Chapter 4: Well That's Just Great
Madison's P.O.V.
I roll over, sunlight streaming in through my bedroom window. It seems nice at first until I open my eyes. I groan, then roll off the bed. I grunt as I hit the floor. Seriously? My grumpiness, however, is washed away instantly by the memory of last night. I grin like an idiot as I pull myself up and get ready for the day.
I jog down the stairs and into the kitchen. My mom is sitting at the bar, drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book that she has been obsessed with for the past month.
"Morning mom." I say perkily, kissing her cheek as I pass her. I instinctively go over to the cupboards to rummage around for some breakfast.
"Morning sweetie," she looks up from her book, "where were you last night?"
Shit.
"Um at a friend's house." I reply casually as I pull out a box of cereal and a bowl.
"Which friend exactly?" She asks nonchalantly. I turn to look at her but she's reading her book again.
"Um Shawn's?" I say, more as a question.
Why is she so inquisitive this morning?
"Who's Shawn honey?" She asks, looking up at me with pure innocence.
She knows something she's not telling me...
"Just a friend." I say bluntly. She doesn't need to know that he's my crush and that we really hit it off last night. I grab the milk and pour it into my bowl of cereal.
"Okay hon," my mom turns back to her book, "just be safe."
A small smile tugs at her lips.
"Mom!!" I look at her surprised.
"I'm just kidding!" She smiles widely, her eyes twinkling, "but please be careful."
"Okay."
After breakfast, I take a walk downtown. There's something that I really like about my city's Main Street. It's busy but not busy enough that you're running into people and traffic usually isn't too bad. I also love the vintage shops you can find, that hold all kinds of neat antiques. And you definitely cannot forget the quaint coffee shops either. I stop by my favorite one and sit down for a break.
"Hey girl!" Angela, my favorite waitress and best friend, comes up to me with her pen and paper in hand.
"Hey!" I stand up and give her a hug, "how's work?"
"So stinking busy! I'm drowning," She shakes her head, "but it's okay. When I'm busy I can't get in trouble right?"
We laugh together.
"Yeah! True that. When you're done with work you need to call me cause I've got something to tell you!" I squeal.
I don't want to interrupt her now, so the whole Shawn thing can wait.
"Ugh I can't wait!" Angela fangirls, then quickly composes herself, "now what would you like?"
Shawn's P.O.V.
I slowly open my eyes. I roll over and sigh as I read the time on my bedside clock; six thirty. Hmm....do I want to get up? No, but I should. I need to go for a run. I get up and get dressed, slipping on some gym shorts, a loose gray t-shirt, socks and some running shoes. When I reach for my phone to slip it into my pocket I stop. Madison. I remember laying awake last night thinking about her. No, no I have to stop thinking about her so much. She doesn't think of me that way so I should just drop it. I sigh heavily. I leave my room and head downstairs to the kitchen. My dad is there, flipping pancakes on the griddle. He always makes breakfast on Saturday mornings.
"Morning dad." I come up behind him and lay a hand on his shoulder.
"Morning Shawn! How are you?" My dad turns and gives me a one-armed hug, since his other hand holds a spatula.
"Good. I'm gonna go for a run so I'll be back later." I smile at him.
"No breakfast?"
"Nah I'm good. I'll eat when I get back or
something."
"Okay, see you later."
I bid my goodbyes and step out into the fresh morning. I choose to go down main street and end up at a downtown coffee shop. Nothing like a brisk jog and cup of coffee to jumpstart a cool Saturday morning.
Madison's P.O.V.
I look out the window at quaint Floradale Toronto, which is quite busy, especially since its the weekend. People bustle about with their friends and family, whisking along little ones so they'll stay out of the street. I turn around to watch the bustle of the cafe. People ordering and then their name getting called. Just then, a guy steps in. He has brown hair, brown eyes, is tall and is wearing a grey t-shirt. A hoodie is wrapped around his lean torso and he wears athletic shorts. He has sweat on his forehead and his hair is rumpled like he just rolled out of bed.
What. Is. Happening. To. Me.
Shawn is standing in the doorway of the cafe. And guess what? He waved at me. And then he walks over to my table. MY. FRICKING. TABLE.
"Hey Madison," he shoots me his award-winning smile, "mind if I join you?
I am freaking out inside, "Don't mess this up, don't mess this up, don't mess this up!!!
This is too good to be true.
"Sure!" I say, then curse at myself for acting so desperate, "how are you?" I ask genuinely.
Shawn slides into the other side of the booth. He doesn't notice, but his toe brushed mine ever so slightly.
"Cool it," I tell myself, "just breathe."
"Good, just finished my morning run," Shawn smiles warmly, "how are you?"
"Good! Just hanging out here after my walk. Honestly, I was kinda lonely till you showed up." I try to hide my blush.
"Well, I'm glad I got here so I can keep you company." He laughs, making his eyes twinkle.
"So..besides running and music what do you like to do?" I ask.
Wow. Really? Madison you really need to work on your conversation starters. I internally groan at my desperate attempt.
But Shawn doesn't seem to notice.
"Well I like to eat muffins," he says it with such a serious tone I think he's serious.
"Omg, I like to eat muffins too!!!" I play along.
"Oh my gosh! Whats your favorite kind?" He says, a huge smile on his face.
"How can you choose? I ask, amazed that he can choose. They're all so good."
"Well, I love chocolate muffins best, but blueberry and any other kind are good too." He says thoughtfully.
"Omg chocolate and blueberry are my favorite too!!!"
"Seriously?!"
"Yeah! No joke."
I laugh along with him. He is so adorable. And yes, muffins are just wonderful.
"Hey Madison, need anything else? Oh hi! What's your name?" Angela comes up just then. She slyly winks at me with that ooh-he's-kinda-cute-face and then smiles at Shawn like nothing had ever happened.
"Oh uh hi," Shawn's face reddens a touch, "I'm Shawn. And you are?"
"Angela," she says, wrapping an arm around me, "but Shawn, I have to warn you," she clasps her hands over my ears before whispering, "she's a really hot mess."
"Hey!" I shove her hands away, a red-hot blush and utter embarrassment is written all over my face.
"You know you love me!" Angela laughs as she waves goodbye to wait on other customers.
"I am so sorry." I shake my head, mentally facepalming. At that moment I wished the floor would swallow me whole.
"That's okay. I don't mind if you're a hot mess." Shawn chuckles, then winks.
He just...fricking winked at me. AGHHH!!!
"Thanks," I smile, my face even hotter than before, "um do you wanna go for a walk or something?"
"Sure. Wouldn't want Angela embarrassing you again." He grins.
I appreciate you looking out for me. I smile, my face probably still as red as a ripe tomato.
After paying my bill, Shawn and I step out into the cool fall air. Its chilly, and I'm stupid enough not to have brought a coat with me. I awkwardly stand there rubbing my arms to get warm.
"Hey, are you cold?" Shawn asks, concern flashing across his features, as he watches me shiver.
"Of course not why would you think I'd be c-cold?"
Dammit Madison why did you have to let your teeth chatter?!
"Because your teeth are chattering and you're rubbing your arms. Here have my sweatshirt." Shawn unwraps his hoodie from his waist and holds it out to me. I take it gratefully and slip it over my head, swimming in the huge soft grey fabric.
"Thanks so much." I smile up at him, relishing the warmth of the sweater.
"Anytime, He smiles sweetly then asks. where to?"
"Um, we could go to the mall or the park?" I say, more as a question. I don't want to choose something that he doesn't like.
"How about the park? It's so nice out today." Shawn grins and with that, he swoops up my hand in his and off we go.
