Chapter 56: Obvious Mistake

11 April, 1993

"C'mon, Miracle, we gotta find the eggs!" I chuckle.

It's Easter Sunday, and Michael has hidden 15 eggs around the house and in the garden, so me and Miracle can find them together. He's been so thoughtful lately – having Miracle has really made him responsible – more so than before.

Carrying Miracle in my arms, I walk around with her, knowing Michael is watching us as we try to find the eggs. He has a devious smile on his face, cos he knows that we have no idea where these eggs are.

"Betcha can't find them," he taunts.

"I beg to differ," I smirk, finding an egg right in that moment, and placing it in the basket that Michael provided us with.

"Yay, we found one, Miracle," I cheer with a slight baby voice.

I search the entire living room and kitchen, finding a total of five eggs. Ten to go – from the whole of upstairs, and the garden.

We all head upstairs, and the first room I check is the bedroom. I search under the duvet and find a single egg, then I move towards the closet, but find nothing there. Then, I go to the window and find one behind the curtain.

"So that's seven so far," I calculate.

"Almost half way there," Michael nods impressively. "Good job."

I laugh a little, and head to the bathroom. I instantly find an egg in the bath, but then I do a slow 360° spin, allowing Miracle to "search" for the eggs too.

"Can you see any, baby?" I ask her softly.

I can already see one, so I lift her hand, and point it in the same direction.

"Good girl!" I praise her jokily, before heading over to where the egg is.

"You guys," Michael laughs.

We hear the doorbell downstairs, and Michael heads towards the staircase.

"That'll be Jasper and Charlie. I'll go get it."

Me and Miracle decide to stop searching for a moment, so we can welcome Jasper and Charlie properly. They've been so excited for Easter, so I bet they'll make that obvious.

"Hey Michael!" I hear Jasper's hyper voice downstairs.

"Hey, the girls are upstairs," Michael replies, his voice cheerful.

Making the decision to go down to them, rather than them coming up to us, I take Miracle down the stairs. When Charlie and Jasper see us, they beam at us, and Jasper holds his arms out for a mini group hug.

"Hey babe. Happy Easter," he says.

"And you guys too," I reply.

He pulls away from the hug, and latches his eyes onto Miracle, "And there's the little Princess! Oh, Becky, when will she be wearing this dress you've been telling me about?"

"Well," I chuckle. "After the Easter egg hunt. We already started it; found half of them so far. Wanna join?"

"Sure!" Charlie grins.

We all head upstairs, and I guide them into the bathroom. Immediately, we all start searching for the eggs, and Charlie turns around with one, "Here!"

"Nice," I compliment.

Now there are six to go. If Michael divided the eggs equally, there will be five in total upstairs. We've found four so far, so there is one to go.

"Let's look in Miracle's room," I suggest.

We all agree, before starting for that room. Once we're there, the search continues, until Jasper finds the egg next to Miracle's favourite teddy – a cuddly octopus.

"Yeah!" I cheer. "Now, the garden."

We all head to the garden, Michael still watching us all with a sneaky eye. He's obviously thinking the hunt would have lasted longer than it has done so far. We're finding them real quick!

When we get to the garden, we start looking. All we really have in the garden is a bench, a shed, a small water fountain, and grass; not a lot else. So... this shouldn't be too hard.

My prediction is proven correct when I find an egg by the water fountain, and place it in the basket. Jasper finds one under the bench, and Charlie finds one on the roof of the shed.

Two to go.

"Where are the last two?" I ask.

"Hmm, I know where they are," Michael tells me with a teasing smile on his face.

"Well, give us a clue!" Jasper laughs.

"Uh... gosh. It's where I keep... Becky's medication," he states.

Jasper takes a moment to think, "Where's your medication cupboard? Becky, I didn't even realise you had medication!"

I'm confused, too, to be honest. My medication?

Suddenly, a thought comes to my head, and I widen my eyes and turn to Michael, "The medication, huh?"

"Yep. That's where the eggs are," he says, giggling like a little school girl.

Finally understanding what he means, I clear my throat and turn to Jasper and Charlie, "Guys, I just need to talk to Michael about something. Be right back!"

I drag Michael inside the house, where the other two can't see, and I fight the urge to laugh in Michael's face.

"Please say you didn't put Miracle's eggs in your pants," I plead jokily.

He lets out a loud laugh, and shakes his head. "No, sweetheart! I said it to get a reaction, and it worked. They're in the garden somewhere, don't worry."

I heave a sigh of relief, and look up at Michael. "Man, God made such a sexy human being."

He takes me into his arms, looking down at me, "I know. She's called Becky Summers."

I scoff, swatting the air in front of him.

"Whatever you say, Michael."

"Ah, atta girl. That phrase never ceases to make me happy. It suits you so great."

I laugh a little, "C'mon; Jasp and Charlie are waiting for us."

I take his hand, and we walk out into the garden again, where Jasper is holding Miracle, with Charlie standing by them.

Charlie looks up and sees us, "There they are!"

"Turns out Michael was lying about the eggs being in the medication... uh, cupboard," I hesitate a little. "But he said they're definitely in the garden someplace."

"Okay!" Jasper replies, handing Miracle back over to me.

We continue to search for the remaining two eggs, until we finally find one inside the shed, and the other buried amongst some tall, overgrown grass.

"We did it!" I cheer to Miracle.

I hand her an egg to play with, and she stays in my arms, engrossed in her examination of the mysterious object she has been given to play with. She's normally a very sleepy person, but it looks like she takes interest in Easter eggs.

"Should we go inside?" I ask.

Jasper nods, "Yeah; it's cold out here!"

We all head inside, and exchange Easter eggs. The boys also decided to get Miracle a small pair of bunny ears to wear with her dress, which I'm soon to dress her up in.

After exchanging eggs, I take Miracle upstairs so I can change her into her little Easter dress and bunny ears. I just know she's going to look adorable in them.

I lie her on the bed, and take the dress out. She's still got her sight fixated on the egg; she seems to be obsessed with it. It's adorable how such a simple thing can entertain a child for so long.

Having changed her into her dress now, I place the bunny ears lightly on her head, and admire her beautiful self. She looks absolutely adorable all-in-all.

"Is Miracle a gorgeous little girl?" I ask rhetorically.

She then places the egg in her mouth, and such with its small size — before I can realise – she starts coughing and spluttering uncontrollably.

Now I'm in panic mode.

"Michael!" I scream. "Miracle's choking!"

"Oh my God!" I hear Michael cry from downstairs.

I try to dislodge the egg from her throat by hitting her back gently, and lightly pushing just above her chest – but she doesn't show any signs of stopping her choking.

Michael arrives moments later, taking Miracle from my arms and trying to dislodge the egg himself. I stand crying nervously, and Michael looks to be close to having a breakdown – but he's also fighting himself not to, so he can save our daughter.

"Come on, sweetie! It's okay!" he assures her, as if she can hear him.

After much attempting, Miracle coughs, and the egg finally comes up. Michael heaves the largest sigh of relief you ever heard, and simply cradles her against his chest tightly.

"You're okay now, honey. Daddy's got you."

He then turns to me, an angered expression on his face, "You should've been watching her, Becky. She nearly died because of that!"

"Wha—You're blaming me for that?" I demand. "That wasn't my fault!"

"Well, I didn't see Jasper or Charlie give her that egg, did you?" he retorts.

"How was I meant to know she would try swallowing it? She was just looking at it up until then!"

"Well, it's pretty obvious that small items should be kept outta reach of children, isn't it?" he hisses. "It says it on every box of every product in existence! "Keep outta reach of small children", remember?" he argues.

Tears threaten my eyes, "I'm sorry, Michael. I didn't know she was gonna choke on it!"

"I'm just glad – for your sake – that she's okay," he replies sternly.

Jasper and Charlie enter the room, looking somewhat flustered.

"Is she okay?" Jasper asks desperately.

"Yes, she's fine," Michael smiles at him, but frowns over at me. "No thanks to Miss Summers, there."

He only normally calls me that nickname when he's trying to catch my attention in a seductive way. I don't like the angry way he says it.

"I tried to dislodge it, Michael!" I frown. "And it's over now anyway. No need to be so touchy."

"Now guys, please don't fight!" Charlie begs. "I hate seeing you guys fight!"

"No fighting involved, Charlie. Just me pointing out the obvious mistakes," Michael emphasises the latter two words of his sentence and aims them at me.

I look down sadly, wondering how any of this is my fault. I know I gave her the egg, but how was I meant to know she would want to swallow it?

I walk Michael's way, and try to take Miracle from his arms, but he resists, keeping her close to his chest.

Is he really being serious right now? Not even letting me touch my own daughter?

"Michael, I wanna hold her!" I cry.

"Well, put it this way: at least I won't choke her," he says, sounding more calm than before, but still with a hint of anger in his voice. "Let her stay with me for a moment or two."

I nod my head, and I feel Jasper's arms embracing me from behind. He whispers in my ear, "Don't worry babe. He's just caring for her like a good father should."

I go to reply, but then I hear Michael speaking softly, into Miracle's ear.

"I thought I was gonna lose you, honey. Don't ever do that to daddy again. Daddy loves you more than life itself..."

As he speaks these words, a tear rolls down his cheek, which only indicates how much she just scared him by choking. He really must care for her, if he's reacting this way.

Jasper and Charlie decide to leave us alone for a moment, and I approach Michael.

"Michael, please don't blame me for that. I was just as scared as you were."

"I don't doubt that for a second."

"I didn't know she would try eating it," I say defensively.

"Hmm."

I stroke Miracle's tiny, fuzzy head of hair, "I'm sorry baby. Please never scare mommy and daddy that way again."

Michael sighs, catching my attention, and I look up at him.

"I can't stay mad at you," he confesses.

I try to force a smile, but the way he shouted at me a few moments back lingers in my head still.

"I'm sorry for blaming you," he apologises. "I was just scared out of my mind. I didn't want to lose my only child."

I nod my head slowly, averting my eyes to the floor to avoid eye contact with him. However, he rests his three middle fingers under my chin, and guides my head up gently.

"Hey, baby? I'm sorry."

I nod again, "Okay."

"And I love you. Okay?"

"Love you too, Michael."

He shifts his weight from one foot to another, "I feel like you're mad at me."

"No," is all I say.

"Prove it."

I look up at him, and stand on my tip toes to peck his lips quickly. When I pull away, he still looks unconvinced.

"That was the least genuine kiss you've ever given me," he frowns, knitting his eyebrows together.

"Sorry," I apologise slightly sarcastically.

"Don't stay mad at me... please? Please, babe?"

I avert my eyes back up to him, and a small, genuine smile forms on my face.

"Okay, okay. I'm not mad."

He gives a small, casual grin, and bends down to kiss me. I enter his embrace, and he rubs his hand against my arm comfortingly.

"I'm sorry I gave Miracle the egg," I apologise.

"Don't worry. I'm just glad she's okay now."

He kisses Miracle's forehead, before handing her over to me at last. He still keeps his arms around me, though, and I feel like my life is complete.

I love my little family.

I tried to make the argument realistic. x( Sorry if I failed; I'm not a parent so... I can't do that. xD Again, I remind you of my new story "Forever And A Half". Hope you liked this chapter! :)
