5. The Fun and Hectic World Building
Welcome to one of the most fun and hectic parts of writing your novel.
The World Building!
But before we begin, let's go over a simple summary of what's about for new beginner writers out there!
What is worldbuilding?
To keep it sweet and simple, world-building is mostly in a story when you create an imaginary world or universe for the use of storytelling.
Interestingly, coherent world-building is essential in fiction books, particularly in the fantasy and sci-fi genres.
This is something I wish I knew before going into writing stories with Fantasy, Romance, and Action-Adventure.
So, what is good world-building?
Effective worldbuilding creates a captivating story while placing the events in an imaginary world that is intriguingly different from our own. It is concise and closely tied to the plot and central themes. Depending on the subgenre, readers will have varying expectations for the amount of worldbuilding. For instance, an epic fantasy novel typically requires more extensive worldbuilding than an urban fantasy book, a World War II video game, or a science fiction story.
Based on my experience, creating an outline for world-building has significantly improved my story's progress. If you can plan your characters while developing your world, I recommend doing so.
If you still not sure, let me as you: why is it important?
If you're still uncertain, let me ask you: Why is worldbuilding important?
Worldbuilding is an enjoyable process for both authors and their readers. Effective worldbuilding enhances any narrative, including its plot and characters. It establishes crucial expectations regarding the era, customs, laws, and more. Many readers need a clear visualization of the world to fully engage with a book.In science fiction and fantasy genres, worldbuilding is essential, as readers have certain expectations. They can feel disappointed if the fictional world is underdeveloped.
Adding more from my experience, this is the main reason why I haven't published any chapters for my book, "The Tale Of The Siren."
Let's continue!
Every genre of fiction can utilize effective worldbuilding to enhance storytelling. For example, in a non-magical plot set in a small town in New Hampshire, worldbuilding might involve:
- Describing the social structure at the local school
- Mentioning the only grocery store in town
- Highlighting the amusingly small park
- Detailing the town's history
- Gossiping about the townsfolk
These elements help create a vivid and engaging setting for the narrative.
However, I did make a template for a world-building outline. In addition, if you have a certain genre you want to see me create, feel free to comment or have suggestions!
Before I wrap up this second, I want to leave some points when in the process of worlding building:
1. Draw from real-liife cultures
2. Invent strange customs that hook your reader
3. Craft a religion and consider how it affects society
4. Construct a magic system
5. Decide which occupations this society most values
6. Figure out how their laws differ from the real world
7. Give every significant location memorable geography
8. Write down a detailed history of your fictional world
9. Hint at worldbuilding details during dialogue
10. Consider if a change in culture could drive your story
11. Determine the world's technology level
12. Start with your characters
13 Avoid idioms from the real world
14. Only use 10% of your world building
15. Don't overplan if it delsays the book
