Perhaps A Leash
Prompt: Class Final Assignment, again I don't remember what the actual prompt was.
Hutchingson was trying his best to ignore everyone else in the park. All he wanted to do was read his newspaper in peace. It was a particularly nice day. The sun was out and there was a pleasant breeze. That of course meant that everyone and their children were out and about. Hutchingson glared at a small child who was toddling after a butterfly. They were wandering after that butterfly much too close to him. He had a very specific area in the park that no one else wandered into because he would sit and glare at them until they left him alone. This child, however, seemed immune to his glare.
He returned to his newspaper. A moment later a small chubby hand was grabbing the edge of his paper and pulling it. Hutchingson pulled the toddler's chubby hand off the paper and tried to keep reading. This proved rather difficult by the child's attempts to climb into his lap.
"What do you want?" He asked. "Don't you have parents you can annoy?" The toddler laughed and grabbed his newspaper again. Hutchingson placed the child on the bench next to him and kept reading his paper. The child laughed and leaned against Hutchingson's side. Hutchingson was about to just leave the child on the bench when a frantic young woman ran up to them.
"I presume this is yours," Hutchingson said.
"Yes, thank you so much for looking after her," the woman said. "I just set her down for a moment and she disappeared."
"Might I suggest a leash next time?" Hutchingson said as he collected his paper and hat and left without another word.
