Massive changes took place over the years with a boom in its population from 12,000 in 1974 to 80,000 in 2004 with an addition of 50,000 tourist beds when it was turned into a major European tourist resort.

In 1974, the fishing village was located on the seashore next to the habour. To its north west were a village, woodland and an olive farm and to its north east were another village and a farm where sheep and goats were raised.

In 2004, the fishing village remained unchangedin its location and size; however, the surrounding area totally transformedinto a large tourist resort. The once clear seafront in 1974 was now crowded byhotels that were built along the coastline. The woodland was cleared to makeway for a golf course while the olive farm was replaced by farmland thatproduced fruits and vegetables for local hotels.
