Chapter 3

My alarm rang loudly as I lazily threw my hand at it hoping to hit the snooze button but instead sent it reeling towards the ground. I sigh as the sound of plastic hitting wood echoed in my empty bedroom. I groaned as I slowly sat up and rubbed my eyes, removing the sleep that clouded them. I swung my feet off the bed and grimaced as they hit the cold floor beneath me. I then began my morning routine including brushing my teeth, showering, and getting dressed. Today was my first day the Looney bin so I wasn't in my best mood this morning, then again some would argue I never am. I looked through my closet for the outfit I bought for this occasion. A pair of black scrubs and white tennis shoes. I would of just bought black tennis shoes but the dress code required white so I'm stuck with this. I walk in front of the mirror and saw that the top hugged me a tad bit but not in a muscle shirt way. I pulled at it a little to loosen it a bit which didn't work.

I let my hair the way it was and didn't bother putting on any cologne considering I'm not trying to impress anybody plus I hate the smell of cologne. I only own a bottle because it was a gift given to me by Petra. I pick up my keys to my Challenger, deciding that I shouldn't show up in anything flashy or complicated for the lower classed people that probably worked there. The parking lot probably consists of Toyota pick ups and old Buick's. I let out a "tch" at the thought of these people surrounding me, they just better be showered. I open up the door to my pitch black 2015 Dodge Challenger and sat down on the snow white interior. I turned the engine over and the seats began heating up due to the seat warmers I have installed. I then back out of my garage and close the door using my security app. While I was on it I lock up my house and turn the security on. I then proceed to back out of my drive and head towards the hospital.

I look at the screen on the console of my car double checking the GPS. It told me to turn into this extremely large mansion that looked like a boxed up white house without the spinning rims and flames. This did not look like a mental hospital and neither did the cars parked here. They weren't bad but decent, mostly Jeeps and Ford's, a few Cadillacs here and there. I slowly pulled up into the lot and decided to park next to a red Jeep that towered over my Challenger leading me to let out an annoyed sigh. I turned off my engine and stepped gingerly out of my car. I didn't like the fact that this place looked more like a rehab doctor Phil would send some fucked up teen to rather than a home for maniacs. I slowly strolled to the front of the building and see a bronze plaque that reads:
"Scouts Region Hospital
Est: September, 9, 2014
In memory of Lyra Smith"
This was the place alright.

I gently pushed a red button next to the door and heard a buzz and a red light come on.

I wait a moment and then an extremely cheery voice comes on through the speaker "Hiya, how can I help you?"

I roll my eyes at what I assume is a women due to the high pitched voice and happy persona "I'm here for volunteer work" I state bluntly and with that the buzzer rings and a green light appears "Alright come on in" the voice chirps and I enter slowly.

The inside lobby was simply decorated and the doors leading farther into the facility were heavily locked much like the one I just went through. I look towards the front desk and spot a blonde haired women maybe in her early twenties sitting patiently. She smiled brightly at me and I roll my eyes at the act of kindness but she doesn't seem affected.

I walk to the oak wood desk and look at her as she beams at me with her sky blue eyes "I'm here for volunteering. My names-"

"Levi Ackerman? Yes Mr. Smith has been waiting for you. Just walk through the door on the left and make a left at the first hall you come across and it'll lead you straight to his office" I glare at her for interrupting me and then quickly make my way to the door.

When I reach it a buzz comes from the speaker next to it and a green light blinks giving me the go ahead to open the door which I gladly do and begin walking to the office of Mr.Smith. As I walk I think about who this man is, judging that I'm meeting him first he's probably the owner of the institution. I near his office and begin to reach for the handle when it's suddenly slammed open and out pops a crazy haired woman which I'm assuming is a rogue patient. She's wearing a lab coat and thick oddly shaped glasses and has a sadistic grin plastered on her face along with the failed attempt of a pony tail that just ended up looking like a bunch of auburn hair frayed together. I stare at her weirdly as she turns her head to look at me. I Immediately recoil myself from her disturbing gaze and back up an inch. She then laughs and pushes past me eagerly and heads off in a sprint to God knows where.

I process for a moment what just happened but before I can finish a voice calls me "Mr. Ackerman I'm assuming? Please come in" I turn my head to see a blonde haired man with eyebrows that look like they're about to fly away.

He sat at his desk in a collected manner and beckoned me in office. I walk in calmly and take a seat "You guys allow the patients to wander around than?"

I ask honestly and he lets out a light laugh

"No they are kept in their rooms. That was Dr. Hanji, she's the researcher at this hospital. She helps with the prognosis of the patients. And I see you've already met my assistant and front desk attendant Christa." I slowly nod my head keeping my eyes focused on his.

He sits up straighter while I stay in my relaxed position "Mr. Ackerman I would personally like to welcome you to the team. You'll be a caretaker to a patient that will be assigned to you by Mike, your supervisor" I kept my expression neutral

"Look I don't care which nut job I'm assigned to as long as they can clean themselves so if you would be so kind to inform 'Mike'-" he cuts me off before I finish

"Mr. Ackerman, first of all we don't call the patient derogatory terms such as those and I can assure you that these patients aren't like that. They can function like normal people they just can't process like normal people. For example some patients have extreme PTSD and the simple sound of a tray falling on the ground can cause them to panic and accidentally or purposely hurt someone or themselves. This was all in the packet that was given to you at court" I rolled my eyes "Yeah, I threw that away" he raises an eyebrow

"Well than you'll have to learn the hard way I guess" I blink slowly "I guess so".

___~***~___

I was currently on tour through the facility by the supervisor Mike. He had a habit of sniffing things and by things I mean people. He tried it with me but I handled the situation before he could even get a whiff. He told me that I have the options between three patients. Two of them suffered from extreme bipolar disorder and minor PTSD while the third one suffered from major PTSD and extreme anger issues and minor OCD. Mike warned me that the third one had gone through six caretakers. The last officially assigned one was three months ago. Ever since then some caretakers have volunteered to take care of her for minor things when they could but she hasn't had round the clock care like she should have. She apparently has assaulted almost every caretaker that has walked into her room and actually sent one to the emergency room for a concussion. They do have caretakers available but all refuse to care for her. Mike wasn't even sure if the other two were even available considering that the option was this patient. He hands three files on each patient and begin to go through them. The first patient had bipolar disorder and PTSD.

It was a male with blonde hair and grey eyes, his name was Jonathan McAllister his age was 21 years old. The next was another male with the same diagnosis. He was bald and had brown eyes. His name was Mark Ellsberg and he was 42 years old. The last one was the woman that everyone seemed to fear. I open the file and begin to examine it. Her name was Ares Waters and she was a diagnosed with an extreme case to PTSD with major anger issues and obsessive compulsive disorder. She had bright eyes that seemed bored and angry and unusually rich colored hair. She also had a thin scar leading down from her neck to her collar bone. It says she has delusions of her 9 year old brother from time to time and get angered when she's told he isn't real. I look the three files over and over again till I come to a decision. I look up at Mike and see him smiling at me as if he knew my decision

"I'll take Ares Waters" he smirks and take the other two files "I don't know what made you want to choose her but God help you" I rolled my eyes.

The real reason I chose her because she peaked my interest, that and she had a cleaning habit. He closes the drawer containing the files on patients and turns to me "Great, you'll start tomorrow with her since today isn't the best day to talk to her" I tilt my head curiously but my face denies the presence of the emotion "Why?" He sighs "It's her brothers birthday. She doesn't leave her room on the ninth of January and the thirtieth of June. Before you ask that's the date of her brothers death"

I don't reply just nod my head in understanding "Well, I suggest you go to the break room and ask around for Mikasa. She's been providing temporary care to Ares while she attends to her main patient. She works well with Ares since her charge has more extreme anger issues than Ares. That and she can actually subdue Ares if needed." I nod my head as I stand up

"Oh and one last thing. Don't mention the word centipede or one thousand around her. She starts panicking and subtracting by seven and attacking whoever she sees" I raise an eyebrow suspiciously waiting for him to say he was just kidding but that didn't come. This was going to be a hassle.
