Chapter Ten
Arisa's POV
A month after the undercover incident, I was slowly starting to let my guard down around Shota more often. I'd let him into my world little by little and he still wanted to be my side, for some reason. I didn't understand him or why he thought I was someone that was worth getting to know, but it was nice having him around.
He helped me prepare for the Hero Licensing Test, his noisy friend often tagged along during our training sessions though I couldn't complain too much. He made for a great punching bag. When I'd registered for the Hero License Test a few members of the board expressed concern for my lack of quirk but allowed me to take the test. A few of the other applicants laughed when they realized I was quirkless, though I noticed those who were first to laugh were also the first to fall during some of the trials.
I managed to make it through the test completely unscathed and passed with flying colors. As I left the facility with the papers approving me to get my Hero License, I paused as I spotted a crowd of familiar faces waiting outside. My parents, Akio, Ayame and Hideo were standing with Hizashi and Shota. Frowning, I stepped out of the building, I hadn't even told my family I was taking the Hero License Test.
"Well, how'd it go?" Hizashi asked me impatiently.
I held up the papers, "I passed, obviously."
"Don't look so excited about it, Metalmura." He chuckled but let out a yelp of terror as I shot a glare in his direction.
I ignored him as my family swarmed me with hugs and praise. "What are you all doing here?" I asked somewhat stiffly as my mother began talking rapidly about needing to throw a party to congratulate me on getting my Hero License.
"Shota invited us." My mother pinched me in the side, "Why are you being so rude?"
I threw a wary look in Akio's direction. I'd been afraid to tell him. It was his dream to be a hero, I'd been planning on keeping it a secret being an underground hero, behind the scenes. Akio was smiling brighter than anyone else and pulled me in for a bone crushing hug.
"I'm so happy for you, Ari."
"I'm sorry, for not telling you myself, I was a little worried..."
"I'm just happy someone in the family gets to be a hero." Akio smiled, "And you are completely aware you have to call me at the end of every day no matter how boring or mundane, and tell me everything. Full report."
I couldn't help but laugh at this, "That sounds tiring, maybe I should retire, now."
My mother realized then, why I'd been so secretive and pat me on the back. "So, are you going to retire from the police force now?" My mother asked me curiously.
"Not a chance. I'll do both."
"What?!" Everyone stared at me in awe.
"I'll be a hero in my spare time and work my way up through the ranks." I shrugged.
"Sweetheart, that's too much, you'll burn out." My mother frowned and looked to my father and brothers for help.
"What's the goal?" Akio asked curiously.
"Rank in the top 5 as a hero and become the Chief of Police." I smiled.
"If anyone can do it, you can." Akio beamed.
"Let's go for a celebratory dinner at the club, everyone's invited." My mother clasped her hands together in delight trying to keep the mood positive.
It was impossible to tell her no. The country club was stuffy and filled with snobs and I didn't really want to go, but she looked so happy. I couldn't say no. "Alright." I sighed reluctantly, "But I have to fill out some paperwork first."
"I'll take care of it for you." Hizashi offered with a smile, snatching the papers from my hand.
"What? Why?"
"I'm kind of a pro at it and so you can celebrate with everyone. I'll meet you guys there." He grinned. I had a bad feeling that I shouldn't trust him with this but my mother seemed to think this was good enough and tucked my arm in hers before whisking me away.
Reluctantly, I let my family pull me away and looked back to make sure Shota was still with us. He followed along engaging in polite conversation with my father. Once we got to the parking lot, I helped Akio into the car and turned to walk away.
"Arisa, honey, aren't you riding with us?" My mother asked with a frown.
"We'll take the bike." I placed my hand on Shota's shoulder clutching it in a death grip. He winced but didn't say a word. "Meet you there." I waved as I steered him into the parking lot to find my bike.
"You're upset." Shota noted with a frown.
"Get on the bike." I glowered as I swung my leg over the bike and revved the engine.
Shota sighed and got on the bike behind me, I barely gave him a moment to put his arms around my waist before I went flying out of the parking lot with a loud squealing of tires, peeling out in a fury. His grip on my waist tightened as I tore out of the parking lot giving the bike all the throttle. We weaved in and out of cars, flying toward the open road.
Driving so fast that my surroundings blurred calmed my rage. Feeling Shota behind me clinging to me for dear life gave me a satisfying feeling of control that helped soothe me. In no time at all, we came to a screeching stop at the country club. Shota stumbled off the bike and I turned on him.
"What the fuck did you tell them for?"
"Why didn't you want your family to know? They all seemed happy."
"It's safer for them, if they don't know."
Shota frowned. "You don't think they would have found out eventually?"
"In case you've forgotten, I'm quite good at hiding things." I glowered.
"It looked like it made Akio very happy."
"That's the only reason I'm not attacking you right now." I huffed. "I'm sure you've figured out by now, I like to be in control of situations and I hate surprises, don't spring shit on me."
"Noted." He chuckled.
My family arrived and we all made our way inside the country club and were led to a private dining room and served drinks and appetizers. Half way through appetizers Hizashi joined us grinning like a fool.
"What's wrong with the idiot?" I looked over to Shota with a frown.
"Who can say." He shrugged as Hizashi dropped into the seat next to me after greeting my family.
"Here's your official hero license, Metalmura."
A terrifying thought crossed my mind, wasn't I supposed to give them a hero name to call myself. "You better not have done what I think you've done." I hissed as I snatched the license away from him. The first thing that popped off the small laminated license was 'Hero Alias: Metalmura' "YOU.ARE.DEAD!"
"EEP!" Hizashi let out a yelp and hit the floor as I swung my fist at him with enough force it would have cracked his skull.
Shota snatched the license from my hands as my fist splintered the chair Hizashi had been sitting in seconds before.
"GET BACK HERE!" I snarled as Hizashi rolled under the table to get out of my way.
"HELP!" Hizashi panicked as I flipped over the dining table.
My family calmly continued sipping at their wine not seeming the least bit perturbed by my behavior. Shota didn't know whether to laugh at the absurdity of the situation or keep me from killing his roommate. Akio chuckled and took the license from Shota before laughing.
"Oh, yeah, he's dead alright." Akio chuckled as he passed the license down the table.
"How dare he." Hideo gasped, "That's going to be difficult for us to design a costume around." He exchanged a look with Ayame as he handed off the license.
"Not flattering at all." Ayame agreed and kept the card going.
"Oh, it's cute, I like it." My mother smiled, "Arisa, darling, don't kill him, please. Your father and I already made a hefty donation to the club this year, we really don't want to write another check."
Everyone at the table burst out laughing at my mother's calm handling of my murderous rage just as I managed to catch the squealing Hizashi in a headlock.
"We'll settle this later." I hissed at him venomously as I released him from my hold.
