5 || Aris' Discovery

The next night at dinner, which was the only time Piper ever got to see Aris now due to his schedule being changed, she told him about the files that she found, which he thought was odd.

"Files?" he questioned.

"Yes. There were all these files with information about us."

"What kind of information?"

"Our age and family members. They also had other...titles for us."

"What do you mean?" Aris furrowed his brows at her, a bit confused.

"Like for me it said, 'Subject B20.'"

The boy was still puzzled. "What does that even mean?"

"I have no idea, but it was like that for everyone's files. You were 'Subject B1.' It seems kind of weird, don't you think?"

Aris nodded his head. "Yeah, it does."

"Not only that, but it had something about the Flare," she continued. "Like whether or not you were immune to it. Janson acted all nonchalant about it when he found me, like it was no big deal." She paused for a moment, then went on. "Why would Janson need all of that stuff, all of that information about us?"

Aris shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know."

Piper sighed. "I don't know, either. So, did you find anything last night?"

"I think so," he replied. "It's not much, but I'm sure it's something."

"Okay, let's move it, everyone!" a soldier announced to the entire cafeteria. Piper and Aris parted ways, wanting to know what he uncovered.

*******

Piper never found out what Aris discovered the next day, or the day after that, or even the day after that. She could tell that he wanted to tell her, but it seemed like he was a bit paranoid with everyone all around them that could be listening in to them conversations. Of course, he had a fair point, but she was dying to know what he saw that night.

It had been a full seven days, one week since Piper arrived here with what friends that were still with her from the Glen. But that began to change after she was caught after hours by Janson. Every night, more of her friends left the cafeteria with him and never returned. Aris noticed this, too, and he was just as curious and concerned as she was. At this point, they were only able to rely on each other, wondering if one of them would be taken next. Hopefully, that wouldn't happen. They couldn't be alone, not now.

As Piper was making her way toward the cafeteria for dinner, she spotted a new group of kids that showed up once they hit the seventh night. This time, they were all boys and only one girl. She didn't take a good look at all of them, but there weren't many that arrived. They were in the same lab the Glenners were in, all cleaned up and looking better than ever.

When Piper got to the cafeteria, she sat down across from Aris and huffed a sigh. He didn't look up at me when she sat down. She stared at him, hoping he would know that she was here. She cleared my throat and he finally noticed her.

"Hi," he said, sounding slightly upset.

"What's with you?" she inquired.

"I've been going back in the vents to the same place for the past week," he said.

Piper raised her eyebrows, waiting for him to say more. "And?"

He swallowed hard, then continued, leaning in closer. "It's hard to explain, especially in here, but I've noticed a pattern."

"What kind of pattern?"

Instead of replying, he looked up by the entrance. Piper turned her head to see the new arrivals strolling inside the cafeteria, sitting with some boys that had been here for a few days.

"I think it has something to do with the ones that Janson takes with him after dinner," he explained.

Piper pursed her lips, annoyed. "Do you want to be more specific?"

"I already told you, it's hard to explain."

Frustrated at how vague Aris was being, she huffed a sigh and went back to eating her food quietly. When Aris looked back at the door, she turned my head again and saw another boy walking in, sitting down with his other friends.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!" Mr. Janson shouted as he entered the cafeteria, followed by a couple of men behind him. "You all know how this works. If you hear your name called, please rise in an orderly fashion, join my colleagues behind me where they will escort you to the Eastern Wing. Your new lives are about to begin!"

Everyone began to clap all around the cafeteria. However, Piper rolled her eyes.

Janson took out his list and began to read the names. "Connor! Evelyn! Justin! Peter! Allison! Squiggy! Franklin! And Abigail!" Once he stopped reading the names, everyone groaned. "Now, now, don't get discouraged. If I could take more, I would. There's always tomorrow. Your time will come." With that, the others followed Janson out of the cafeteria.

"Piper, there isn't a Safe Haven," Aris whispered to her.

She gave Aris a confused look. "What are you talking about?"

Before Aris could answer, someone was shouting, "Teresa!"

The two looked over and saw a boy standing up. He was heading toward the exit, trying to follow a girl that Piper saw before she came to the cafeteria. The boy was also one of the new arrivals. He was tall and his hair was brown and short.

"Teresa!" he shouted again.

"Hey, hey, hey," one of the guards said, stopping him from leaving.

"Where are they taking her?" he asked.

"They just have to run a few more tests," the guard replied. "Don't worry, they'll be done with her soon."

"Is she okay?"

"She's fine."

After that, the boy reluctantly went back to his seat and sat down.

"Well, that was weird," Piper told Aris.

"I wonder if that girl is going with the others," he said.

"So where are the others going? You said that there wasn't a Safe Haven. If there isn't one, then where the hell is Janson taking them?"

"All right, everyone! Time to clean up and get back to your rooms!" a guard announced to everyone.

"So where is Janson really taking them to?" she repeated to him as they were cleaning up.

"Like I said, I can't explain it, Piper," he replied. "But I can show it to you."

Piper shot him another confused look. "Show it to me?" she repeated.

"Wait for me in your room tonight."

"Do you even know where my room is?" she asked.

"I'll find it." With that, Aris left the cafeteria and strolled down the hallway. What Aris wanted to show her sounded like it wasn't good at all.

*******

That night, Piper stayed awake so that she could go with Aris to see what he was talking about earlier. She was curious and nervous at the same time. What scared her the most was that despite all of the things that they had discovered, it was all still a mystery to them.

All of a sudden, Piper heard a rattling noise from under my bed. She looked under the bed to see Aris there.

Piper gasped, followed by a sigh in relief. "Don't scare me like that!" she hissed.

"Come on," he whispered. "Follow me."

She went under my bed and followed Aris into the vent. They crawled for a long time, and Piper was trying her best to catch up with him.

"Where are we going?" she asked him, panting a little.

"Hold on," he replied. He motioned for her to stay where she was. "Stay here." He then crawled away from her. She heard some more rattling coming from his direction.

She exhaled loudly, thinking about going back to her room. That thought went away when Aris came back with someone else.

"How many people are you planning to bring?" she asked.

"Just you two," he replied, pointing at her and the other boy that caused a scene in the cafeteria earlier. "Follow me. I don't want you guys to miss what I plan to show you."

Confused, the two followed Aris.

"I'm Piper, by the way," she told the boy that was in front of her.

"I'm Thomas," he replied. "I would shake your hand, but..."

"Oh, yeah, I get it," she said. "A proper introduction is kind of hard to do when you're crawling through the vents."

They followed Aris until he finally stopped at another vent that showed a hallway below them.

"Watch," he said.

A doctor walked by and then stopped. She looked back at the gurney that was rolling behind her. But that wasn't the only gurney. One by one, other gurneys came. They were heading inside another room. Seven more came by. After the last one, everyone was gone.

"What the hell was that?" Thomas asked.

"They bring in new ones every night like clockwork," Aris explained.

"You know what they do with them?" Thomas questioned.

"I don't know," Aris replied. "This is as far as I've ever gotten. The vents don't even go into that section. But once they go through that door, they don't come back out."

"There were eight of them," Piper spoke up. "Eight people were picked by Janson at dinner tonight. Are those--"

Aris nodded his head. "Remember the Safe Haven that everyone is talking about? It's not real. I don't think anybody really leaves this place."

Piper and Thomas looked at each other, then back at Aris.

"Why did you show us this?" Thomas asked him.

"Because maybe the others will listen to you," Aris responded. "There's something weird going on here, and I know you think so, too." Aris looked at Piper. "You're all that I have left, Piper, and I'm all that you have."

She nodded her head. "We've gotta get out of here. I think you guys know that already."

Thomas didn't say anything. It was when Aris finally suggested that the three all head back to their rooms. Aris told Thomas his name and then he left them.

"How do you know Aris?" Thomas asked Piper.

"We were in the Maze together," she replied. "He was the only boy. Half of our friends were taken somewhere else, while the other half were taken by Janson throughout the week." She shook her head. "You know what it's like, having your friends ripped away from you. It's brutal."

Thomas nodded his head. "Yeah, I know the feeling." He paused, then sighed. "Well, it was nice meeting you."

"Yeah, you, too."

With that, Thomas headed back to his room, and Piper headed back to hers, knowing that this was not a place they wanted to stay at any longer.
