4 || Snooping Around

Crawling through the vents was so much work, taking all of Piper's energy that she stopped for a brief moment to catch her breath and rest. She had no idea where she was going or where to even start with sneaking around this place. However, the place was so big that she could probably go anywhere and find something. Once she was good to start crawling again, she went on with her way, trying her best not to grunt so loud, fearing that someone would hear her.

Piper began to scan around, looking for any openings for me that would lead her in a room or even the hallway. After searching for a bit, she finally found one right below me. She carefully unhooked the door, letting it swing down. With her feet first, she jumped down, landing on her feet and keeping her balance. Looking around, Piper tried to pick which way to go. In the end, she just went with her instincts and picked the left.

As Piper began to walk down the hallway, it escaped her mind that there would be security all over the place. Of course, she wasn't armed with any weapons, but hopefully no one would catch her.

"Okay, where can I go to find something?" she muttered to herself. Suddenly, as if it just appeared out of nowhere, she spotted a door. "Well, that was sticking easy." She got closer to the door and read what was engraved in it. "Subject Files?"

Confused, Piper took the keycard from her pocket and swiped it, gaining me access to the room. She opened the door and found nothing but a small room with two file cabinets labeled "Males" and "Females." She furrowed her brows and went to the one for the girls and slid it open, revealing a bunch of files in alphabetical order. The first letter she went to was, of course, "P." Piper flipped through the names until she found her name. Taking out the file, she opened it to see what was inside.

PIPER: SUBJECT B20

AGE: 16

SIBLINGS: Henry, Subject A14

BLOOD TYPE: B+

FLARE STATUS: Immune

"What the hell?" she mumbled. "B20? Immune?" She closed her file and put it back where it came from. Then, she scanned her finger until she got to the letter "S." Piper went under that letter and pulled out Sonya's file.

SONYA: SUBJECT B4

AGE: 15

SIBLINGS: Newt, Subject A5

BLOOD TYPE: AB-

FLARE STATUS: Immune

Piper picked the letter "E" next and took out Esther's file next, reading it over.

ESTHER: SUBJECT B8

AGE: 16

SIBLINGS: Charles, Subject A19

BLOOD TYPE: O-

FLARE STATUS: Not Immune

Still confused, Piper looked at other files of the female Glenners, looking at some that she didn't even recognize their names. Not wanting to spend too much time in here, she skipped a few Glenners and went over to the other cabinet, opening it and pulling out Aris' file.

ARIS JONES: SUBJECT B1

AGE: 15

SIBLINGS: None

BLOOD TYPE: A-

FLARE STATUS: Immune

From what Piper was seeing in these files, their old identities were stripped away, with no trace of anything from their old lives, including their real names. How did Janson have these files on them?

Suddenly, Piper heard someone, which made her quickly put his file back and leave the room, closing the door behind her. She made a dash toward the way she came when she was stopped by two soldiers and the big man himself.

"Hello, Piper," Janson greeted her with that creepy smirk on his face.

Piper inhaled sharply. "Mr. Janson," she muttered.

"Why don't we take a stroll?" he suggested, acting calm.

She raised her eyebrows in surprise, but walked beside him. "Okay," was all she said.

"You do realize that we have cameras all around this facility, don't you?" he questioned.

Piper rolled her eyes. "Well, I know that now..."

He chuckled. "So tell me, what were you doing, sneaking around this late?"

At a loss for words, she shrugged her shoulders. "I was bored," she lied.

"Bored enough to steal a keycard from a soldier?"

"I guess you can say that."

He stopped in his tracks and looked at her. "What did you find out, Piper?"

Piper stopped as well, staring at him. "I found those files about everyone, including my friends and I. What are those about? Why do you have those?"

"Like I told you before, it's my job to know everything."

"Define everything for me, then."

Janson sighed, clearing his throat, getting annoyed with her. "What do you think we're hiding here, Piper?"

"You're hiding enough to convince everyone here that we're safe from WICKED," she retorted. "So, what's with those files and why do you have them?"

He paused, looking at her, then chuckled. "You really are a curious girl."

"You're really bad at answering my questions."

Janson had that weird smirk form across his lips again. "Some things are just better left unexplained." He held out his hand in front of her. "If you don't mind, I'd like to have that keycard back."

Piper reached into her pocket and handed it to him. "So are you going to punish me or...?"

Janson chuckled again. "Consider this a warning, Piper." With that, he told the soldiers to take her back to the room, then bid her goodnight before walking away.

As the soldiers led Piper back to her room, she thought more about what she found and whether or not she would tell the other girls about what she discovered. Would they believe her? Probably not. Was it worth a try telling them? Not really. The only person she knew she could tell was Aris. He would believe her for sure. However, it would be nice if he was allowed in the cafeteria more. That way, they had three opportunities to talk instead of just one.

Once they got to Piper's room, one of the soldiers unlocked the door with his keycard and opened it for her. "Try to stay in your room this time," he warned.

Piper didn't respond. Instead, she headed inside the room and listened as the soldier closed the door. She took the cover and placed it back over the vent, making sure it was shut tight. Then, she crawled into her bed and wrapped herself up in my blanket. Huffing a sigh, she closed her eyes and pictured those files that she read, wondering what they could mean and why Janson had them.

At least Piper was right about Janson hiding something. Now, there was a valid reason as to why they needed to get the hell out of here.
