There is a starved dog gone feral in the back of my throat.
More often than not, the dog that bites is the dog that thinks he has no other option. I feel as though my body language must constantly be screaming: "If you do not keep your fingers out of the bars you are going to get them torn off" with my ears back and my teeth bared and my pupils blown wide, chest always heaving, pulse jumping erratically. Backed into the corner of my kennel by the world at large.

[ excerpt from "Behind The Static" written by biographer, Lynn Townsend]
INTERVIEWER: So, let's go back to the early days of the band. It feels like there's a lot that people still don't know, especially now that so much time has passed. You all rose so quickly in the 1980s, right? There was this electric energy in the air, and then, just as fast as it all happened, it seemed like everything fell apart. What do you think really caused the split?
WREN CARNEGIE (former lead singer of Wren & The Static): [Laughs softly] Well, that's the question, isn't it? Everyone's always wondered what happened behind closed doors. I don't think anyone really understood it back then. At least, not fully.
The fans, the press, they only saw what we let them to see, or rather, what Lenny Cross (former publicist for Wren & The Static) allowed them to see. But we had our secrets. Big ones. And some of those secrets . . . well, they're only coming to light now, after all these years.
INTERVIEWER: You mean the things that were going on between you all? The tension, and the personal struggles that bled onto stage?
WREN: Yeah, a lot of people assumed it was just about the music or the fame. But it was so much more complicated than that. There were friendships that turned into rivalries, things we were dealing with that no one could've possibly known. It wasn't just one thing, it was a whole storm of things that finally reached a tipping point. It was like . . . [Pauses, an elusive expression on her face]
Like we were all drowning in this bigger narrative that none of us could quite control.
INTERVIEWER: I've heard stories over the years. About fights, about egos. But it sounds like there's more to it than just that.
WREN: [Pauses once more, before straightening and regaining a brief loss of composure] Oh, there's a lot more. That's the surface level. I can't speak for everyone, but . . . there were dark things happening behind the scenes that no one could have predicted.
And I'm not talking about silly nonsense. This was bigger. A lot of it, we kept hidden for the sake of keeping the band together, for the sake of our careers. Some of us made deals with ourselves, telling ourselves that we could handle it. But, in the end, it all unraveled. Call it fate.
INTERVIEWER: And now, all these years later, it's becoming clear that there was something much darker at play?
WREN: Yeah, I don't think any of us wanted to face it when it was happening. But now, in hindsight . . . looking back, it's hard not to see it for what it was. We were all living in our own confines, trying to keep everything afloat, but we were splitting at the seams. And we didn't know how to fix it. Or maybe we were too afraid to even try.
INTERVIEWER: Do you think the band could have survived if you had all confronted those issues earlier? If the secrets had come out then?
WREN: [Sighs] I don't know. Honestly, I'm not sure. We all had our breaking points. But I think if we'd been more honest, if we'd been willing to open up, even just a little, it might have been different.
It's the silence, the not talking about it, that did the most damage. And now, well, it's too late for some things. But maybe it's not too late for others. That's what this is all about now, isn't it? Getting it out in the open, all these years later.

🎸 this story in particular is going to be
a lot different than the others i've published,
both in terms of layout and perspective. it's
basically a combo of hive mind's writing style
& chevalier's. i've had this idea festering in my
mind for quite some time now and i'm
FINALLY able to really delve into this little
made up universe. wren & the static are very
near and dear to my heart. this story will
cover lots of heavy themes, so please
please please be advised.
🪽 the writing style and setup is heavily
inspired by the profound, taylor jenkins reid
(my literary queen). this story has taken inspo
from daisy jones & the six, almost famous,
a star is born, and my everlasting love for
the 80's.
🖤 the characters in this story are very
complex. i'd like to think this is the distant
cousin spinoff to chevalier & hive mind. if
you haven't read either of those, i recommend
doing so, even though the plots definitely
don't coincide or anything, just some
shameless self promo <3
🎸 a special thanks to my angel,

and willing to hear my random plot spiels,
including this one. you're my girl forever.
