Chapter 36: Where The Bullet Landed
Everyone is down on the floor. We all ducked to avoid the bullet.
But it didn't work. It hit.
My breathing is heavy.
I don't wanna make eye contact with anyone. Not even Michael.
He was gonna catch the bullet for me if it came my way. But I can't tell if it did or not.
No one is moving. We're all numb from shock.
Daniel and The Jax are down on the floor, not moving.
Michael is next to me, clutching my coat for dear life.
I can't tell who the bullet caught, I can't even tell if it was me!
I have a little confidence though, I don't think it's me that the bullet struck.
I'm feeling pain, but I think it's just mental pain, and if it's physical, it's from shock, and from when Daniel kicked me.
"Michael.." I whisper, my voice weak from shock.
My eyes are filling with tears.
"Who did the bullet hit?" I ask nervously.
I turn my head ever so slowly to face Michael.
"Was it you the bullet hit.. are you ok?" he asks softly.
I shrug my shoulders.
"I don't know.. I don't know if it was me," I cry quietly, trying to move my body towards Michael.
I lift myself up ever so slightly, and I'm the first one to do so. Michael takes me into his embrace and I look at his head.
His hair has blood in it.
"Michael.. You've got blood in your hair.." I whisper with a tone of worry, pointing at his bloodstained hair.
He fingers a lock of his curls and looks at his hand, at the blood. He gasps, but then has a thought.
"I think it's from when Daniel kicked you. It must have backlashed onto me.." he whispers.
Ok.. Ok.
Michael's ok.
That's one down. Only about eight people to go. And me.
We have to find out who the bullet hit. I know Michael's ok.
I walk slowly to the members of The Jax, wobbling from shock. Michael follows, holding my waist to keep me up.
I tap Kieran's shoulder, and he lifts his head.
"Kieran, are you alright?" I ask weakly. He nods.
"Yeah, I don't think the bullet got me," he says. I help him up.
"C'mon, let's go see the others," Michael says.
Kieran taps Sammy's shoulder.
"Sammy, are you ok?" he asks. Sammy nods.
"Yeah.. I'm ok," he says. He gets himself up. I tap Cameron's back.
"Cameron?" I call quietly. He looks up at me.
"Yeah..?" he says, getting himself up.
"You're ok?" I ask.
"Yeah.. I think so," he says.
Michael taps Wayne's head. Wayne lifts his head.
"I think I'm ok," he says. He sits up on the floor.
"Miles?" I call out. He looks up at me.
"Yeah, I'm ok too," he says. He gets up.
"Christopher.." I call softly.
"I'm good. I'm fine," he says with a faint smile.
He sits himself up and looks around nervously.
"Rachel.." Kieran calls softly. Rachel lifts her head.
"Well, this day didn't go exactly to plan did it..?" she asks dejectedly, but with a hint of anger. I roll my eyes.
"Just be glad you're still alive," I say sternly. She shrugs.
"Have you checked Mark?" she asks.
Oh! What about Mark?
"Mark, are you ok?" I call out. He looks up.
"Yes.. I'm ok," he says with a small smile.
"The bullet didn't hit any of us," I say.
Michael hugs me from behind and Mark looks around.
"I think I know where the bullet went," he says, pointing.
"Oh god.. I didn't even think of Daniel.. Daniel?" I ask.
I walk to Daniel, who is the only one who hasn't reacted to anything. I shake him violently.
"Daniel?!" I call out, and I turn him so he lies on his back.
He flops over, not waking up.
Then, I see blood in his hair and in his sideburns.
"I think.. I think he's dead.." I whisper.
Michael comes up behind and hugs me gently.
"There's no pulse," Kieran says, taking his hand away from Daniel's wrist.
"How did this happen? He was the one holding the gun!" I scream. Michael strokes my hair.
"When Kieran pushed him.. It must have knocked the gun's position and aimed it at Daniel by accident.." Miles says.
I cry out in shock. I'm shaking. I'm sweating. I can barely breathe.
"Calm down, baby, calm down," Michael tells me, stroking my back gently.
"Why am I worked up about this? Why am I sad about this?! He tried to kill me!" I cry out loudly.
"It's normal, baby, you're shocked! You're all over the place! It isn't his death that's got to you, it's what he did to you before he died. He tried to kill you, you deserve the right to cry about it," Michael says.
My cries become quieter and quieter, until I fall silent.
I can barely even cry out now, I'm in that much shock, and pain.
Kieran strokes my arm, and Wayne places his hand on my shoulder.
Michael is hugging me from behind, his head leant on my shoulder. Sammy is on the floor by Daniel, along with Christopher and Miles.
Mark is sat, lost in his own little world. Cameron is still checking for Daniel's pulse with no success.
I'm sat with Michael on the grass now. It's more calm, but the memories of the past hour will never be erased from any of our minds.
I lean my head back against Michael's chest, he's behind me, I'm sitting between his legs.
We know who was killed. Daniel.
I still find it strange that he managed to get the gun to face him. It's gonna make me wonder forever.
"Are you alright, baby?" Michael asks quietly.
We don't even know what to do with Daniel. He's just lying there.
The way he looks is scaring me. I don't like it.
"Yeah.. Can't we get someone to take Daniel away?" I ask. Michael shrugs.
"I don't know. People will think one of us killed him. But we didn't.." he says.
"We're gonna have to go back to school at some point," I say, changing the subject completely. Michael sighs.
"Yeah, but, let's leave that for a couple months. We gotta get back on our feet, calm ourselves down from all of this," he says. I nod.
"I know, I know.. It's just, maybe it'll take our minds off of everything that's happened," I say. Michael nods.
"Yeah, I guess. Do you wanna go home?" he asks.
"Yeah, I wanna get this park outta my thoughts for now. But what about Daniel? What are we meant to do about him?" I ask.
Michael turns his head to Kieran, who is covering Daniel's head with his bloodstained hoodie.
"Hey, Kieran?" Michael calls.
Kieran walks over, a faint smile on his face.
"Michael?" he says.
"Would you call an ambulance or something, have Daniel taken away? I need to get Becky home, she's really shaken up about all this," Michael says. Kieran nods.
"Of course. I'll do it right after you leave," he says.
"Thank you Kieran. And, look. All the Jax stuff, will you end it now?" Michael asks innocently. Kieran sighs.
"It was Daniel's gang. I think half of us joined for the same reason you did. I'm sure only a couple of us genuinely are bad," he says. Sammy comes over.
"I'm not really bad," he says sheepishly in his little German accent.
Wayne, Christopher and Miles come over with Cameron and Mark. Rachel follows after.
"Me and Cameron weren't ever bad," Wayne admits.
"Neither was I," Christopher says.
"I was. But I'm not now," Miles says.
Mark nods in agreement.
"Yeah, I think the only time I ever was bad was when I dumped Emma. Over a year ago. I regret leaving her now," he says. Rachel scoffs.
"Yeah, oh, "I was never bad, either!" All you guys are just leaving the real you for a wimpy, puny, little version of you, you're all pathetic! I'm bad, I always have been, I never stopped. Cos I know who I really am. I don't know how all of you are fine with Daniel being dead on the floor, you should hate yourselves! Cos I know I hate you!" she growls.
Michael gets up for a moment, leaving me alone on the floor.
"Now listen here, Scarlettson! Can you not see my girlfriend sitting there, almost dying from shock?! Cos I think I do! How have you got nerve to talk to any of us like that after what has just happened?!"
Michael verbally attacks Rachel, prodding her chest violently to get her attention. She pushes his finger away and scoffs again.
"At least I give a damn about someone when they're dead! Your chick over there, she's gonna be soon!" Rachel laughs evilly.
She runs to Daniel, takes his gun and spins round to face me. I stand myself up, to try and get away.
"NOO!" Michael cries, his voice husky from how loud his voice has actually gone.
His shout echoes through the park, the sound waves rolling up the fields and back down again, along with the noise of..
BANG!
I can't even.. I can't feel anything but pain right now.
I stand stunned for a moment. Then, my mind lets my hands touch my chest.
I lift my hands to find them covered with blood.
Rachel just.. she shot me.
Michael watches me as I collapse to the floor, pain taking over my body.
His eyes fill with tears and he runs over to me.
"Becky!" he cries.
He takes my coat off and stares down at my chest.
"Oh god, you've got blood on your shirt!" he cries.
I don't even care about the condition my clothes are in. I only care about me right now, thanks.
"Ughn," I groan as a new rush of pain goes through my chest.
Michael holds me close and nuzzles his head close to mine.
"You'll be ok, baby, you'll be ok. You're gonna be ok," he vows.
I hope so. I really hope so, Michael.
"It hurts.." I cry.
"I know it does, but try and hang on in there, please! Please!" Michael begs, his eyes filling with tears.
I look over at Rachel, who obviously seems satisfied at her latest bad deed. I hate her.
I hate her so much for ruining my life, alongside Daniel.
"Someone call an ambulance, please! Anyone!" he calls out. Kieran's already on it.
"Got it," he says, dialling the number right away.
"Yeah, an ambulance please. Gary Central Park. Quickly, please!" he cries down the phone.
I hear him end the call and he places the phone in his pocket.
"It hurts.." I whimper softly.
Michael cradles me in his arms. Well, isn't this a turn of the tables.
First Daniel, now probably me.
Michael kisses my sweaty forehead as we wait for the ambulance to come.
"Don't let go, baby, please, don't let go."
Author's note: now, tell me how many of you expected THAT? Wow, looks like a double shootout! Sorry I took so long updating, but I hope it was worth it! That should keep you interested😉! We know Daniel's dead, but Becky? We shall see..
