17 || The Right Arm

Despite the fact that they were all separated after the Maze, it seemed like no time had passed by for any of them. It was almost like they were back in the Glen, just acting like the Glenners they used to be. Now, given the circumstances, they were not really Glenners anymore. They were fugitives, running away from the bad guys.

"So, what happened with you two?" Harriet asked Piper and Aris.

They looked at each other, then Piper was the first to speak up. "We were at WICKED's facility for a week. They took our friends, one by one. Aris and I were the only ones left from our Maze when we met Thomas and his friends."

"We kind of all found each other again," Lillie added. "I don't think we'd all be here if it wasn't for Thomas and Jorge."

Sonya sighed sadly. "So, all of us here are the only ones left from our Maze?"

"That seems to be the case," Harriet stated. "Which means that we really have to stick together now. We've lost so many from the Glen and the Maze and now from WICKED. I care about you crackfaces a lot."

Maeve rolled her eyes. "Stuff it, Harriet."

"That's the Maeve we remember!" she exclaimed, smiling.

"I think we're here," Sonya claimed, looking out the window.

When all the trucks came to a stop, everyone piled out and looked at the camp before them. There were tents and trucks all over the grounds, people eating and working on weapons.

"They've been planning this for over a year now," Harriet explained. "This is all for us."

"You guys are lucky you found us when you did. We're moving out at first light," Sonya said. She looked over at a man nearby. "Where's Vince?" she asked him.

"Somewhere over there, I think," he replied, pointing over at a tent not too far from them.

"Who's Vince?" Thomas questioned.

"He's the one who decides if you get to stay," Harriet answered.

Minho furrowed his eyebrows. "I thought the Right Arm was supposed to be an army."

"Yeah, we were," a man spoke up from their right, walking their way, followed by a few men. "This is all that's left of us." Vince had a scruffy look to him, his blond hair on his head looking just as messy as his mustache and beard. He stood in front of the group, acting almost exhausted, but not showing too much of it. "Lot of good people died getting us this far." He took a glance at them, a curious yet suspicious look on his face. "Who are they?"

"They're Immunes," Harriet answered. "We caught them coming up the mountain."

"Did you check 'em?" Vince questioned.

"We know those girls and him," Harriet said, pointing at Piper, Maeve, Gwyneth, Lillie, and Aris. "Sonya and I trust them."

Vince sighed, shaking his head. "Well, I don't." He looked at the other men by his side, motioning them with his head. "Check 'em."

Everything was going fine until a wheezing noise came from Brenda. Her lips were a dark purple and she was about to go pale. "Hey, boss..." one man began to say, eyeing Brenda.

Brenda let out a gasp and collapsed on the ground. "Brenda!" Jorge shouted, running down to her side, followed by Aurora. "Brenda, talk to me!" He picked her up, panting.

"I'm sorry," she gasped.

"What's going on with her?" Vince asked, squatting down to their level.

"I don't know," Jorge confessed, shaking his head, looking and sounding worried. "Brenda, are you alright?"

Vince spotted her ankle, sliding down her sock to reveal a bite mark with some of the veins popped out already. "Shit!" Vince stood up, pulling his gun out, pointing it at Brenda. "Crank! We got a Crank!"

Everyone backed away from Vince with wide eyes, huddling in one group now.

"No!" Aurora shouted, standing up with her gun in her hand, aiming it at Vince.

"Wait!" Thomas shouted, putting his hands out, jumping in front of Brenda. "This just happened, okay? She's not dangerous yet."

Aurora looked at Thomas. "You knew that she was bitten?!"

"You shouldn't have brought her here!" Vince protested.

Thomas looked at Aurora and Vince. "Listen--"

"If we let Cranks in here now, then the Safe Haven won't last a week!" Vince yelled.

"I understand, okay? But I told her that you could help," Thomas blurted out. "There's got to be something you can do."

Vince, huffing a loud sigh, nodded his head. "Yeah, there is." He cocked his gun, staring at Brenda, then pointing the gun back at her. "I can put her out of her misery!"

"No!" Jorge yelled as two men came and held him away from Brenda.

"Don't you dare!" Aurora screamed as men came toward her as well, snatching her gun away.

"Vince, that's enough! Let them go!" a woman with short and curly brown hair came out of the tent, running toward us.

"She's infected, Doc," Vince explained. "There's nothing we can do for her."

"No," she agreed, then looked at Thomas. "But he can." She paused, forming a small smile. "Hello, Thomas."

"What? You know me?" Thomas asked, looking and sounding confused.

The woman nodded her head, very intrigued. "Interesting. It makes sense they'd put you in the Maze." She went toward Brenda, checking her out and her Crank bite. "Though, I must admit, I was worried they'd kill you after what you did."

Thomas raised his eyebrows. "What I did?"

The woman sighed, looking up at Thomas. "My name is Mary Cooper. The first time we spoke, you said you couldn't take it anymore, watching your friends die, one by one. The last time we spoke, you gave me the coordinates of every WICKED compound, trial and lab."

Vince kept an eye on Thomas. "He was our source."

"Yes," Mary replied. "We couldn't have pulled all of this off without him." She looked at the other men. "Take her to the tent and get everyone else some warm clothes." She looked at Thomas, motioning him to go with her. "Come on. I need to get some blood from you."

So while Mary led Thomas to her tent, some men picked up Brenda and followed the two with Jorge and Aurora right behind them. The rest got some warm clothes from Harriet and Sonya, feeling a lot better than ever before since they started their journey in the Scorch.

The air was getting colder as the sun was going down, making Piper use her hands to get warmer. She sat down on a rock, watching down below as the others were in their groups, talking and laughing amongst each other. She smiled a little, happy that they were all reunited again, along with some new allies, at a place where they were safe from WICKED.

She was drinking small sips of her water from a small can when Aris came up to join her. He sat down beside her, sighing. "Hey," he said.

"Hey," she responded, swishing her water around.

"You've been quiet for a while," he pointed out. "Is everything okay?"

She sniffled from the cold, huffing a sigh. "You know that I still trust you, right?" He nodded his head. "Okay, good. Because I haven't told anyone this."

"Told anyone what?"

"About what I'm feeling right now."

Aris furrowed his eyebrows. "I don't get it, Piper."

Piper sighed again, shaking her head. "I'm feeling so many emotions, Aris. I'm scared about WICKED finding us, about some of our friends not being immune or not. But I'm also feeling guilty, because..." She trailed off for a moment, then continued. "Because some of our friends aren't here with us."

Aris shot her a sad look. "Piper, you shouldn't feel that way. It's not your fault that some of our friends aren't here, it's all WICKED's."

"I wish I could believe that."

"Hey," he said, grabbing my hand. "All of our friends, the ones that didn't make it, they'd be proud of you, of all of us, for getting this far. Rachel, Esther, Cora, Emily...all of them. They'd like this place. They'd also like that we're still fighting for what we believed in back in the Glen."

"You really think so?"

Aris nodded his head, giving her a soft smile. "Yeah, I do."

Piper smiled back at him, squeezing his hand. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," he replied. "You can always count on me, okay?"

She nodded her head. "You can count on me, too."

He bit his lip, swallowing hard. Piper felt her heart beating a bit faster, her palms sweating. Slowly, their heads were moving in closer, the space between them getting smaller.

"Aris, I--" Piper began to say.

Then, the whirring of helicopters, the flashing of lights, and the sound of loud and fiery explosions cut her off.
