Chapter 15 - Dukes and Bowls
Kate's PoV:
I finished baking the two apple pies as Grandma started to make lunch.
"You have a lot of visitor Gramma"
"I do, it's a busy day"
"Do you want help putting on the table"
"No, darling. I want you to have lunch with us." She suggested as she did her famous mashed potatoes
"No, thank you Gramma but I need to go back to the hotel"
"Why do you have company"
"Yes, I have a friend, Sarah"
"Bring her too"
"No she is sleeping, the first experience at a pub was hard for her" I explained as Gramma laughed
"Well then you eat here"
"No, Gramma. I will come by to have some tea with you" I told her as I recalled she loved a good tea company.
"Oh you know I can't refuse that"
"Gramma, I'm home! They are coming" We heard a manly voice shout as soon as he stepped inside
"Alright!" She yelled back "So demanding, I took care of him now he is like this" she rambled on
"I should go" I told Gramma as I tried to take the apron off, not wanting to face Jackson
"Gramma is lunch ready?" Jackson asked, I heard his steps getting closer and I just turned around so he couldn't see my face and not recognize me.
"What am I your maid?"
"Oh are you sullk- What are you doing here?" he asked his voice closer amd I just looked into the window hoping he was not talking about me but through the reflection of the window glass I could see him looking at my back.
"She is in my house, what's the problem?" She asked almost yelling at him, I turned slowly facing Gramma
"I was just leaving" I said taking off the apron but a high pitched voice interrupted me
"Oh my, who is this pretty face? Is she the new help? I told you grannie needed help to make lunch for us" The blonde girl said, we had met earlier today but she doesn't recall
"Oh I know you we met earlier. I thought you were a guest at the hotel turns out you were a employee. You know you can't use the guest bathroom right?"
"I am-"
"She is a friend of the family" Gramma explained "She is no employee" She said angrily as she grabbed my apron and took it off
"A friend? Why don't I know you then?"
"We have known her since she was 5 "Grampa said walking into the kitchen too and placing some eggs on the kitchen isle
"Oh, well then it's a pleasure to meet. Any friend of my fiancee is a friend of mine" She said extending her hand so I could shake it, she was really tall, if she was wearing high heels she would probably be taller than Jackson "I am Lady Charlotte Cavendish"
"Katherine Miller" I shook her hand while forcing a smile
"Oh this is great right honey? You can invite more people on your side to participate in the events of this week" I looked at both of them trying to understand what she was talking about but whatever involved the wedding was not on my bingo card.
"I don't think she has time for-"
"Right, I was just planning to relax this week" I cut him off
"oh but it will be relaxing and fun. We will do some horse races, cricket and bingo tournaments and some other things" Charlotte mentioned excitedly, or should I say, Lady Charlotte
"She is on vacation" Jackson imposed, wow he really didn't want me there too
"She is going, she is very competitive and very good at cricket" Gramma said in my behalf
"I don't think so Gramma she doesn't want -"
"Can my friend come to?" I asked not really liking how she kept me from not going
"Of course the more the merrier, it's going to be so fun" Charlotte squealed
"Fine, maybe I'll join"
"See how great is that?" Charlotte smiled at Jackson as his eyes kept penetrating my soul
"Great" he mumbled
"Honestly the wedding is so chaotic, there's so much to organize and plan but having another member to have some fun at our family games is just a plus"
I smiled at her enthusiasm " I bet it's not easy"
"At all" she commented
"You must know that very well right?" Jackson asked making my eyebrows frown
"Why is that?" Charlotte asked him
"She got married not long ago so she must know all about it" he spat rather angrily as if this was a competition, Charlotte squealed happy to have found someone to help her while Gramma gasped trying to know who I had married.
I looked him in the eyes with anger but most of all hurt, that was not his place to tell them that. I presumed he knew since Christopher couldn't handle a secret and not tell Jackson, but honestly, he had no right to just say it, and on top of all saying it like that.
"I so need you for the wedding then, I have a wedding organization dealing with the wedding but honestly having some near my age and married not that long ago is the best help ever" Charlotte squeled holding my hand and bringing me to the kitchen aisle so we could both sit on the high benches "Tell me everything, where did you marry, what was the menu, what was the first dance song oh- when was it?" she asked excited
"Well uh- almost three weeks ago?" I said recalling that moment, I looked up catching my gramma's eyes, she seemed sad too, maybe because I didn't tell her or because I didn't invite her. Gosh, I am really stupid, how could I not have invited this important person to my wedding just because of Jackson, well- almost wedding.
"No time for chitty-chats, It's time to eat" Gramma said quickly interrupting us and ordering them to take the food to the table, while I sat there at the kitchen aisle.
I heard more people arriving and getting together at the dining room, while I just tried to catch my breath.
"Have some rest if you need to" Gramma said, approaching me and holding my hand "Don't push yourself too much" And there, with those words, even though she didn't know what had happened I felt some comfort for the first time
"Look who you are talking too" Grampa said getting in the kitchen and grabbing my shoulders while shaking me to wake up almost "This woman was the same girl that never gave up a fight even if she knew she was losing" he said making me snort just thinking about those moments
"Yeah I know, then she would run back home saying only some Lemon Meringue Pie would heal her" Gramma said with a smile " I know that girl, do you know that girl?"
"I think she got a bit lost in the midst of adulthood" I joked but it wasn't a joke at all, I changed so much when in the last years, just like Sarah said it was like I got soft. In my early years in college if I believed my job was right and deserved a better grade, I was crazy enough to confront my teacher and make him explain why he didn't grade me higher. Today if some brand doesn't like my job and asks for a redo I simply do it.
"What a lie, she is still there" Grampa said "Look at your Gramma, she is still shinning just like day I met her when she was 18, and inside she is still that rebellious and bossy 18 year old girl I love" he said kissing her cheek making me smile
"Aw how sweet" I smiled watching they're cute interactions
"C'mon let's eat, the fancy people are there aren't they?"
"Yes they are" Grampa responded as I tried to catch up
"Fancy people"
"You can only call them Duke and Duchess, they came with bodyguards and they need a bowl for their fingers too" Gramma said lifting up a tray with water bowls
"For what?" I questioned almost laughing
"Cleaning the fingers" My Gramma said while doing the movement with her hands
"What matters is that they are a happy couple"Grampa said as I nodded
"No, what matters is if they love each other. Happy everybody is with a dog or a car" She explained leaving with the bowls
"Look at that temper of hers" Grampa mumbled as we both left the kitchen to the dinning room "Good evening everyone, this is one of my granddaughters not by blood but by heart, she will be joined us today" Grampa said in a very formal way almost making me laugh
Gramma pointed to chair next to her and Martha so I could sit down but first a very happy man hugged me by surprise
"Oh you are so big" James said taking a look at me "I still remember when she tried to do braids to herself to do then on the horses" he laughed making me smile. James was Martha husband and Jackson's dad. I have this image of him when I was young, of him being a very hard working man just like my dad maybe that's why they used to get along so well. "How's everything at home? Michael and Anna? "
"My parents are fine thanks" I smiled
"God, I don't see them in ages. I need to meet up with your dad have some red wines we will love" He told me
"I will make sure to tell him"
"She is so big right?" he whispered to Martha as he sat down
"She is" She agreed looking at me
"Well, maybe we should introduce ourselves" the man sitting in a blue suit said, next to him was a very elegant woman in a bright pink dress, so these are Charlotte's parents "Duke and Duchess Cavendish, Lady Charlotte's parents.
"Pleasure to meet you, I am Katherine Miller"
"Katherine married three weeks ago so she can help me with some last wedding details" Charlotte said clapping her hands
"Oh I see, are you from here?" Duchess Cavendish asked with a very imposing posture that scared me, was I doing something wrong?
"No, I am from the United States"
"Right, are you on your honeymoon?"
"Uh no"
"So did you travel with your husband?" What is this inquiry?
"With a friend of mine"
"A boy?"
"A woman"
"Hm, are you planning on having children?"
"I don't know yet?"
"Well you should, you are not young forever"
"I have told Charlotte that infinite times, good thing she is marrying at respectful age. How old are?"ok now that's passing the limits
"Why? so you can see if I married at a respectful age?" I questioned making my Gramma snort and James cough
"I beg your pardon?"
"We should talk about the games right, Charlotte?" Jackson asked quickly
"Oh right we still need to order them. I know you are very excited for the horse ride Papa, do you want to do that first?" Charlotte questioned
"Sure, but the field must have the perfect conditions for it, I am not racing with uneven, poorly drained surface, youalsp have to take in account the weather Charlotte, you know it can be too sunny, it needs to be perfect." the duke spoke as they put their fingers into the bowl... To wash them I believe, to they not know the amazing construction of a sink?
"Mr. Walker will be in charge of that right? Or should I say Father? " Charlotte laughed politely while placing a hand over her mouth, this is really weird I was not hoping this would be Jackson type at all, guess I was wrong.
"Sure yeah, I will have to look into that"
"Oh and we need to bring our lugagges to here, everyone else is staying at the hotel but we are staying here right?" Charlotte asked looking at Jackson
"Yes" he responded but his Gramma cut him off shortly
"Oh I'm sorry, but you can't stay here! I am sure Martha can find you the best suited in the hotel"
"But gramma we agreed that Charlotte and her parents would stay"
"Yes but I forgot to mention that I don't have more rooms"
"You have 2 availabe rooms" he mentioned looking at his grandmother confused
"They are occupied my granddaughter and her friend, right John dear?"
"Oh yes my love, we haven't seen her in so long we wanted her close, plus I believe you will have much better treatment there"
"We have the spa always open!" Martha mentioned with a smile
"Oh but then I am going to be miles away from you" Charlotte mentioned look I g at Jackson with a puppy face
"Well this actually a good thing darling, being in separate rooms at separate houses, you wont step on the mistake of being lured into each others presence. This will help keeping the tradition " the duchess said and I couldn't help but try to hide my laugh at their tradition.
However this is not what I had planned at all for this weekend to be. As I try to get away from the idea of weddings and being engaged and Anthony it's like everything keeps coming back and doesn't let me breathe.
Can I really handle this wedding week?
