16 || A Surprise in the Mountains

The speed that everyone was going at made it seem like everyone around them just stopped and froze in their spots. Jorge grabbed Marcus and dragged him away from the party, while the rest were all scattered around, the loud music and screaming from people booming in their ears. Teresa went over toward someone who was lying on the ground. Piper went past them and realized that it was Thomas.

"Brenda!" Aurora yelled through the crowd, shoving people out of her way. "Brenda!"

Piper tried to block out all of the noise, but it was no use as it consumed her. She almost fell over when she felt a pair of arms catch me.

"It's Aris!" he called out. "I got you, Piper!"

Piper grabbed onto Aris as he took her away from everyone. Feeling dizzy and exhausted, she shut her eyes for a brief moment, her breathing getting steady. Finally, the noise was no longer there, which eased her a bit.

She looked up at Aris and nodded her head. "Thanks," she muttered.

"No problem," he replied. "Here, sit down."

She obliged and sat down on a couch, sighing in relief. "I don't know what happened. I guess it was just a lot of people and noise and all that."

"I understand." Aris sat down beside her, leaning back on the couch.

Before Piper could say anything else to him, Minho, Newt, Frypan, and Teresa all came in with an unconscious Thomas. They set him down in a chair, making him as comfortable as they could. Aurora and the other girls came in with Brenda and did the same thing.

"What happened to them? Are they okay?" Piper asked.

Newt sighed. "They're fine."

"I don't know what they were thinking, coming in here..." Aurora mumbled.

"Maybe they weren't thinking at all," Piper pointed out.

"Or they were desperate to see if we were here," Maeve commented.

Jorge stormed in with Marcus, throwing him in a chair and tying him up. Then, before Marcus could even open his mouth, Jorge slammed a punch to his face.

"What the hell?!" Marcus cried out, groaning in pain.

"It's nice to see you again, hermano," Jorge stated. "I didn't think our reunion would be like this, though."

Marcus let out a laugh. "Well, you could be a little bit nicer..."

Jorge laid a punch on him.

"Or not," Marcus croaked out. "What do you want from me?"

Jorge smirked. "I want some information about the Right Arm."

"Oh, yeah? That's too bad. I ain't got any."

Jorge shrugged his shoulders. "Suit yourself, hermano." With that, Jorge began to throw punches at Marcus, his grunts overpowering Marcus' screams. After so many punches, Jorge stopped to look at his bloody and swollen face.

Brenda was the first to wake up, gasping and panting. "What...where am I?"

"Hey, it's okay, Bren," Aurora assured her, helping her sit up. "You're fine. We all are."

Brenda nodded her head. "Good."

Teresa went over to Thomas, gazing down at him. Thomas woke up all of a sudden, which made her place his hand on his chest to calm him down. "Hey. Hey, you're okay."

Thomas looked up at her. "Teresa?"

She smiled softly at him. "Hi. We have to stop meeting like this," she teased, grinning some more.

Minho came over and smirked at him. "Welcome back, you ugly shank."

Aurora shook her head. "Shank? Stick? I will never understand the words you guys all came up with in those Mazes."

Jorge looked at all of us. "May I continue now?" he asked the others. When no one answered, he turned back toward Marcus. "I suggest that you talk, you son of a bitch!"

Another punch.

"Damn!" Marcus grunted. He looked back up at Jorge. "I'm sorry, but you're going to have to leave my house."

Thomas stood up and looked at Marcus in confusion, going toward Newt. "What the hell...?

"Looks like you've been having fun," Newt stated.

Jorge sighed, shaking his head and ignoring Newt's comment. "Listen. I don't enjoy hurting you. Okay? So, where is the Right Arm, Marcus?"

Thomas raised his eyebrows. "Wait, this is Marcus?" he questioned in shock.

"The kid catches on quick," Marcus laughed. "Are you the brains of this operation?"

Jorge pulled Marcus' head up by his hair. "I know you know where they're hiding. So you tell me, and I'll make you a deal. You can come with us."

Marcus shook his head, laughing some more. "I burned that bridge a long time ago. Besides, I made my own deal. You're the one that taught me to never miss an opportunity."

"What's he talking about?" Newt asked.

"I'm talking about supply and demand," Marcus replied.

"You care to explain that to us?" Aurora retorted.

Marcus rolled his eyes, still finding this all amusing. "WICKED wants all the Immunes they can get. I help provide that for them. So I lure the kids in, they get drunk, they have a good time. And then, later, WICKED comes in. They separate the wheat from the chaff." He let out a laugh once again.

Everyone stood up and watched the two, wondering what was going to happen next.

Jorge's expression turned from annoyed to anger. "I changed my mind, hermano. I do enjoy hurting you." Instead of packing in one more punch, he kicked his chair, knocking him down to the floor. Jorge pulled out a gun and got down in Marcus' face, gagging him. "Talk!"

"Okay! But I'm not making any promises! These guys like to move around!" With the help of Aurora, Jorge pulled him back on all four legs of the chair. Marcus' breathing became heavy. "They have an outpost in the mountains. But it's a long way away. You got half of WICKED on your ass. You're never gonna make it."

"Not on foot," Jorge pointed out, smirking. "Where's Bertha?"

Marcus' face fell, becoming sad and desperate. "Not Bertha."

*******

So, they came to a compromise and Jorge took Bertha, leaving Marcus behind.

All of them piled in the car, having to make some adjustments. Some of them hung out of the window, holding on for their lives. Piper and Aris were on opposite sides of the car, letting the wind hit their faces, grinning from ear to ear. With all of the things that they had done to get this far, for the first time in a while, Piper had a feeling that wasn't sad at all. For once, she was able to forget all of her worries at the moment. She looked at Aris and saw the light in him, his smile dancing in the atmosphere, along with hers.

Lillie nudged Piper with her elbow, grinning. "It's there, Piper."

"What?"

She rolled her eyes. "You can be clueless sometimes."

Beside Aris was Gwyneth, who grinned with Lillie, raising her eyebrows at Piper. She shook her head, trying to laugh it all off.

The drive up to the mountains came to a stop when Jorge realized that the rest of the road was blocked off. He stopped the car and turned it off. Everyone piled back onto the ground, staring at the abandoned cars that were blocking the road.

"Well, I guess we're on foot," Jorge announced, huffing a sigh.

They held a firm grip on their backpacks very tight around their shoulders and began walking. Looking around, they tried to find more things that would be useful, peeking inside the cars and rummaging around in the trunks. The rumbling of stones caught their attention, making them stop in place and listen closely to the stones again.

We aren't alone.

Piper's suspicions were right when gunshots went off all around them.

"Get down! Take cover!" Jorge yelled as they all took cover by the cars.

Piper panted, feeling her heart beating fast. She looked over beside her and grabbed Aris' hand. Once the gunshots stopped, she looked down at their hands and quickly pulled her away. "Sorry," I mumbled.

"No, it's fine," he assured her.

"Hey, is everyone okay out there?" Thomas called out.

"We're fine!" Teresa shouted from Piper's group.

"Anyone know where those bloody shots came from?!" Newt asked.

Jorge grunted. "That son of a bitch, Marcus! He led us into an ambush!"

"Could he be any more sticking louder?" Maeve added in a hushed tone.

It was all too quiet, which made no one move at all. Suddenly, more gunshots came about, making them cover our heads again.

"Now what do we do?" Lillie inquired.

"Let's see what Jorge wants to do," Aurora stated.

"Everybody! Get set to sprint back to the truck! And hold your ears!" Jorge yelled.

Maeve scoffed. "Great. Now the people shooting at us know about our brilliant plan."

"Just get ready to run, Mae," Piper told her.

Everyone got into a running stance, then they heard the cocking of a gun nearby. "Drop it," someone commanded. "Drop it now!" When nothing happened, the voice grew louder. "I said, drop it!" Whatever it was, Jorge placed it on the ground. "On your feet! Let's go! Move!"

"Back up!" another voice chimed in.

"Easy now..." Jorge said calmly.

"You two, over here now!" the first voice ordered, referring to Minho and Newt. "Don't be stupid! Move!"

"The rest of you, get up!" the second voice came back, talking about the rest of the group. She pointed her gun at all them, their hands up in the air. "Slowly!"

Piper took a closer look at the girls, who looked so familiar to her. One had light brown skin with braids while the other had a lighter skin tone with blonde hair. Then, despite the bandanas covering their faces, she knew who they were instantly. "Harriet? Sonya?"

Furrowing their eyebrows, they both took off their bandanas, making her assumptions true. "Piper?"

"You're both alive!" Aris exclaimed, being the first to run after them for hugs. Next it was Maeve, then Gwyneth, then Lillie, and then Piper was last.

"What the hell are you guys doing here?!" Harriet asked.

"You're lucky we didn't shoot your dumb asses!" Sonya added.

"Are you sticks okay?" Harriet spoke up again, then looked at Maeve, Gwyneth, and Lillie. "I thought you girls were gone when we escaped WICKED."

Sonya looked at Piper and Aris, shaking her head and smiling. "It's you guys. I can't believe you're alive."

"I can't believe we finally found you," Piper replied, smiling back.

"Uh...what's happening?" Minho spoke up, looking confused just like everyone else.

"We were all in the Maze together," Aris explained.

Harriet swung her gun over her shoulder and let out a huge whistle. "We're clear, guys! Come on out!"

"Copy that! We're clear! Stand down!" a man shouted from the top of the mountains.

Everyone looked around at the ones at the top that emerged from hiding. Harriet and Sonya led them past the cars and into a tunnel. "Back it up, Joe!" Sonya called out.

A truck went in reverse, revealing more cars--working cars--in their presence. "We're taking them to base," Harriet informed some people with weapons, most likely soldiers.

"Wait, so, how did you two get here?" Aris asked.

"Well, I'm sure you know from Mae, Lillie, and Gwyn that the Right Arm got us out and we all somehow got separated during the escape," Harriet explained.

"So do you know where the Right Arm is?" Thomas asked, sounding almost desperate.

Harriet grinned at Thomas, opening the car door for him. "Hop in."

While Thomas and his friends got in one truck, Jorge, Brenda, and Aurora got in another truck, leaving the rest into another one with Harriet and Sonya. They all piled in and headed off to base.

Sonya happily sighed. "It's great to see you sticks again," she exclaimed. "We've got a lot of catching up to do."
