18 || The Invasion (Part One)

"What's going on?!" Aris shouted over the screams of people, shooting up from his spot.

"I don't know!" Piper shouted back, standing up as well. "We've got to go help! Come on!"

Dropping her water, the two headed down to the camp to help the others. Through the fire and the clamoring of people, they hardly had time to process what was even going on.

But her answer to all of this dropped from helicopters.

WICKED.

More screams erupted when the guns went off, people falling to the ground like flies. Explosions were still going off as they took all of the chaos in.

"Piper! Aris!" Maeve shouted, running their way. "Come on!"

The two followed her to get away from the soldiers, trying to dodge bullets and avoiding any soldiers. Vince already had a gun, shooting as many of WICKED's people as he could, trying to get people to run for cover.

"Where are the rest of our friends?!" Piper asked.

"No idea! I lost them after the explosions!" Maeve replied. "Let's keep moving!"

"Mae!" Harriet shouted nearby, sprinting toward them. She threw guns at all three of them. "Take as many down as possible!"

They nodded their heads and prepared the guns. While running around, they aimed and fired at WICKED soldiers, taking them down. But the more they shot at, it seemed like more appeared out of nowhere. Nevertheless, the three of them fired guns until there was no ammo left in them.

"Shit!" Maeve cursed. Looking up at the soldiers, she grunted. "Screw it!" With that, she ran toward them, her gun still at hand.

"Mae, stop!" Piper yelled.

"Wait!" Aris shouted, going after her.

"Not you, too!" Piper protested, throwing her gun to the ground, about to run after him as well.

"Piper!" Aurora screamed, yanking me by my hand. "Are you trying to get yourself killed?!"

"Aurora, let go of me!" Piper yelled as she was dragged away to take cover with her, Brenda, Jorge, and Thomas.

The five looked on at the scene, Piper's heart about to fall and yet beat out of her chest all at once. She wanted to close her eyes and tell herself that this wasn't happening, that WICKED didn't find them and invaded the camp. She wanted to be convinced that they were safe for good this time. But that was not the reality that she was living in. Instead, she was dealing with the reality that they were being hunted by WICKED, by people that wanted to harvest them for something that they might never find.

"We have to go, while we still have the chance," Jorge stated.

"We gotta go find the others," Thomas replied, trying to run to his friends.

"No!" Jorge grabbed him by his jacket and pinned him back down. "You can't help them! Neither of you can!"

So they watched some more as guns went off and more soldiers. Piper spotted one preparing a small bomb for Vince and Harriet close by. The soldier threw the bomb their way, letting it go off. Fortunately, it only electrocuted them and didn't blow their faces off.

"No!" Piper attempted to leave, but Aurora grabbed her, covering her mouth.

"I'm sorry," Jorge apologized to them. "There's just nothing you can do for them."

Piper pulled Aurora's hand from her mouth and glared at Jorge. "Yes, there is." Without warning, she elbowed Aurora in the stomach, resulting in her groaning in pain as she ran out toward the others.

Before Piper could even reach any of her friends, she was caught by a soldier. He grabbed her hands and put them behind her back. Then, he took her by the shirt, dragging her with the other Immunes that WICKED got. "Get on your knees!" he ordered, shoving Piper to the ground next to Lillie.

"Are you okay?" Piper whispered to her.

Lillie nodded her head. "Yeah."

The same soldier pushed Piper's head down, scanning something that was on her neck, the same thing that Brenda scanned on Thomas' neck when they first met. "Subject B20."

All around them, WICKED put the guns and other weapons that the Right Arm had in a pile and Vince and Mary with the other Right Arm members in one small group near the Immunes. Thomas' friends were all lined up on the first row ,while the rest were behind them.

Janson himself finally made an appearance, strolling around at the mess that was all over the camp. "How many did we get?" he asked a WICKED official.

"All of them. Give or take," the man replied.

"Give or take what?" Janson spat out.

"Well, they lost a few," he said.

Janson scanned around at all of the Immunes, looking a bit baffled. "Where's Thomas?"

"Right here!" he announced, sounding tired as he lazily put his hands up in the air.

Janson smirked as Thomas came to him. "Thomas." Then, he packed a punch to his stomach. "Get him in line!"

Thomas groaned in pain as he was pushed in line beside Minho.

"Why didn't you run?" Minho asked him.

Thomas sighed, shaking his head. "Because I'm tired of running."

"Me, too," Piper muttered. "We should all be tired of running."

"Where's Jorge, Brenda, and Aurora?" Lillie questioned.

"They left," Piper replied. "They had to leave. WICKED doesn't want them."

"Where's Teresa?" Gwyneth spoke up next. "I don't see her stickin' ass anywhere, either."

"Maybe she got away, too," Maeve said.

Piper shook her head. "I don't know."

Suddenly, another sound of whirring came from the sky. Everyone looked up to see what it was. With bright lights they all were almost blinded by a new vehicle in the air.

"What is that?" Piper asked.

"It's a Berg," Aris muttered beside her. "It's how WICKED gets around so easily."

Those jet engines began to point down, getting ready to land on the ground in front of them. The sand beneath them spun all over the place, using their hands to get it out of their faces.

The Berg landed right in front of them, opening up to reveal more soldiers and then the last person Piper wanted to see: Doctor Ava Paige.

"Is this all of them?" she inquired of Janson, her eyes scanning back and forth on all of the Immunes.

"Most of them," Janson replied.

"That's not very convincing..."

"It'll be enough."

She took one last glance at the group, then straightened out her white coat. "Start loading them in."

Janson nodded his head. "You heard her! Let's go!"

Everyone stood up as the soldiers started at the back row, dragging the Immunes away to the Berg. Next, the soldiers stood Thomas up and led him to Dr. Paige.

"Hello, Thomas." The boy only eyed her cautiously.

"No sticking way," Maeve mumbled, looking over in another direction, her mouth dropped in shock.

Then, Piper saw why Maeve looked so surprised. Because coming their way was Teresa herself.

She strolled beside Dr. Paige. "Hello, Dr. Paige."

Dr. Paige smiled at her. "I'm glad you're safe."

"What the hell?" Frypan said. "Teresa?" the boy gave her a sad look.

"Wait, what's going on?" Newt asked.

"She's with them," Thomas explained.

"What?" Lillie spoke up.

"Since when?" Minho questioned.

Janson chuckled. "Oh, Teresa's always had an evolved appreciation of the greater good. Once we restored her memories, it was only a matter of time."

Piper looked over at Aris, knowing that he, too, had his memories back. So what was so different between him and Teresa that made her betray all of us? Or maybe Aris hadn't cracked yet. Maybe that was what WICKED was waiting for.

Teresa looked upset and also guilty at the same time. "I'm sorry. I had no choice. This is the only way. We have to find a cure."

"She's right," Dr. Paige added. "This is all just a means to an end. You used to understand that, Thomas." She looked over at Aris. "Aris used to understand that, too, along with Rachel."

"Don't you dare mention her name," Piper snapped. "I hope you know that you're nothing but a monster."

She exhaled loudly. "No matter what you all think of me, I am not a monster. I'm a doctor. I swore an oath to find a cure, no matter the cost! I just need more time!"

That was the problem. Soon, time would run out, and there would be nothing left of humanity.

"You need more blood!" Mary intervened, standing up, looking in more of a rough shape than she did a few hours ago.

"Hello, Mary," Dr. Paige said calmly. "I hoped we'd meet again. I'm sorry it had to be under these circumstances."

"You know, I'm sorry about a lot of things, too," she retorted. "But not this, not any of this. At least my conscience is clear."

Dr. Paige held her gaze at Mary, a long and blank stare, then she slowly nodded her head. "So is mine."

BANG!

Everyone jumped back and heard the echo of the shot as blood poured out of Mary Cooper from the wound that formed in her chest.
