so let's get started!"
Biana went through Sophie's closet to find something suitable for her to wear to dinner. When she emerged from the back of Sophie's closet, she dramatically said, "Here you are Lady Sophie!"
Sophie turned and saw the dress Biana was holding up. And just wow.
As soon as Sophie had the dress on, she realized Biana's plan.
"And I'm assuming those are for my shoes," she said, gesturing at the heels Biana had picked out.
"Yep, and now I am going to do your hair-no buts!"
Soon, Sophie was ready for dinner with the Vackers and as Biana promised her multiple times, "Fitz stands no chance."
"Bye, Mom! Bye, Dad!" Sophie called as Biana yelled, "Everglen!" at the Leapmaster.
SOPHIE?
Fitz?
I'm so sorry for earlier- I didn't mean-
Fitz- I get it. I don't care anymore. See you at dinner.
Dinner? Wha-
Sophie severed their connection as Biana and Sophie walked through Everglen's massive gates.
"Ready?" asked Biana stopping at the door to the dinning room.
"As I'll ever be," replied Sophie and they walked into Everglen's dinning hall.
As soon as Alden and Della saw Sophie, they immediately looked at their son.
Sophie's heart was fluttering like crazy when Fitz's eyes met hers.
"Woah, I didn't know we were supposed to get dressed up," he finally said, while Biana smirked.
Biana led Sophie to the opposite end of the table from Fitz and immediately started talking about shopping and clothes and shoes.
Basically, Sophie tuned her out.
Fitz's crisply accented voice filled her head once again.
Wow, Sophie, you look great tonight.
Thanks.
About earlier-
Fitz, I'm here to talk to your parents and Biana. I'm done with you.
But-
No
Sophie-
NO
Before Sophie could push him out, he said three words that tipped her world upside down. In a good way.
I like you.
Sophie got through the rest of dinner without looking in his direction, but that ended towards the end of dinner when Linh came through the door, and of course Fitz was sitting in front of the door.
"Hey, Linh!" said Biana. "Over here!"
Linh walked across the room and snickered when she saw Sophie's dress.
"Fitz doesn't stand a chance, Sophie. You look awesome."
"Thank you," and of course her traitorous cheeks blushed.
Instead of eating dessert with the rest of the Vackers, Biana led Sophie and Linh to her room.
"Okay, Linh, what do you think of my handiwork?"
"Okay, it's a good thing I don't like Fitz anymore, because there's no way he's not head over heals right now."
Biana squealed and Sophie blushed.
"Okay, let's stop talking about my crush," Sophie had to stop talking for a second when Biana and Linh started making kissy faces, "and talk about your's."
That stopped the kissy faces.
"Oh- well I might as well say it," said Biana, "I don't like Keefe anymore."
Right as she said that, Fitz, Dex, Tam, and Keefe walked into the room.
"Woah, that's some pretty strong embarrassment Foster," he wiggled his eyebrows, "oohhh are you guys talking about crushes?"
Biana's cheeks turned an even darker red. "Did you hear anything?" asked Biana, suddenly nervous.
"Nope, but now we are," he plopped onto the ground next to Sophie and looked at her expectantly.
"Oh no. I already went," she said.
"Dang it," he looked at the other boys in the doorway, "we missed it."
"Fine whatever it was going to get out anyway," Biana gumbled, "I like Tam."
"No way," Tam breathed.
Biana continued to blush.
"I like you, too," Tam said.
"Cool."
"Cool."
Biana looked like she could just explode, "Who's next?" she asked.
"Well, that leaves me," said Linh.
"And the boys," Sophie added.
"Hey, Foster. I know you're dying to know who I like," Keefe said, putting his arm around Sophie, "but us guys would like to hear it from you, too."
Sophie groaned when all the boys nodded.
You can tell me telepathically if you want.
So you think I forgive you for that cruel joke?
No
Good.
The entire room was staring at Sophie and Fitz, so they knew what was going on.
"I like-" Linh continued, looking at Keefe, "Keefe." her voice sounded small.
"Cool, I like you too."
"Wow, is it just me or are things, like, miraculously working out?" asked Sophie.
"I know, right!" squealed Biana.
"Well, I like Sophie. You all knew that, though."
When the entire group nodded, Sophie felt shocked. She couldn't believe Fitz had admitted that in front of everyone. And now they were looking at her.
Sophie still didn't forgive him, but she said in reply, "I do too."
What followed was deafening silence as they took that in.
"Wow, am I glad nobody said me," Dex said, "'cause I like Marella."
"AWWW you guys would make such a great couple!" Biana just couldn't stop squealing since Tam put his arm around her shoulders.
"Welp. We all confessed, bye!" Sophie said, not looking at Fitz. She would forgive him, just not yet.
Bye
Bye.
"Kids," Della called, sounding worried, "the Counselors are here. Something about Matchmaking."
At those words the group froze. Sophie thought they might look like wax museum figures the way they were still.
Then, Sophie realized, and kicked herself for being so oblivious.
They were all frozen because of the confessions we just made. And matchmaking meant chooses.
That might not be.
Who.
They.
Said.
They.
Liked.
