CHAPTER 23

The Royal Clash Cup had begun. It wasn’t just a competition, it was a war of intellect, a test of skill, a fight for dominance. The grand hall at Royal Heights High was buzzing with energy as students from both RHH and Crystal Gem Academy prepared for the first round of the competition: the Debate Royale.

The rules were simple. Each student from RHH would face off against a student from CGA in individual debates. No team strategy, no collaboration. It was all about the individual's ability to think on their feet, present a solid argument, and convince the judges. The stakes were high, and every participant knew that the outcome of this round could change everything.

Aurelina stood at the front of the hall, her eyes sharp as she scanned the room. Everything was in order. The audience had settled into their seats, and the judges were ready. Her heart was steady, her posture perfect. She had made sure RHH’s team was prepared. But there was something different in the air today, a tension that couldn’t be ignored.

Aurelina’s eyes flickered toward Zhiyong. He stood near the side of the room, arms crossed, looking every bit the poised competitor he was. He had his game face on, his focus unwavering. But Aurelina knew better than to think he wasn’t just as affected by the pressure as everyone else.

The lights dimmed slightly, and the first pair of competitors took the stage.

Kaylila vs. Zhiyong.

The crowd stirred as the two students took their positions. Kaylila stood confidently at the podium, her posture composed, her gaze scanning the audience. She was no stranger to the spotlight, and her calmness in the face of competition was almost unnerving. Across from her, Zhiyong had his arms loosely crossed, his expression unreadable. He was the first to speak.

The topic: “Is technology advancing too quickly for society to keep up?”

Zhiyong’s voice was smooth and deliberate. He wasted no time getting into the heart of his argument, discussing the rapid pace of technological innovation and the potential dangers of society’s inability to adapt. He cited examples of technological advancements that had disrupted entire industries, and warned of the ethical implications of progress moving faster than human comprehension.

Kaylila listened intently, her eyes never leaving him as he spoke. When it was her turn, she stepped forward, a slight smile playing at the edges of her lips. Her approach was different less about the speed of technology and more about its impact on humanity. She argued that society was not only keeping up, but evolving alongside technology, showing how human resilience and adaptability had always allowed people to overcome challenges. Her examples were grounded in real-world applications, and she spoke with a quiet passion that made the audience lean in.

The debate was intense, but Kaylila’s calm and measured approach seemed to have the edge. Zhiyong gave a small, acknowledging nod when she finished, a sign of respect. The judges deliberated quickly, and though it was a close call, Kaylila was announced as the winner.

Skye vs. Esosa.

Next came Skye, who was more than ready to prove herself. She faced Esosa, a fierce debater from RHH who had always carried an air of confidence. The topic was “Is the media’s portrayal of beauty standards damaging to society?”

Esosa dove straight into the conversation, discussing the pressure placed on individuals by societal beauty standards and how the media often distorted these ideals. She cited studies, used statistics, and spoke with the authority of someone who had spent years analyzing the subject. Skye, however, wasn’t intimidated.

She started by challenging the assumptions behind the question itself. She argued that beauty was subjective and that the media’s portrayal of beauty was not the problem—rather, it was society’s narrow view of what beauty should be. Skye spoke with passion, drawing on her own experiences to illustrate her point. She wasn’t just delivering facts—she was telling a story, one that connected with the audience on a deeper level.

Esosa’s arguments were solid, but Skye’s personal connection to the topic gave her the edge. When the judges made their decision, it was clear—Skye had won.

Norrell vs.Jay

Norrell was up next, facing Nneoma, a formidable opponent who had never been afraid to speak her mind. The topic for their debate was “Should schools implement more mental health awareness programs?”

Norrell spoke first, discussing the growing mental health crisis and the importance of schools taking responsibility for the well-being of their students. His arguments were logical, well-researched, and compelling. He spoke with a calm authority that drew the audience in.

But Jay was not to be outdone. She argued that while mental health was important, schools were not equipped to handle such sensitive issues and that resources would be better spent on improving the overall learning environment. She questioned whether adding mental health programs would take away from the core educational mission of schools.

The debate was fierce, with both competitors presenting valid points. In the end, though, Norrell’s ability to connect the issue of mental health to education itself won him the debate. The judges announced him as the winner, and though Nneoma looked disappointed, there was respect in her eyes.

Tolani vs. Cammie.

Finally, the last match of the morning arrived. Tolani, a quiet yet strong debater, faced Cammie, whose charisma was only matched by her sharp wit. The topic: “Is social media a force for good or evil?”

Cammie took the lead, arguing that social media was a tool for connection and change, one that allowed marginalized voices to be heard and ideas to spread faster than ever before. She spoke about movements that had started on social media and how it had given people a platform.

Tolani, however, took a different approach. She acknowledged the power of social media but highlighted the negative aspects—how it could foster addiction, bullying, and misinformation. She argued that while social media had its merits, its drawbacks often outweighed the benefits.

The debate was lively, with the audience reacting to the points made by both sides. In the end, Tolani’s solid reasoning and calm demeanor earned her the win. Cammie looked surprised, but there was no bitterness in her eyes only the acknowledgment of a well-fought battle.

As the final results were announced, the crowd erupted in applause. The individual debates had been intense, but there was a sense of mutual respect in the air. The first round of the Royal Clash Cup had shown just how strong the students from both schools were. The competition was only just beginning.

Aurelina watched from the side, her heart still pounding from the excitement of the event. Today had been about proving their individual skills. But she knew this was only the first phase. And tomorrow, it would be RHH’s turn to shine again.

The Royal Clash Cup wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
