Chapter Fourteen
~Shota's POV~
I woke lying in a hospital bed, thankful the lights were out as my eyes were killing me. My entire body was wrapped in bandages. The faint smell of Arisa's vanilla conditioner wafted in the air around me. Turning my head as much as I could I spotted her slumped in a chair at my bedside. There were thick bloody bandages that wound around her biceps all the way across her shoulder stretching up to her neck. She'd been injured, badly. Her skin was lifelessly pale indicating she'd lost a lot of blood. There was a hospital band around her wrist and I saw tell tale signs that she'd recently ripped out an IV or three.
"Arisa?" My voice cracked as I called out to her.
Her body jerked and her dark onyx eyes fluttered open. A small smile claimed her lips as she met my gaze, "All the students are safe, only the fanboy got hurt but he and All Might are recovering fine and Thirteen is stable...How are you feeling?"
Relief flooded through me at the news that everyone was alright. "Numb mostly." I replied as I looked over her bleeding bandages, "You?"
She shrugged not seeming the least bit bothered by the motion even though I was sure it had to have aggravated her injuries, "You're not going to believe me but honestly I feel fine...this is nothing so stop looking so worried." Her smile slipped, "Though, I guess I feel a little bad because I was planning to take today off as a personal day like you told me and was going to beg you to stay home with me today, but those stupid villains ruined it."
"You were actually going to listen to me?" I mused.
She folded her arms in front of her and rolled her eyes, "It happens every now and then, don't act so surprised."
"Were you released from the hospital?" I asked her with a frown, there was an alarming amount of blood seeping out of her bandages.
She held up her release papers, "It took some convincing, but after I popped his arm out of socket, the doctor thought it best to sign them as I'd proven I was fine."
I sighed, "You are without a doubt, the worst patient... So, what was going to be on our agenda today?" I asked her as I tried to settle back and relax.
As if she knew exactly what I needed, she reached over to adjust my hospital bed before pulling a bottle of my eye drops out of her pocket. She administered the drops with expert care, providing instant relief before sitting back in her chair. "Well, first, I was thinking for breakfast, ice cream in bed."
"That sounds like a terrible idea. What else?"
"I thought maybe I'd try my hand at being a dominatrix." She teased.
"I see that going horribly." I chuckled causing her to crack a smile.
"After ice cream, I thought we could go to the firing range."
"You're the only person who thinks that's romantic." I smiled.
She ignored me, "Then maybe a trip to the beach, we could build sand forts or something."
"Pretty sure they're called sand castles."
"I don't know about you, Shota, but a sand castle doesn't sound nearly as stable as a sand fort complete with tanks and rocket launchers." She giggled.
I couldn't help but smile at the sound of her laughter, it was rare and beautiful and made everything seem better. "What else?"
"Lunch."
"More ice cream?" I mused.
"That's ridiculous, obviously it would be frozen yogurt, lunch should be lighter."
I chuckled, "After lunch?"
"Rock Climbing."
"With or without safety gear?"
"I'm all the safety gear you need." She scoffed.
"What frozen treat did you have planned for dinner?" I asked her with a smile.
"Pfft. Obviously, we'd make a monstrously unhealthy banana split back at home and watch some terrible horror films."
"You had the whole day planned...I'm sorry." Guilt wormed through me.
"You'd really go along with all of it?" Arisa asked curiously.
"If that's what you wanted to do."
She leaned forward and kissed me trying to be gentle so she wouldn't irritate any of my mending wounds. "I love you, Shota."
"I love you too, Arisa."
"Don't worry, I'm sure you can convince me to take another personal day sometime in the future when you don't look like a homeless mummy." She smiled.
A knock at the door made her body tense, reflexively she reached for her firearm before turning to the door. Her body relaxed as the door opened and her brother in law, Hideo, stepped into the room with a small toddler with raven curls and bright green eyes wearing a frilly purple dress in his arms.
"Here's Auntie Ari, Hana, and I thought security would have hauled her out by now." Hideo spoke in baby talk to the toddler in his arms, "Oof, Uncle Shota is looking like a hot mess."
Arisa holstered her gun and got to her feet as her brothers followed Hideo into the room with Ayame wheeling in Akio's chair. She took the toddler from Hideo's arms causing the toddler to instantly giggle and cling to her. Before their father died, Ayame approached Arisa and asked if she'd be willing to be a surrogate for them and use her egg and Hideo's sperm to make a baby for them. Arisa agreed on the condition that it was after the wedding. She'd gone to see a specialist with Hideo and Ayame and found that due to something that had happened in her past, from some injury she'd received, she wasn't able to carry a child. The doctors were able to extract a viable egg from her but they had to get a different surrogate to carry the baby. Arisa refused to talk about the injury that had caused her to be unable to carry a child and would shut down anytime I brought up the subject.
"I don't think your daddy's very funny, Hana." Arisa looked down at the toddler in her arms.
Hana giggled before wrapping her hand in Arisa's raven hair before laying her small head on Arisa's chest. She sucked on her thumb and drifted to sleep, it was a habit she had anytime Arisa held her.
"How are you two doing?" Akio asked us both as he rolled to a stop at my bedside.
"I was fine enough to be released." Arisa shrugged as she gently rubbed Hana's back and rocked her in her arms.
"And am I going to get a phone call first thing Monday morning about you harassing a doctor?" Akio grinned.
"Who can say." Arisa smiled.
"How about you Shota?" Akio turned to me.
"I haven't assaulted any medical staff." I assured him.
"The doctor said he can come home tomorrow morning, they just want to keep him another night for monitoring." Arisa added.
"Did you assault anyone for that information?" Akio mused.
"I didn't assault him, I just cornered him in the men's room and made him tell me."
Hideo, Akio and Ayame laughed at this.
"Arisa." I groaned.
"If he would have just told me the status the moment I woke up, it wouldn't have been a problem, he was avoiding me on purpose!" She huffed.
"Probably because you nearly broke your doctors' arm." I pointed.
"It wasn't even close to a break, I didn't apply nearly enough pressure for that. I just popped his arm out of socket. Don't be so dramatic, Shota." She rolled her onyx eyes as she dropped back into her chair with the toddler in her arms.
"Speaking of dramatic, mom saw the news...she should be here any minute." Akio pointed.
Arisa paled.
Twenty seconds later the door flew open and their mother appeared in the doorway with tears in her eyes. She'd become quite fragile after the death of her husband. She hugged Arisa and attempted to hug me but luckily Arisa stopped her as I had a feeling the only reason, I wasn't in a lot of pain was because Arisa had talked to my doctor to keep my pain meds up and kept everyone away from me.
After a long tearful visit, Arisa sent her family away promising to call them if anything changed and keep them posted. Not too long after the Nakamura's left, Hizashi showed up with All Might in his weakened skeletal like form as Arisa looked like she was ready to collapse from the stress inducing visit from her family.
"Whoa Metalmura, are you supposed to be out of bed?" Hizashi asked warily as he looked to Arisa sitting tensely in the chair next to my bed.
She threw her hospital release papers at him and shot him a glare. He struggled to catch them and looked them over with a frown but said nothing more as he didn't want to push her over the edge in her current condition. Both All Might and Hizashi were dressed like civilians, Hizashi had his long blonde hair pulled back in a loose bun and was wearing a pair of jeans, a band tee and a simple black jacket, All Might was drowning in an oversized t-shirt and a pair of cargo pants that were easily five times too big.
All Might claimed the only other chair in the room across from Arisa. Hizashi decided to poke the bear and scooped Arisa into his arms before stealing her chair placing her on his lap. I shook my head as Arisa caught him in a painful headlock and fell into a forward roll taking him with her. There were some scuffling sounds on the ground next to my bed mixed with a few yelps of pain from Hizashi before I heard him smacking the floor repeatedly squealing 'uncle, uncle, uncle'.
Arisa rose to her feet and returned to her chair shooting Hizashi a threatening glare. "Don't touch me, Noise Box."
"But there aren't anymore chairs." He grumbled before attempting to sit at the foot of my bed. I winced sympathetically as Arisa lunged at him, going into overprotective lioness mode. Before either All Might or I had a chance to utter anything to stop him, Arisa took him down in a complex grapple not even remotely hindered by her wounds.
I looked to All Might curiously tuning out of Hizashi's whining as Arisa was probably in the process of dislocating his shoulder. "What brings you here, All Might?"
"I thought I'd stop by to check on you and give you a status report, but I imagine the Chief filled you in."
"She just told me everyone was alright, we've been swarmed with guests since, so we haven't had much of a chance to talk." I noted and rolled my eyes as I saw Arisa jump to her feet and dive to the floor with her elbow like a pro wrestler.
"Should I break that up?" All Might asked me warily as Hizashi yelled for help.
"Not unless you want to be her next opponent."
All Might nodded and turned his attention back to me. "We're still trying to identify the two that got away, they call themselves The League of Villa-."
"Hey!" Arisa shot to her feet and shot All Might a threatening look, "No work talk!" She placed her hands on her hips as her body tensed preparing to launch herself at him at any moment.
"I wanted to know." I pointed.
"I don't care, no work talk, you're in the hospital, when we go home tomorrow you can have all the work talk you want." She huffed.
"Why does it matter?" I sighed.
"It makes no difference if he tells you now or at home you can't do anything about it and I'd rather you be resting here without concerning yourself with it, you can worry about it tomorrow." She wasn't budging.
All Might chuckled.
"Which two got away?" I asked All Might curiously.
Arisa executed a graceful twisting flip over my bed and landed in front of All Might's chair before kicking one of the legs until the chair spun around so he was facing the opposite direction. "You can talk about it tomorrow." She turned her glare on me.
I could see the steady rise and fall of her chest, she was breathing heavily. She'd pushed herself too much. "Alright, will you please sit down..." The blood seeping from her bandages was spreading now the bandages were more red and pink than white.
"Fine." She slowly walked around to the opposite side of the bed. As she got to where Hizashi had finally gotten to his feet her knees buckled.
Hizashi caught her in his arms and instinctively cringed waiting for her to yell at him or lash out, but she didn't. He looked down at her worriedly as she slumped into his arms gasping for breath. Her cheeks looked flushed. "Hey, Metalmura, take it easy. You don't have to overdo it, I'll watch over Shota for you." He swept her off her feet. She didn't protest, which concerned me. Hizashi turned to me, looking worried.
"Bring her here." I sighed as her head dropped onto his shoulder as she slipped into unconsciousness as months' worth of overworking and pushing herself too hard finally caught up with her.
Hizashi hesitated but lightly dumped her onto the bed at my side. "I forgot how scary she can be." He rubbed his aching shoulder before draping his jacket over top of her. "Should I call her a doctor?"
I shook my head, "She threatened the last one to fill out her release papers, I don't think they're going to step in unless she's in critical condition."
With Arisa unconscious, All Might filled me in on everything I'd missed before taking his leave. Hizashi stayed as he had promised Arisa and took up post in the chair she'd abandoned, to watch over us.
