Welcome to This Unknown Place
I looked at myself in the reflection of the glass.
Mud covered my pale skin, stained my clothes, and wetted my blonde hair. My peach lips and once bright green eyes where now dull and boring. I looked disgusting and felt like it too.
I looked over at Unicorn. The mysterious unicorn mask covered all her expressions. It was worn out within not even an hour of having it on. Her clothes were in the same state as mine, patched with mud. She had her hand tucked into her pockets as she looked down, noticing her filthiness.
"I'm gonna go in a freshen up in the restroom." She said as she walked to the door of this weird-ass restaurant that we didn't know existed.
I sighed.
You're probably wonder how the fuck we ended up in this random place, looking like hobos, and why we don't know what to do.
Neither do we.
It all started earlier today:
I walked into the airport, waiting for Unicorn. We've been friends for six years and this is the first time we're going to met in person. Her real name is Katherine but her tag is Unicorn.
Mine's Samantha, but I'm known as Narwhal.
We're YouTubers; everyone's dream job. My online name is Narwhal and Kat's is Unicorn. We both have around nine million subscribers and still counting. We play video games, some are single-player games such as I Am Bread or any horror game, but most the time we play multiplayer games like Call of Duty and Garry's Mod.
Anyway, she's sees my photos on Instagram and Snapchat, but I've never seen her. She's a masked gamer. We call through Skype and stuff, but we've never met in person. I know for a fact I'm looking for a Mexican and that's pretty much it.
I looked around a bit more when my phone dinged. I checked it and saw that she texted. She asked where I was and I told her near exit 21.
I put my phone back in my pocket and swayed back and forth while I waited. I kept looking around, but I was focusing on more of what my ears heard, not what my eyes saw. So far, no one familiar.
Suddenly, a scared voice asked, "Narwhal?"
I turned around and saw a girl around three inches shorter than me. She had black, fluffy hair, coco brown skin and soft brown eyes filled with hope and a bit of fear. She sounded kind of familiar, but I couldn't think why.
"Yes?" I asked with a smile. Maybe she was a fan.
"I-It's me." She stuttered.
That's when I realized I was talking to Katherine.
"Oh my god!" I screamed and hugged her, "I'm sorry I didn't recognize you! I heard your voice but I didn't really compare it to any in my mind!"
"Quite down!" She said looking around, "There might be fans here."
I smiled and shook my head, "Come on," I said and grab one of her bags, "it takes about an hour and a half to get from here to my house."
I soon heard her hustling behind me and not too long after she was right beside me.
"Why do you live so far from the airport?" She asked.
I shrugged, "I hate the city."
"The city or people?"
"Both."
She nodded, "Is that why you moved to Arkansas?"
I laughed, "Little bit."
We walked to my car and hopped in. I started the car and we started talking about nothing specific or important.
"Have you talked to the boys recently?" She suddenly asked, "I can't get ahold of any of them."
By boys, she means the "Banana Bud Squad," if you will. We play with them and are technically apart of this "squad" according to the fans.
The squad consists of 18 of people. VanossGaming (Evan), H2O Delirious, I AM WILDCAT (Tyler), Mini Ladd (Craig), BasicallyIDoWrk (Marcel), Moo Snuckel (Brock), Terroriser (Brian), CaRtOoNz (Luke), Ohmwrecker, BryceGames, Lui Calibre, Daithi De Nogla, BigJigglyPanda (Anthony), four0seven (Scotty), SilentDroidd (Arlan), SMii7y (Lucas), Kryoz (John), and us. (At least, that's the only 18 I play with)
The only reason we play with them is because I met Evan at E3 one year and he asked if I wouldn't mind playing with them. I, of course, said yes, but I asked if he wouldn't mind playing with Unicorn as well. We've never separated since. We've been playing with them for about two years now.
"Oh," I piped up, "I was going to ask you that! But no, I haven't talked to any of them lately."
"Do you think they're mad at us?" She asked.
"What did we do?" I asked.
She shrugged, "Your guess is as good as mine."
I sighed, "It's honestly starting to piss me off. I mean, we've been playing with them forever, why would they suddenly just stop talking to us?"
"You have to put into consideration that they haven't posted anything either." She said, "Nothing on YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, nor Snapchat. But, it's starting to scare me, more then piss me off."
"How so?"
"It's all of them, and it didn't happen all at once." She explained, "I understand breaks and vacations, but this is weird because they didn't talk, post, or inform us about it, let alone their fans."
I nodded, "You have a point, but what if they're just pulling a Lui?"
She shook her head, "Lui still posts on other social medias."
I shrugged, turning on my turn signal and turning out the airport, onto the highway. "I wish I could text one of them and ask, but I can't."
"What do you think happened?" She asked.
I took a sharp breath, "I honestly think something bad happened to them. Like someone targeted them or something, but that's a stretch and very unlikely to happen."
I glanced over at her just in time to see her look at me. "I was thinking the same. I mean, it's not impossible."
"It is for Delirious, SMii7y, and Ohm. Even Evan if you really think about it." I said, "Unless whoever took them or whatever, knew exactly where all of them lived, I don't think it's an option."
She sighed, "I just wish I knew. I mean, we're friends and for all of them to just suddenly stop talking...it just scares me."
I nodded, understanding considering we're in the same situation. However, I was more pissed than scared. Even if it wasn't their fault, I'm still pissed at whoever took them.
That's just me: I get pissed easily. I'm known to be worst than Marcel, Tyler, Anthony, Nogla, and Luke combined. I'm also very bossy and competitive. I can be nice, but where's the fun in that?
Unicorn was kind of the same, but more on the sarcastic side than the you-better-do-what-I-fucking-say-right-fucking-now-before-I-slit-your-throat side, like me. She's like Delirious' sister, but a little smarter. They act so much alike, it's not even funny.
We kept talking as I drove but my mind always went back to the guys. Of course I wouldn't say anything, but I was still thinking about it. It eventually got to the point where I needed to bring it up again.
I let her finish talking, then I said, "I know you probably don't want to talk about it, but I can't get the guys out of my head."
"Crush wise?" She joked.
I shot her a quick, playful glance and said, "You know that's not what I mean."
"Well they're all single now considering there girlfriends all left them." She joked.
"It was because they were tired of them not being around and the boy agreed." I said, "Plus, some of them are just taking a break, like Brock and Lauren."
"Weren't they engaged?"
"Exactly why they're taking a break; Brock's never around and I honestly wouldn't want a boyfriend like that, even if it was their job." I explained.
"True true." She said.
I glanced at her, "Why? Do you got eyes for someone?"
"That's not important." She laughed, but soon stopped, "I keep thinking about them too."
"We can't exactly call the police or anything because we literally have no proof that they were taken. I mean if th-"
"What if it happens to us?" Unicorn interrupted.
I stopped, "What do you mean?"
"I mean what if they were taken and you and I are next?" She said. She then shook her head and said, "I know it sounds stupid, but..." She sighed, not having anything to back her up.
I was silent, both of us were thinking of what to say next.
"The only other person who knows my address is the mail man and he's old as dust," I said, "I'm pretty sure we'll be fine."
She chuckled a bit. "I've got some candy in my van." She said in an old, creepy voice.
I laughed and joked with her. "I've got a real special package for ya." I said, kind of in the same voice.
We laughed as I kept driving. We never got bored just talking to each other. It was great; like talking to someone you trust and never get bored.
~
"You're only staying a week," I laughed as I took out the last bag from my car, "why the fuck do you have so many bags?"
She laughed, "Because I need to make sure I've got one for every limb I cut off of you."
I gave her a weird look and went, "Well goddamn."
We laughed as we walked to my porch and I unlocked the door, letting us both in.
My house wasn't the biggest, but in my opinion, it's pretty nice. I mean, it has three bedrooms, a very large kitchen, two bathrooms, and quite the front room. The outside's cool too. I have a small pond in the front of my house and the nicest view of the small forest behind me.
I put her stuff down and breathed, "The spare room is right down that hall."
She nodded and took her bags to the room. I took a deep breath and looked around my home.
"Hey," Unicorn yawned, poking her head in from the door, "I'm so jet lagged, I'm just going to go to bed."
I nodded in understanding and looked at the time: 11:07. "When you wake up, it'll be night time."
She shrugged, "I can barely keep my eyes open."
I laughed and waved, "Alright, goodnight."
She nodded and walked away. I walked to the kitchen so I could eat because I fucking love food.
I set my keys and phone down on the island in the middle and poked around my kitchen.
"...cause I'm delirious outta my mind! I-I'm delirious outta my mind...", my phone sang.
I quickly stopped what I was doing and turned to my phone. Sure enough, it said:
Delirious
I answered it and said, "Hello? Where the hell have you been?"
No one answered. I heard literally nothing.
"Helloooooo..." I said to the phone, starting to get upset at the fact he won't talk, "Delirious!"
Then, he hung up. I growled as I took the phone away from my ear. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and gritted my teeth, trying not to get upset.
"...on the wall, on the wall, who's really going to be the first to fall? Oh, oh no, not me...", my phone rang.
I opened my eyes and looked at it:
Marcel
Marcel is like my brother from another mother, so if you think I wasn't going to answer that, you're fucking insane.
"Marcel? Hello? Are you okay?" I asked the phone but the same results came in.
"Are you and Delirious messing with me? I swear to go-"
"Narwhal!" Unicorn screamed as she slid on her socks into the kitchen with her phone in her hands, "Look how fucking cool this ring looks!" She turned her phone and saw I was on the phone and said, "Who are you talking to?"
"Supposed to be Marcel, but he won't fucking talk!" I screamed the last part into the phone. Then it hung up again. I pulled my phone away from my ear and smashed on the table. "Why?" I screamed.
"Marcel called you?" Unicorn asked.
I nodded, "So did Delirious, but when I answered, they didn't say anything!"
She was about to say something when her phone started ringing, "...bacon pancakes, making bacon pancakes. I get some bacon and I put it in a pancake. Making pancakes..."
We looked at each other, then at her phone:
Scotty
I nodded at her, indicating that she should answer it. She took a deep breath and answered the phone. She put it up to her ear and said, "Hello?"
No answer.
"Scotty? Are you okay? What's going on?"
No answer. Soon she took the phone away from her ear and it showed that he hung up.
"What the fuck man!" I yelled.
"Okay, we need to clam down a bit." Unicorn said, "I'm pissed too, but I'm also worried. Whoever this is now has our damn numbers."
I widened my eyes, realizing she was right. "What are we going to d-"
"...it's the Mini Ladd. People have not fear, it's the Mini Ladd..."
Her phone rang yet again but I put my hand, signaling that I wanted to answer it. She hesitantly put it in my hand and I put my finger over my mouth to make sure she didn't make a noise. I answered it and just it on speaker, waiting for some kind of sound.
Nothing.
I was about to say something, but Unicorn shook her head, so I kept quite even though I wanted to scream at whoever this was.
We sat there in silence for about a minute when a thud was heard on the other line and then the beeping of the phone call ending.
The thud was distant, like their phone was on speaker and whoever it was automatically hung up. It didn't sound like a door slamming, but something rather heavy falling over.
"This can't be some prank." I finally concluded, "There was no noise and there was no way the guys would be able to pull that off."
Unicorn opened her mouth to say something, but both our phones interrupted her. We looked at them and mine said, "Evan" while hers said, "Bryce."
"On three." She said. I nodded and she started counting, "One...two...three!"
We pressed the answer button, then the speaker and waited. After few seconds, I pointed at her and mouthed, 'Say something.'
She nodded and said, "Hello?" Into her phone and it soon echoed out of mine.
I raised an eyebrow and stared at the phones. They soon both hung up and the same time and I looked at her.
"Are they together?" I asked.
She shrugged, "I don't see any reason for Bryce to fly to L.A."
I sighed, "This is hopeless. Our best luck is just to stop answering our phones."
She nodded and we put the phones on my island. They started to go off, but I walked out of the house so I didn't pay attention to the ringtones or names. Unicorn followed and I closed the door behind us.
"Wanna go for a walk?" I asked, "There's a trail right behind my house."
She nodded and sighed, "It might make me tired again because those phone calls-"
"Let's just forget about those." I said, "The more we talk about it, the more we're going to just to conclusions."
She nodded as we walked. She suddenly stopped and said, "We aren't wearing shoes."
I laughed, "It makes our nature walk more natural."
"Well your organic ass can step in shit, but I ain't about that life." She said as she walked back to the house.
I followed her and once we got our shoes on, the phones rang again. I ignored them and we headed back outside for our walk.
"So explain to me again why did you move out in the middle of nowhere, exactly?"
"Because deer are better that people." I said.
"Obviously," She chuckled, "but like, don't you get freaked out by the noises?"
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Like bears? I don't know." She laughed.
I shook my head, "I think I'm so used to it now and days so it doesn't bug me. It is annoying, however, when I try and mow or something and a dead animal is in the way."
"Ew." She gagged.
"Used to that too." I smirked. I looked at the scenery around us and smiled. "Plus the view is terrific." I added.
The midday sun was poking in between the leaves and branches of the trees, blind us with its gold light, warning us with its beauty that night is coming soon.
She nodded and looked around. "City life isn't like this. It's beautiful at times, but it could look gloomy too."
"That's how the forest is too." I said, "It may look pretty now, but just you wait."
She nodded and we continued to walk and talk about nothing overwhelming. Unicorn soon stopped and I turned to her.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
She point to her left, "What's down that path?"
I looked at the direction of her fingers to a path I've never seen before. It didn't look old nor reliably pleasing to walk on due to the many sticks, holes, and logs in the way, but it was obviously a path yet I've never seen it before.
I knotted my eyebrows and said, "I've never seen that before."
"How?" She asked.
I shrugged, "I've walked down this path over a million times and I've seriously never seen this attachment to it."
After a long pause, Unicorn said, "We should go down it."
"Are you crazy?" I asked, "I'm white! I'm going to trip over something and die!"
"I'm brown, if anyone's going to die first it'd be me. Let's go." She said and started walking down the path.
I looked around with a very confused expression, like people were watching our conversation, and soon looked back at her and yelled, "That's a horror movie stereotype for black people!"
"I'm close enough!" She yelled back.
I laughed and ran to join her. I mean, it's a path, we can turn back anytime. Maybe I just always over looked it, but it was a relatively large path. Freaked me out a little considering I've lived here for eight years and walked this path about everyday and literally just now seeing this extra trail.
I finally caught up to her at a log that covered the path. We stepped over it and continued, but something was really off about this. The sunset soon disappeared behind the trees, but there was still an ominous light. Like the sun was shining behind the clouds.
Not only that, but everything started to get more dead. The trees were loosing leaves, covering the path that we were walking on, making us soon loose our sense of direction, but we didn't stop moving.
"Unicorn," I said, "I have no idea where the hell we are."
"You wanna turn back?" She asked.
I turned around, expecting to see where we came from, but seeing absolutely no sign of a path anywhere. In fact, it seems like trees grew over the path we walked.
"Um...where exactly is back?" I said making her turn and be as confused as I was. "How many turns did we take?" I asked.
"None." She answered, "The path was just a straight line."
"Then where the hell did those trees come from?" I asked.
We were both quiet for a moment and heard an owl hoot. Unicorn jumped at the sudden noise while I just raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't know owls lived in Arkansas." She breathed.
I looked into her brown eyes and said, "It's very rare and I've never, ever heard an owl until now."
She suddenly had a worried look on her face, "Narwhal, we have to turn back. I don't want to die."
I hushed her, "We aren't going to die! All we need to do is back track and you said the path was straight so all we got to do it turn our happy-little asses around and walk straight."
I turned on my heels and started walking. I got two feet and stopped, realizing I didn't know which way we came from. Everywhere looked the same with trees in the way a weird fog.
"You don't remember which way we came from, do you?" Unicorn asked.
I turned to her, "Do you?"
She looked around, thinking she knew but soon loosing her confidence about her sense of direction.
I sighed, "Okay, so we're lost, don't have our phones, and might get killed by an owl."
"Best vacation ever." Unicorn groaned as she sat on a nearby log.
"Maybe if we keep going we'll find a cabin or something." I said, "I mean, the trail's got to lead to something."
"Yeah, but which way is the trail?" She said, motioning around her.
I nodded once, "Fair point, but let's just keep moving and see what happens."
She rolled her eyes as she stood up, "White people."
She started walking and I yelled, "It was your idea to go on the damn path in the first place!"
"Shut up and move." She yelled back.
I rolled my eyes and joined her. We didn't talk or so anything besides walk. I let a small sigh escape my lips as I looked around. I stopped dead in my tracks and stared at what I thought was the last thing I'd see in my life.
Unicorn noticed and turned, "What's wrong?"
I pointed to the branch with a small owl on it. It had big, yellow eyes and light and dark brown feathers mixed with some white all over its body.
She gasped, "Look how cute it is!"
She was going to get closer, but I stopped her. "Unicorn, that's a baby owl. Owls are very viscous animals and we don't want to mess with it."
"But it's a baby!" She protested, "How badly could it hurt us?"
"Not too badly, but may I remind you that when there's a baby, there's a mama, and I don't want to deal with a mama owl." I explained.
She looked around, "Mama's not around."
I rolled my eyes and said, "Sure, go touch the owlet and get mauled to death by the parent."
I looked at her and she had confusion written all over her face.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Doesn't the pattern of the owl remind you of something?" She asked.
I looked at it again and saw the resemblance of the owlet's face to a certain owl boy I know.
I laughed, "It looks like Evan's owl mask."
"It's the baby from that one animation." Unicorn added, giggling at the thought.
We laughed but soon stopped when we heard a low, loud screech that could burst eardrums. I covered my ears and looked up, waiting for the beast to come out and instead a large owl landed in front of me and stared me dead in the eyes. I gasped and stood up straight.
It looked exactly like the baby, but ten times scarier and angrier.
"Narwhal, what do we do?" Unicorn whispered to me.
"I don't know."
"Do we run? Can we shoo it away?"
"I don't know."
It walked forward and I thought I was going to pass out. I was so scared because I've seen what owls do to their pray and I really don't want to be the next thing this owl eats.
It hooed at me and I swear to god it smiled. I knotted my eyebrows as if waddled to me and rubbed its head against my leg.
"I thought you said they were vicious?" Unicorn asked.
"I thought they were." I said, "I've never seen a owl be nice."
"Why does it like you so much?" She laughed.
I shrugged, "I don't know." The owl looked up at me with its golden eyes and soon went back to rubbing on my leg. "I'm owl-friendly I guess."
"That is adorable." Unicorn chuckled.
I heard something and looked up, looking around. Unicorn must've heard it too because she was doing the same as me.
We looked at each other and at the same time we said, "That was a car!"
I looked at the owl and moved my leg a bit, but it just followed. "Unicorn, this owl isn't going to let me leave."
She looked at it and said, "Looks like you've got a new friend."
I sighed and looked at her and widened my eyes, "What the fuck is on your head?"
She was warring one of those weird unicorn masks that look like the horse masks, just white and with a horn. She grabbed it and tried to pull it off, but it clearly wasn't coming off any time soon.
"It's stuck! Oh my god! I don't know that to do! I didn't even know this was on me!" She screamed, "Narwhal, get it off! Get it off!"
I looked at the owl and gently pushed it away, earning a very sad look. "Sorry." I told it and soon accompanied my troubled friend in the mask. "Alright, hold still."
I grabbed it by the ears and started pulling, but all I did was make my hands slip off it, hit myself in the face and fall back into a thing of mud. I looked up and saw Unicorn was in the same position as me.
"Shit!" I cursed and stood back up, "I don't know what to tell you, Unicorn, but you're officially a unicorn."
She stood up and groaned, "What the fuck is going on?"
"Let's just go to where the car came from and work from there." I said and tried to brush myself off, only getting me messier.
She did the same and I just shook my head. I soon felt a familiar rubbing on my leg and looked at the owl.
"What are you going to do with that?" Unicorn asked.
I shrugged, "I'm going to have to leave it here."
"Why did you call her an it?" She asked.
"How do you know it's a her?" I replied.
Unicorn shrugged and we looked at the owl.
"Hoo once for girl, twice for boy." Unicorn said to it.
It hooed twice.
The fucking owl hooed twice.
"He understands us?" I questioned.
It got even weirder when he nodded.
I slowly turned to Unicorn and said, "I honestly don't know what's going on right now, and I've been sober my whole life, and if I'm on some kind of drug right now, I will kill you."
"Why me?"
"Because you're the last person in my house."
She gave me a you're-an-absolute-idiot face and we looked back at the owl, rubbing it's really soft feathers across my leg.
"Okay buddy," I told it, "I've got to go so you need to stop."
It gave me the saddest look I've ever seen and it literally broke my heart within one second.
"He's crying." Unicorn said then hit me, "How could you!"
"I-I...Do you want to get home or not?" I told her.
"But look at him!" She said pointing to the bird.
I looked and it wasn't cute at all because this damn owl had tears running down his face and snot bubbling from his nose; it looks like I just murdered his baby in front of him. I sighed and took off my black hat, putting it in front of the owl.
"If you miss me, just put on the hat and it'll be like you're rubbing my leg again." I told him.
I didn't get to see his reaction because Unicorn and I quickly jogged to the area we heard the car. As we got closer, more cars were heard and we soon were in front of a fast food place that neither of us were aware even existed.
"Narwhal," Unicorn said, snapping me out of my flash back, "come on, you look like shit."
I nodded and walked into the mysterious place with her and was shocked to see who was behind the counter.
The fans made this thing for BBS where they're the opposite and it's called P2!BBS. Well the most famous character from that little fanatic was P2!Wildcat.
"Welcome to Happy Burger." He said sheepishly.
