Chapter 42: Michael's Perfect Birthday

The following morning, I wake Michael up with a series of gentle kisses on his neck.

"Wake up, birthday boy," I chuckle as his eyes flutter.

I know he's awake, but he pretends to be sleeping.

He exhales loudly, before turning on his side. Now his back is facing me.

I lean my stomach on his side and place my head opposite his.

"C'mon, it's your birthday," I whisper.

He still doesn't reply.

"Am I gonna have to tickle you?" I ask.

He finally turns back my way, rubbing his eyes.

"Just five more minutes.. Please.." he begs in his deep, husky voice.

Hmm, I love that voice. I sigh loudly.

"Michael, I don't wanna have to tickle you. It's your birthday. I wanna be nice. But I'll only be nice if you're nice," I say.

He doesn't react.

"Ok, fine. I gave you a chance," I chuckle.

I gently place my fingers over his shirtless chest and tickle him. He jerks up, trying to defend his body from the tickle attack I'm giving him.

"Oh! Ok! Ok! Fine, I'm up! Gees, you'd think I'd be allowed some freedom on my birthday!" he giggles, rubbing his eyes again.

He sits himself up fully and looks into my eyes.

"Happy birthday," I say with a smile.

He kisses my lips. "Thanks baby."

"How does it feel to be in the early 30s?" I ask.

He cringes a little then looks at me.

"30 years old isn't early 30s, it's late 20s!" he cries with a little giggle.

"Ok, sure," I say.

I drag him out of bed. He puts a shirt on quickly before I start to drag him.

"Hey! Oh, hey! Where are we going?!" he cries as I drag him down the stairs violently.

"Oh, so you don't want to open your presents?" I ask. Michael's eyes widen.

"But I thought you already gave it to me," he says.

"No, Michael. Remember you have family, too? And, I still have a couple of smaller things to give you," I say. He smiles gratefully.

"You didn't have to get me anything more, but thank you," he giggles softly.

We get to the living room door, and I open it. The room is dark.

"Hmm, tad dark," Michael states the obvious.

"Really? I hadn't noticed," I reply sarcastically.

He chuckles at my remark, and I switch the lights on.

"SURPRISE!"

All of Michael's family leaps out of nowhere, making Michael jump.

He immediately smiles upon seeing his mother, Katherine.

"Mother!" he cries, hugging her tightly.

"I missed you, honey," she says.

They let go of the hug.

"So, now you know Becky," Michael says. Katherine nods.

"Yep. I sure do. She's lovely, Michael," she says. I blush a little.

"Oh, thanks," I smile.

Katherine hugs me and looks into my eyes.

"I know you're going to be the perfect couple," she says.

"Thank you, Katherine," I say.

She turns to Michael.

"Would you like the presents, now, sweetie?" she asks him. Michael nods.

"I would love to, mother," he says.

Katherine takes us to the carpet. She sets Michael down on the floor, with me next to him.

She hands him her present. Michael shakes it.

"Hmm, interesting shape," he says.

He carefully unwraps the paper. He chuckles when he sees the present inside.

"You got me a SuperSoaker!" he chuckles.

"A SuperSoaker?" I ask. Katherine smiles.

"Oh, yes! Did Michael not tell you? When he was little, he used to love SuperSoakers! He had every kinda water gun you cold imagine! His brothers hated him for it!" Katherine explains.

"Yeah, it wasn't fun!" Jermaine comes outta nowhere and says.

Michael admires the water gun box.

"You never fail to make me laugh, mother," he says.

Jermaine, Randy, Jackie, Marlon and Tito come forward to give their presents. Marlon's present is first.

"Oh, you got me.. ha! God, a new pair of leather gloves? Thank you," Michael says, taking the gloves from the wrapping and placing one on his left hand. Tito's is next.

"Ha.. thanks Tito. You got me "A Guide To Getting Girls".. uh, I already got a girl," Michael chuckles, hitting Tito gently upside the head with the book.

Tito chuckles.

"It's just in case you fail with Becky!" he smirks.

Tito really is a joker. Next is Jackie.

"Thank you, Jackie," Michael smiles, taking the leather jacket he had received out of the paper.

He drapes it over the sofa arm. Next, Randy.

"What did Randy get me, huh?" Michael asks rhetorically, shaking the box. He opens it.

"Men's watch. Cheers bro," Michael smiles, closing the box again to keep the watch safe.

Finally, Jermaine's present. Michael is given the present, it's small, very small, and flimsy looking. Michael opens it gently.

"Uh.. it's a.. "Things I Owe You" voucher pad," Michael says.

Jermaine comes forward and takes the book. He flicks through the pages.

"Yeah, I made it myself! It has a load of stuff I can owe you in it, like, one car washing, one week of me making your dinner, seven jobs around the house that you don't wanna do, y'know?" Jermaine explains.

Michael smiles.

"Cheers."

My turn. I hand him the box. The first one is a joke present.

He takes it and opens it slowly. He laughs when he sees what's inside.

"Another guide. How bad am I in this world?" he chuckles.

He looks at the title.

"How To Speak With A Convincing Accent," he reads. I chuckle.

"Happy birthday!" I giggle.

"Teaches Polish, English, French, American, Spanish and German accents," he reads the little info tab at the bottom. I give him his second present.

"What's this?" he asks, opening the box.

He smiles unsurely at what he sees inside.

"A camera!" he smiles. "Thank you!"

"That's ok. Would you like to know why I got you that?" I ask. He nods.

"I thought it was just for taking pictures," he says. I shake my head.

"Nope, me and Katherine have been talking about this for a while, and.." I start, letting Katherine take over.

She brings out an envelope.

"One final present for you," she says.

Michael smiles and takes the envelope.

"Ooh. Another present!" he grins, unsealing the envelope.

His eyes widen at what he finds inside.

"Mother.. you.. really did this?" Michael asks, taking the present out of the envelope. I smile.

"Me and your mother planned this," I say. Michael kisses my lips.

"Thank you baby," he whispers. He looks at Katherine.

"Two tickets to Paris!" he smiles.

Katherine looks Michael in the eyes.

"Yes, now you see why we gave you the camera?" she asks. Michael nods.

"Yeah, I see, I see," he says.

"You and Becky have fun. It'll give you chance to take your minds off things. Now, take some nice pictures with that camera, ok?" Katherine smiles. Michael leaps up.

"Thank you, mother!" he grins, hugging her tightly.

He turns to me and kisses my lips gently.

"Should we tell them?" he asks. I nod.

Michael turns around to face everyone.

"Actually, me and Becky have something we'd like to say," Michael says.

Everyone focuses on him.

"Ok, you know me and Becky have been together for a long time. Well, we are both delighted to tell you guys that we are expecting our first child together," Michael says.

The family erupts into applause, and a sea of "Congratulations" and "Good luck for the future" sort things.

It's so nice knowing how much they care. Michael places his arm around me.

"So, you're enjoying your birthday so far, Michael?" I ask.

Michael nods with a huge smile on his face.

"This is the best birthday I have ever had, or that any human could ever have. I have a beautiful girlfriend, a trip to Paris with her, and I've got a little Prince on the way. My birthday is perfect."
