7 || The Escape (Part One)
"Try to keep up with us, please! We don't have a lot of time!" one of Janson's colleagues told everyone as they were walking toward the Eastern Wing.
Piper's heart was beating faster by the second. She didn't think her name would be on that list. She didn't think she would have to come up with a different plan. If only someone else was called. If only her name wasn't on that list...
They continued walking for a few more minutes, then they arrived at the Eastern Wing. The guy on the left unlocked the door with his keycard and led everyone inside. There were doctors already waiting for them when they walked into the room.
"Good evening, everyone," one of them announced to the group. "Your new lives begin now."
The doctors gave each of them a new set of clothes for them to change in. Piper and the other three girls were led to another room by a guard. Each of them went to an individual dressing room, pulling the curtains behind us. She looked down in her hands to see a white shirt and gray shorts. She took off my shoes and my pants, putting on the shorts. As she was changing shirts, she was now trying to figure out how she was going to get away from these doctors so that she could go find Thomas and Aris.
I need to get out of here, but how?
Piper opened the curtain and left her old clothes and shoes behind, waiting with the others for someone to come back for them. She looked around the room to see if there was anything she could use as a weapon. Of course, she found nothing.
"Right this way, ladies," the same soldier from before said, leading them out of the room and back into the previous room. The boys were no longer in there. There was a doctor in there and four other nurses standing behind her. The guard shut the door behind them as they all waited for the doctor to talk.
"Welcome back, ladies. In a few minutes each of these nurses will escort you to different rooms for final tests. Your lives have officially changed for the better."
Yeah, right.
A nurse with brown hair and pale skin took Piper out of the room first and led her down the hallway. She was looking down at a file, her finger sliding across the words.
"Piper, is it?" she questioned.
Piper didn't answer her. She just kept on walking, not even caring that the nurse was even talking. All she cared about was getting the hell away from her.
She used her keycard to let them in the third room that Piper had been in already, motioning her to sit down on the chair in the corner. Like before, Piper glanced around to see if there was anything that she could use as a weapon. All she saw was her file, bandages, syringe needle...
Syringe needle.
The needle was already filled up with a teal-colored liquid. As the nurse was messing with some machine, Piper was still thinking to herself. Suddenly, she reached over and grabbed the needle, hiding it by her leg.
"Okay, Piper," she spoke up, walking toward her. "I want you to relax. You won't feel any pain." She sighed. "I would also like you to remember something." She paused for a moment, then smirked at her. "WICKED is good."
That was when Piper took the needle and stabbed her with it, letting the liquid get inside of her body. The nurse screamed as the needle went through her neck. She kicked her down to the ground and searched for her keycard. Piper snatched it from her and swiped it, making the door open, running out of the room and down the hallway.
"Okay, what's next?" she muttered, looking down at my clothes. "Pants and shoes."
Piper searched around for an empty room that would possibly have clothes. She finally ended up going back to the same room where she and the rest of the girls had to change clothes., snatching a pair of jeans and taking off my shorts, sliding the jeans on. Next, she found a pair of socks and tennis shoes and put those on as well. She was about to walk out of the room when she saw a nurse, ducking down behind the window and carefully poking her head up. There were nine gurneys rolling down the hallway. She was the only one that knew there was no Safe Haven. Those nine teenagers walked right into their trap.
Once they were no longer in sight, Piper quickly got out of the room and followed them down the hallway. She wanted to know what was beyond those doors. At this point, it didn't matter if she met up with Aris or Thomas. She just wanted to know what these people were hiding.
Piper continued walking down the hallway, making sure that no one saw her. She watched as they went inside the same room like last night, waiting a while before going inside. A few minutes later, all the nurses followed each other out of the room and headed in the opposite direction. When their voices died down, she went up to the door, swiped the keycard, and walked inside.
The first thing that Piper noticed when she went inside was how dark it was. She saw that she was in some kind of tunnel. She turned to her right and gasped at what she was looking at. In giant, cylinder tubes, there was something inside of them that she thought she'd never see again in her entire life.
"Grievers," she said. "Why the hell is this place keeping Grievers?"
After taking a good look at the Grievers, Piper looked back at the next set of doors ahead of her, using the keycard once again and slowly walking inside. What she saw was even more shocking than the Grievers. There were people everywhere. They were hanging off the ground, tubes and wires connected all over their bodies. There was also a tube for them to breathe into. She could hear them breathing, even though it seemed like they were dead.
Every single person that was on Janson's list ended up here. Piper's friends were in here as well.
While looking around, she spotted a familiar face. She got closer and gasped, putting her hand over her mouth. "Cora," she whispered. Beside her was Jane, then Shay, then down the rest of the line were all of her other friends. She suddenly felt overwhelmed by what she was seeing. That was when she remembered what the nurse said to her before she attacked her.
"WICKED is good," she repeated. Then, the realization hit her.
WICKED was behind all of this. This was all WICKED. Janson was working for them. They were never safe from WICKED, because they were the ones that brought them here.
Piper stormed out of the room and the two doors, ending up in the hallway once again. She wanted to talk to the two boys about all of this, but she had no idea where they were at.
Piper turned to the left and began walking down the hallway, trying to figure out where she needed to go next. All of a sudden, she heard footsteps approaching. Luckily, she was able to hide behind a wall on her right. Her back was against the wall when she heard voices talking.
"I can't believe that same kid tried to get by us tonight," one man said.
"He must really want to see that girl," another man added. "I don't see why he cares so much about her. She'll end up like the others sooner or later."
The first man scoffed in response. "That's if Right Arm attacks us like they attacked a couple of other facilities that we have."
"Where did you hear that bullshit from?"
"Oh, come on, everyone is talking about it. It's no secret that Right Arm is hiding in the mountains, according to Janson himself. They're just waiting for the right moment to attack us here."
The second man chuckled. "Whatever. I doubt Dr. Paige will let that happen."
"You don't know that. She wasn't able to stop the other two attacks. All she does it sit on her ass while she makes Janson and everyone else in this place do all the dirty work for her."
Dr. Paige? She's alive?
"By harvesting all the Immunes, you mean?"
"That's exactly what I mean. She claims that she's one step closer to finding a cure. She better figure out something sooner or later. I bet everyone is tired of waiting for a cure."
After they stopped talking, the two men began to walk closer to where Piper was at.
Okay, how can I get past those soldiers?
Suddenly, she walked out in front of the soldiers. One of them had blond hair and the other one had a bulky build to him.
"What are you doing out he--"
Out of nowhere, Piper kicked the blond one in the groin. The bulky one tried to grab her, but she elbowed him in the face. Even though he couldn't see her, he managed to get his hands on her arms and attempted to hold her down. Blondie stood up and pointed his gun at her. She kicked the gun out of his hand, watching it as it flew up in the air. Piper yanked her arm out of the other guard's grasp and caught the gun in the air before it fell to the ground and shot at Blondie across from her. Next, she swung the gun behind her, hitting the other guard on the side of his head. Then, she made a run for it.
"Get back here!" he shouted, running after her.
It was when Piper heard him get his gun that she spun around and shot him straight in the chest. She turned back around and kept running.
"Where the hell are those boys at?!" she asked in frustration.
Piper finally stopped running in the middle of the hallway, trying to catch her breath. She turned around, making sure no one else was behind her, then leaned against the wall and huffed a sigh.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Piper furrowed her brows, looking up at the ceiling. "What the--"
"You there! Don't move!" a man shouted at her from behind.
Piper jumped, spinning around and staring at him for a moment as he had his gun pointed at her. She took the gun that she had and pointed it at the man, shooting at him. Then, she made a run for it once again.
Adrenaline was pumping through her by the second. The sound of an alarm flooded through the hallway, followed by flashing, yellow lights in the hallways. She turned her head back around to see that she had barely lost the man that was chasing after her. But when Piper turned her head back around, she ran into someone, holding her gun up at them.
"Piper, it's Aris!" Aris shouted.
She looked over at the dark-skinned boy that was with him. "Who's this guy?"
"Winston," the boy replied. "I'm friends with Thomas."
Piper realized that Thomas wasn't here, then turned toward Aris. "Where's Thomas?" she asked, then widened her eyes. "Get down!" she shouted at the two.
They did as they were told, ducking to the ground as she aimed her gun at a guard that was running toward them. After she shot him, the boys stood back up.
"Let's get out of here," Winston said.
With that, the three began to run.
