For centuries the sea breeze has blown whispers of a deadly force across the land; a man, tempered by blood and flames, whose heart has long since turned to stone.

Legends of the Heartless King shroud Ria's kingdom in fear and many would starve before resorting to the sea.

But Ria has always felt the waves calling to her, and when her father's fateful actions bring darkness shattering into her life, she takes it upon herself to venture beyond the shores.

While hunger eats away at the rocky cliffs, Ria finds herself swept up in a dark and dangerous journey of pirates, vengeance and a love that haunts her in the darkest hours.

A stolen rose. An ancient curse. A heartless king.

Characters:

Not only are the characters written very well, but their every action and bit of dialogue is so interesting and pulls the reader in. The interactions between Ria and her father are incredibly creative, and I can tell a lot of thought has been put into this book. I absolutely love it. I know that Crown of Roses is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and not a Cinderella retelling, but Ria's sisters feel like they came from Cinderella's evil stepsisters. Did Belle even have sisters? Sorry, this could be a mistake on my end, but I don't remember there being sisters. That's the only thing I noticed in terms of character.

Plot/Storyline:

The retelling aspect of the book is perfectly incorporated. You can tell that this follows the Beauty and the Beast fairytale, but does it in such a creative way that it doesn't feel like reading the fairytale again. Some things that were drawn directly from the fairytale, like the reference to flowers and roses, are so creatively written into the story that I didn't even realize that they were significant to the original tale as well. I love how the "beast" is used. Instead of being a prince trapped in a castle, he's a sea captain trapped on a ship. The creativity of this retelling could rival that of Marissa Meyer's Cinder and the rest of the series. The only things I'm unsure of are the dreams and voices hinting at the "beast." I'm not a big fan of those tropes but since we know that she'll fall in love with him anyway, it's not a big deal.

World-building:

The world-building is slowly introduced, and even then, not all of the world is shown to the reader. But that's okay because the book is supposed to be focused on the characters and romance anyway. I love how the world is build through descriptions and everything surrounding her father's journey to sea.

Flow/Pacing:

The pacing is good from the beginning to where I stopped. Just when I felt like nothing was happening, the world went crazy. The flow between chapters is good, it didn't feel like I was taking a massive break in-between them.

Language/Grammar & Spelling

Can I just say, the descriptions and details in this book are gorgeous? There's such a magical feel to the descriptions. My only fear is that it may drag down the the book by preventing any action from happening. You clearly know what you're doing when it comes to writing a book. If the beginning is anything to judge by, I can completely see this as a published novel is targeted to the right audience. I was truly impressed with the lack of error in this book. I did not notice a single grammar or spelling mistake. Kudos to you.

~

I usually do a strengths and weaknesses part here, but I have almost nothing to comment on. All the things I've pointed out are nitpicky details, this book is truly one of the best I've read here on Wattpad. You know your way around a story, keep it up!
